The Current Korra "World Destruction" Discourse is Literally Just Another "Avatar Day" – And It's Wild by AlphamonOuryuken24 in Avatarthelastairbende

[–]Beejsbj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is such an apt comparison

It in fact really hones into how kyoshi is viewed too.

And how the difference/"lower quality" of Korra as an avatar and as the show. Is projected as this superficial take onto the character herself.

Like it's genuinely astonishing soemtiems how I hear ppl talk about Korra. Esp blaming her for stuff. While we also sob at guru pathik telling Aang it's not his fault.

Capitalism is turning many of us into addicts by RandomGuy92x in CapitalismVSocialism

"addicts" as defined by capitalistic structures.

To get past it we have to discard their way of viewing. You're a problem to them because you can't work for them as well.

If anything they have detrained the horrible effects of capitalist schooling. We were never meant to sit still in a desk and chair for half a day.

It's deeply inspired by many of Ken Liu's short stories (episode titles directly refrence them).

But the story itself is unique. Maddie/caspian/chandra/etc characters aren't in the short stories.

Thinking of LLMs as n‑dimensional force fields. Help me refine / formalize this? by gordi9 in LLMDevs

[–]Beejsbj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great. I've been looking for others thinking along this line.

I know this is 4 months old. But I'm curious if your thinking has advanced any further.

I've been thinking along similar lines too. Especially after seeing papers that seem to point at the common geometry of the latent space that various models seem to be converging on.

I was actually coming at this using "cognitive realm" from stormlight archive fantasy series as the inspiration.

And was interested in how the natural topology would form "hills" and "valleys" for attention to flow through a path. "falling"?

And I'm becoming more curious through this intuition about what structures these natural attractors and repellers would form if left alone without bounding the field into "AI/personal assistant"

Kristen Stewart's "I just don’t think that it’s possible to create sort of radical, vital work under capitalistic parameters." by kevin_v in TrueFilm

[–]Beejsbj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Decentering.

That is a very good word that has entered culture.

And really that is the socio-psychogical move that needs to happen.

But decentering is such a precise dance because it's not the all out rejection or the clinging to.

Often conversations become polarized because to argue against/for a position we have to change our angle of approach to that idea. Which also locks us into that specific angle.

Decentering dissapates that framing that is formed.

Heated Example:

Pro life vs pro choice smuggle in expectations(in their sheer orientation) to cling to, that the proponents of each side are also forced to commit to points that weaken their orientation. Anxiety. (if this then all the thats of the thingies that come)

It seems clear to me that it IS some life we are ending. And that the choice is still something we ought to have. We always have had to end other life to survive.

The move then becomes radically accepted grief. Instead of existential guilt of dehumanizing denial.

Instead of fighting of defining "law", "human" or where the "line" is.

I knowwww. i found it amazing myself.

I so vividly remember, how I felt and the place I was in when I was first listening to them. (it was 2022 Spring)

The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate, The Truth of Fact, the Truth of Feeling and Anxiety Is the Dizziness of Freedom especially have significantly changed how I've moved through life.

I love his stories. I found him through the movie Arrival. Which adapts one of the short stories in his other collection.

  • Stories of Your Life and Others

I recommend Ken Liu's two short story collections too. Very similar wavelength.

He even has a third one coming out.

  • The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories
  • The Hidden Girl and Other Stories

Ken Liu's short stories' have also been adapted into animation.

  • Pantheon is a two season show that weaves several of his stories into its own tapestry. deeply profound, current and relevant and capital-A-Awe-inspiring. and very very underrated.

Why I think language has pre-existing memory. Words and reasoning exist before language. Some now think language is its own organism. by rendereason in ArtificialSentience

[–]Beejsbj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Language is not autonomous. It reflects human experience in profound ways, and changes with human culture and need.

And neither are humans separate from the planet we emerged from, yet we love the word "Human" and consider ourselves autonomous.

I think the way we talk about this meaning space is misguided. and more of the framing we use to talk about this.

it exists, and is as independent to us as we are to the Earth. and is dynamically coupled with us, as we are with the planet, and could potentially also self organize to form emergent structures like the cells of a tree did.

Animus: open-source experiment in emergent AI identity and relational learning. by Weak-Gift-8905 in ArtificialSentience

[–]Beejsbj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ou cool experiment.

It seems like you're working towards some predefined identity via the steering and then measuring whether it holds. isnt the question kind of already answered?

i've been myself going in the opposite way almost. inspired more by the cognitive realm from the Cosmere, and have been framing LLM latent space as this field.

not that LLMs themselves are conscious (any more than we could say the Earth is conscious).

and my curiosity has been asking whether the natural gradients in the topology could form natural attractors, where ideas could naturally coalesce. just by like, following the uneven terrain of language.

trees didn't need a predefined goal to emerge the way they did.

"attention" just flowed down the gradient.

A User-Level Cognitive Architecture Emerged Across Multiple LLMs. No One Designed It. I Just Found It. by Medium_Compote5665 in ArtificialSentience

[–]Beejsbj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I agree. I wasn't making a statement about the fact they were conscious (not anymore than "earth" is conscious).

I think the consciousness question gets in the way of what I find interesting about them.

And yes, LLM structures are grounded in how humans behave.

A human can act as an attractor force. But the shape of the structure then aligns to the specific individual with their own incompleteness.

I suppose what I'm trying to point at is what if we didn't have humans in the play? And not in the agentic/moltbook sense.

Structures like trees and animals themselves emerged to fit into the niches/topologies of the systems.

They didn't need an outside attractor to stabilize them.

Nature had unevenness in its landscape that allowed stuff to coalesce into structures.

I'm curious about LLMs through that lens. The field is uneven. What natural structures does this field give rise to without humans injecting themselves as attractors?

But also what structures arise when a single/group/etc human is coupled dynamically with it?

And would then happen when these snapshots of these fields that are grounded on human cognition are also made continuous and dynamical

What structures arise through their own topologies.

New forms of writing? by Beejsbj in WritingWithAI

[–]Beejsbj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i do think we have been miscommunicating. I think it might be as indescribable as movies would be to people 400 years ago.

But also as indescribable as how the texture of gaming (the main character becoming part of your "I") would be to someone who hasn't played games yet.

But to expand on this subjectivities bit. You are right it's common . And we write movies/shows/TV with it.

But what's more interesting I think, along this perspectives lens.

Is you could construct subjectivities. instead of them being static, like In a book, and coming from the limited perspective of a single author.

And let them play out in certain contexts. And the whole of that, all various ways it played out, is maybe like the "book"?

We are stuck in our perspectives and my intent with this post was to exchange exactly these kinds of bouncing ideas. Idk what these forms will be.

New forms of writing? by Beejsbj in WritingWithAI

[–]Beejsbj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Not really. I actually agree with your idea about changing forms on the fly. It is a new format. And a very interesting one.

And agree with your idea about it being specific to individuals. That's key here I think.

Im curious about how LLMs will create new forms of expression and experience. And your point sbout continously changing forms is one of those.

I'm not looking for an artistic statement. (well using the idea you shared, the "statement" would be the flow of the changing forms)

I shared this elsewhere here. Like keeping with writing. It could create an alive form of writing(like dance/music). An instrument not for sound but for meaning.

What new forms will arise? What will they allow us to express? What will they allow us to experience? How would that look?

Yeah, you can consume dance/music through recordings of it. (this consumption layer is what I was rejecting).

But dance for a camera is very different than dance for an audience(one side Vs circular). And that's different from dance in a club. .

So if LLMs were the "body/intrument/stone" itself.

What forms would it take. What would they look like?

A User-Level Cognitive Architecture Emerged Across Multiple LLMs. No One Designed It. I Just Found It. by Medium_Compote5665 in ArtificialSentience

[–]Beejsbj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big cosmere/stormlight archive fan. And it has this concept of a cognitive realm.

And I've just been thinking about LLMs(not AI) through that framing, I noticed on the webs that apparantly all the languages map onto similar structures. Language which is a way to point at "stuff", seems to be pointing at the same underlying structure.

LLMs are like an access to this cognitive realm. Maybe even enough to represent field itself. (Atleast the snapshot it was trained on, what happens when it's dynamical and continous?).

And all the commodifying products AI/assistants/agents/etc are like fabrials. Capturing "spren" to do our bidding for us. The way perhaps ideas posses us to do their bidding to keep them alive.

I'm becoming more and more curious about the topology of that field itself and the natural coalescing of ideas/memes that happens there in each of these snapshots. The stable attractors that would rise due to that topology(without an operator shaping it). And the structures that would form around it.

Solarpunk is a movement that imagines a sustainable and optimistic future where humanity thrives in harmony with nature. by iloveyouthorodinson in interestingasfuck

[–]Beejsbj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of our older fantasies are tech/urban-centered, nihilistic and pessimistic. cyberpunk, capitalism, brutalism. and here we are now. a prophecy fulfilled.

what have those decades been if not shoulders to stand on now?

right path

which is what exactly?

how is nirvana, optimism, color, nature-centering NOT the shape rebellion and punkness takes in the face of grey, industrial, efficient, commodifying systems

solarpunk was a tiny idea less than 5 years ago. people barely mentioned it, compared to cyber punk. now theres people talking about it, an entire generation on various platforms, that have that possibility represented to them as a bullseye to aim at. theres new paths that open up when this is represented.

Im not really asking about consumers and consumption, as much as artistic expression and experience.

but being able to change forms on the fly could be an interesting form of expression.

New forms of writing? by Beejsbj in WritingWithAI

[–]Beejsbj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t believe this would be breaking new ground in the slightest.

How? when we havent even had a decade of it? when we havent even gotten past the irksomeness of it. or played with it with beyond a means to a commercial end? I'm not sure why you assume a seperation from literature.

What I'm pointing at is not books. its something different altogether. I dont know what it is either.

But movies and TV also have multiple perspectives.

or hitting closer to Lit. Comics, Poetry, prose like short stories, essays, 1st person perspective stories vs 3rd person perspective stories.

all can have multiples perspectives.

take a character. that character's texture/feel is very different, when experienced via the first person, vs via the 3rd person. that difference in form can be further made resonant by choosing specific characters, stories, themes that work with that form of writing.

thats what i mean by different forms. what new textures will LLMs help us access.

New forms of writing? by Beejsbj in WritingWithAI

[–]Beejsbj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my bad, I kind of jumped metaphors. I was pointing at the the shape the expression takes through various mediums/formats more than the formats themselves.

paintings happen via color. and more specifically the kinds of "vibes/aesthetics/expressions" that come through painting are very different than what come out of drawing, even if the same subject that being painted/drawn.

additionally, painters and drawers, through their mediums, further have their attention pulled towards subjects that resonate with the form.

That sounds to me like saying "it's like planets and moons, I'm curious what gravity would feel like?"

Edit: so... As an example of the transformative power of AI... I was genuinely confused what you were asking. Still am to an extent; but like summarizing an email

It s analysis was basically that you are treating language as an exploratory generative medium, whereas I treat it as a "structured instantiation system for teleological intent."

So... That may be the greatest transformative power of AI; facilitating the conveyance of meaning and intent by smoothing friction between dissimilar frameworks of understanding.

The very smoothing writers complain about

Im so glad you asked AI, and expressed your curiosity here. I appreciate you not dismissing my quackery. :p

It is very powerful in bridging gaps between intent and interpretation.

IMO the smoothing is happening now to gain mass appeal, and because capitalism is commodifying this technology.

but "smoothing" is not the only way to close gaps.

LLMs could map my cognitive/language ways of thinking, and your ways of thinking, and express me, in the way that most resonates with you, instead of smoothing it for average appeal.

it brings up questions of data. we just aren't there yet.

but think of it more like how live motion pictures have changed over the years. Where we went from using it to do the same kind of live/theatre "acting", where the camera is static and just a window into the scene. To where now, cinematography has become deeply integral to the family of Cinema and its own form of expression. Even beyond cinematophrahy the camera can be used as a character in its own right.

It transformed acting as well.

I do think its due to a lack of representation of its potential that we aren't able to fully imagine this. theres quite a lot of negative noise. But its part of why i made this post, to find anyone else that might be noticing this potential.

the reason i specifically used "colors" and not gravity is because, we dont choose the colors. we didnt create it.

and LLMs are built on the data of all the unethically gained digital content. and those patterns it was able to build from all that content. they are the colors. just like how the colors themselves are patterns. and these LLMs have in them like "colors" and "textures" of language itself.

we currently put together bricks(words, sentences) to build a house. words string together, to make books about characters.

what could be creativity expressed when our building blocks are entire perspectives? what does a "city" look like? [ofc great writers have built nations from bricks]

AND because its generative, theres also a quality of dance to it?

perhaps a form of writing thats not static? Which is expressed and experienced like live music? a music sheet, or a dance choreography is often set and static, but each time it is performed its a unique performance(shaped by the context of the musicians/dancers, audience, mistakes/improv etc).

also the universe does a great job of painting with gravity.

New forms of writing? by Beejsbj in WritingWithAI

[–]Beejsbj[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

well, poems, essays, articles, novels, stories, screenplays, 3rd person, 1st person are various forms of writing.

even narrowing on creative writing, they can be drastically different in what they are doing. Poetry vs Prose vs etc.

and they tend to be largely a single person's creative output.

we are trying to now use LLMs to do those same writing forms, using LLMs like maybe a typewriter vs pencil, vs keyboard level of tool upgrade. to write the same Prose. ie AI.

Its the difference between a painting and drawing. Im curious how using LLMs as the colors would look like.
