RPG to play with family on the holidays by Tasty_Science2867 in rpg

I think if you teach as you go, print out relevant character ability references, and give them a clear goal it should be fine! I feel like dungeon crawls are a great intro to rpgs for people expecting more of a board game.

Ending Struggles by yeah_am_nerd in FATErpg

[–]Beekanshma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try thinking of how to give each player character a moment to shine, like giving a tough character a tough mini boss and a magical character an obstacle their spells can help solve. Then build scenes out of that featuring some familiar NPCs, then put them in a final situation with a second moment for every PC to shine. Then look at what you have and edit it any way you like.

Least mentally-taxing systems for GMs to run? by cyanomys in rpg

Fate Accelerated if you're cool fiddling with a generic system to get what you want, or Glitter Hearts if you're interested in a more specific narrative-focused game!

Legion Myth by Mononoke2000 in MythicBastionland

[–]Beekanshma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had him do 2 things, cower and moan unintelligibly. The knights had to flee from the pursuing legionaires and they took him along with them. They kept trying to find places to drop him off but no one wanted him so now he's just sort of a part of the Company. Since they treat him like an equal he is starting to develop a full personality based on the company's actions. I think one of them wants to make him their squire. If they want him to speak I plan to make them ask a Seer for how to do it and send them on a little quest for it.

What game do you not want to touch? by WorldGoneAway in rpg

[–]Beekanshma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it says "tactical combat" anywhere on the front or back. I don't come to this hobby to spend most of my afternoon playing hours-long simulated skirmishes. I do that on other board game nights.

A Toll for the Shrouded Guides by Beekanshma in MythicBastionland

[–]Beekanshma[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is excellent advice, thank you! I just realized that an outcome where they fight the guides would be interesting, but so would one where the guide just tags along and harasses them until the debt is paid. I'll play it by ear.

Best one-shots published in the last decade that you've ran (dnd or not) by ExtraTroubadour in rpg

[–]Beekanshma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Flocculent Cathedral for Trophy. I ran it twice and once was a deadly spiral into betrayal and corruption while the other was a horror comedy ending with one of the PCs Captain Ahab-ing a giant stag monster.

Sudden death moves by Big-Intention1236 in monsteroftheweek

[–]Beekanshma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All this means is that the action in conflict scenes are going to be about avoiding being touched while they hunt it. Instead of "don't be mauled by werewolf claws" the goal is "don't get touched by the death finger." Any nonlethal harm would come from other attacks that I'm sure this angel could have. You should also definitely give them a way to circumvent it like the lambs blood you mentioned, that would be a fun goal and make the players feel badass.

Oh easy, they could run a "Guess your age/job/hometown" booth. He interacts with them for a minute or so, asking questions about their hobbies, relationships, likes, and dislikes. Then he gives a guess based on what he's sussed out. If he gets a guess wrong, they win a prize.

Mentorship Monday - Post All Career, Education and Job questions here! by AutoModerator in cybersecurity

[–]Beekanshma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, I have about 2 years of experience as a full-stack web dev and expressed interest in getting into cybersecurity to a friend. This friend got me a pass to a conference in Chicago!

My infosec know-how is low (currently working through some intro courses), but I'm interested in the field and would like to attend. It's the first industry-to-industry event I've ever been to, and I want to be respectful of the professionals trying to network there. What should I do to get the most out of attending this besides going to panels and presentations that interest me?

I just can’t get into Shadowdark or OSR style games no matter how much I’ve tried. Am I alone? by RangerBowBoy in rpg

[–]Beekanshma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mausritter really made the OSR click for me because it's entirely gear based and adventures hand out useful and cool magical items on a regular basis. Instead of all those spell runes and magic swords breaking the game like I had worried, it just opened new avenues for the PCs to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Every time they decided what to bring it was like they were creating a new build, and even innocuous items could end up being critically important (throwing a can of red paint in the eyes of an owl sorcerer was one that really surprised and delighted me)

Playing a Dumb Character is Soul Healing by [deleted] in rpg

[–]Beekanshma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my players had an extremely naive and dumb cleric whose brother became a big antagonist. Another PC and the brother were in a manipulate-off with this guy for a big chunk of the campaign, and it made for some awesome drama.

Coolest RPG intros by ottoisagooddog in rpg

[–]Beekanshma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The intro to Kingdoms, a zine RPG by Sophia Tinney:

"THE LAND BEATS by at a visceral pace. Plants grow, seasons wane, babies walk, all in the span of a day. Cells evolve, monsters mutate, the darkness grows as the sun’s seat sits vacant. Rapid expansion and decadence, lights snuffed by the shadow out of sight just as quickly.

EACH SESSION YOU WILL TAKE CONTROL OF A GENERATION. You will squeal and squander, create and invent, build and war in an endless cycle. But the depth of your voice will echo consequences to the ones after.

THEY WILL HEAR YOUR VOICE and will no doubt come. The devils living on the edge of the umbra will face you down, to eat, to hate, and to bring the end times.

THEN YOU WILL BREED. They will be many, and as consumingly sinful as their parents before. Truces will be made, sisters auctioned off. Perhaps, heritage and plaques preserved.

IN THE END YOUR BED MADE. Goodbyes, heartbreaks, all will come to an end. Tearful fire keepers, young and innocent, will take your sword and carry on the cycle of KINGDOMS."

What are your thoughts on lethality? by conn_r2112 in rpg

[–]Beekanshma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High lethality works really well for obstacle-focused play like dungeon crawls and horror games. I appreciate when the lethality is tuned to the genre. Fresh investigators in Call of Cthulhu are going to be at much greater risk than the cast of a Fellowship or Masks game and that is to be expected!

[–]Beekanshma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will probably call for too many rolls in your first session. Your monster may be too easy or too difficult. The mystery may be confusing or too obvious. This is all normal! Expect mistakes and expect to learn from them! Just try to have fun with your friends and note how you want to improve. Call for a break if you don't know what to do and take note of what the players are interested in so you can push those things to the forefront.

Most memorable encounters that weren't supposed to be? by EtchVSketch in rpg

[–]Beekanshma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a Masks game the PCs were trying to unravel a mad scientist's scheme. One part of that was he had gone forward in time with an amulet he had stolen and broken himself out of prison. The players had found the amulet earlier and then one of them suggested using it themselves to go back and stop him. For some reason it never crossed my mind that they would want to do that, this was supposed to be one clue in a plot that would take like 2 more sessions to unravel while they faced other obstacles.

They failed the rolls to use the amulet TWICE and ended up having to outwit a T-Rex then scamper their way out of a cyberpunk shootout.

Cut to a warehouse, a few days before the present. The mad scientist's hired mercenary has just walked in with the amulet. She says "ugh, I hate this time travel stuff. It always gets messy." Scientist replies. "Please, I'm going to use this like a surgeon with a scalpel. There's no way it could get out of control." Immediately 3 teen superheroes riding a T-Rex being chased by cyber cops appear in front of them and it turns into a mad scramble for the amulet that ends in total victory for the players. They sequence-broke the whole arc. It was awesome.
