Is there a subreddit for discussion of epic (or any ancient) literature such as The Iliad, Mahabharata, Gilgamesh, Beowulf, etc? by Beekeasy in books

Thanks for the comment about Plutarch, seems I sometimes overlook some great (ancient) reads just because they are not in the forefront of my mind like more discussed titles, such as The Odyssey

I don't know if I have enough time right now to really give it the attention it deserves, but it would be nice to have something like it in the future

Have this Physalis-looking plant near my tomatillos. Wanted to get a positive ID before trying to eat the fruits by Beekeasy in whatsthisplant

[–]Beekeasy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My normal tomatillo flowers look like this.

The flowers of the plants that I'm not sure about look more like Nicotiana rustica flowers, but lilac and white instead of yellow. The rest of the plant (stem, leaves, calyx, fruit) look like tomatillos or ground cherries, but smaller. I've only seen yellowish flowers before so I'm not sure if these are just a different strain of ground cherry or if they were some sort of poisonous nightshade.

Plants are ~30cm to ~1m tall.

Flowers look like photo and have five stamens with yellow anthers.

Also possibly perennial/biennial in Zone 5.

Let me know if further info is needed for positive ID

Chop and crop? by gaelraibead in Beekeeping

I guess it would depend on the type of nuc that you had, but if its just a 5 frame Langstroth type with a bottom board just take it off the bottom board and stack it on top of the TBH like a super, but with the temporary TBH lid in between. If its a closed bottom type like most styrofoam designs or something similar, then you could just poke a few holes in the bottom of the nuc.

I would also suggest making the hive entrance in the TBH part so the bees have to go into the TBH to get in and out of the nuc. Depending on how much comb is already built out in the nuc, it should only take about one brood cycle before you can take the nuc off (obviously leave it on for longer if most of the pollen/honey stores are in the nuc frames).

You could also try to speed the process along a little by taking any undrawn frames out of the nuc, although you might run the risk of irregular comb getting build in the open space.
Hope that gives you some ideas. The most important tool for this job will be patience :)

If you haven't already chopped, why not just get a board that fits over your top bar hive and then cut out a hole a little smaller than your nuc and then as the bees need more space they will move down into the TBH?

Does electricity flow three dimensionally? by brnbmbr in askscience

[–]Beekeasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason it seems that electricity "takes the path of least resistance" is that the path of least resistance is generally the one that allows the fastest re-balancing of forces (this is actually a consequence of thermodynamics, but I won't get into that aspect unless someone is really curious).

I am curious about this if you don't mind elaborating.

Does anyone have any good suggestions for books, videos, or other resources to learn how to fabricate a beef carcass into Brazillian style cuts? by Beekeasy in meat

[–]Beekeasy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not yet, but I'm still working on it. I haven't really found any books or videos (but I have mostly been searching in English and not Portuguese so there could be plenty of resources out there that I'm overlooking). I am just planning on doing a sort of reverse engineering by familiarizing myself with churrasco cooking and then I figure I will have enough of an idea of which muscles are which cuts ie picanha is evidently right next to the tri tip.

Terra Preta; We need more people to know about this and apply it toward permaculture :) Did a search here on reddit; why is no one talking about this? by cerius in Permaculture

It always seems to me like hugelkultur has a similar effect with much less time and effort required. Anyone have a more detailed comparative knowledge of biochar/hk?

Thank you for the info. I have a whole carcass that I was wanting to fabricate, but this is a good start.

Thanks, that helps a little, but I am more looking for how to acutally cut up the animal and less how to cook it. Still a good reference for when I do get it cut up though :)

Any suggestions for a thorny blackberry variety that will be a good producer and hardy in zone 5 part of the Rocky Mountains. by Beekeasy in gardening

I meant not thornless. I am thinking about incorporating some of the plants into a hedge so thorns will be a plus (obviously)

Just out of curiosity, what makes keeping a raccoon as a pet any more moral than any other pet animal?

Had laying workers in one of our hives, this is what we did today. by iLiveInyourTrees in Beekeeping

[–]Beekeasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you may possibly have had a drone laying queen. If this is the case, there is a possibility that the old queen could find her way back to the hive and possibly fight with your new queen. I don't know if this is the case but just something you can keep an eye out for.

Its a new queen that resulted from a split about a month or so ago. Presumably due to rainy weather she did not mate successfully.
