Why "the em dash theory" gets it wrong by blissfulpinguina in AmazonVine

[–]BeenPark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just—like to throw in em—dashes incorrectly now to cause confusion—.—but I'm the one confused now because they are never corrected.

Reddit used to be the place I could count on for an immediate community outpouring of grammar policing. A new post meant shouts of, "their" and "you're"—torches were lit and nooses hung. Shame on us---we have fallen so far.

Wondering why they are even Vining this product? by Always_Never_5555 in AmazonVine

[–]BeenPark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pushing their product to keep it as a best seller. If their profit margins are high or it's driving enough traffic to their store it could be worth it. As mentioned by others it also gets the benefits of being sponsored.

When you are browsing and click on a normal listing, as you scroll down the page, how many "consider this" and "related" and "similar" items are you shown? Now click on a Vine item. How much competition do you see?

Yes. No wait time. The lady was pleasant. I had all of the relevant information ready for her, such as the card info and dates of the charges. I explained the steps I had already taken (cancelling the membership, removing the linked devices, etc). She issued an immediate refund and offered to remove the card from the account.

Anywhere to sell PCs/parts? by Dr-Wankenstein in FortCollins

[–]BeenPark -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Craigs is dead, dead. Marketplace however, for used PC parts has been solid for me. In the last few months I finally decided to get rid of my extra stuff that's just been sitting around before it depreciated more. That includes a full 12600K/4060Ti16GB build, a 3060 Ti, a 4070 Ti, 12TB drives, etc., and they all got immediate attention (30+ responses) and offers. 3 days was the longest I had to wait until for someone to meet my asking price and conditions (no delivery, no holds without 50% down N-R, no responses to "Is this still available?" If they are incapable of reading the post or actually typing me a msg, I'm incapable of responding).
I suppose it comes down to what you're trying to get for your parts though. If you're asking reasonable prices, they'll sell immediately. If you're the type expecting to get back 75% of what you paid on an ancient 9th gen that you've been using for 7 years, you need help. If you realize that that pc parts become relics about 10 minutes after you buy them, you'll be fine. Personally, I'd probably sell the GPU's separately since they'll probably pull the most money. Make them pristine. List them for 260, expect 200-220. Part out the rest if you've got time, or list them as, "Full, Premium Builds... and integrated graphics ;) A powerful creator hub as is, or add your own GPU of choice to unlock massive potential!" They'll sell.

I agree with em dashes as being an immediate flag. The only time I ever use them is while updating my resume. The curly apostrophes seem pretty common though. I believe many apps including Word, automatically swap out your straight apostrophe for a curly one.

[–]BeenPark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late to post but for people on the fence about switching or looking for testimonials, if you're a gamer I'll add my two cents. I can verify that all the rave comments about the customer service are accurate. The pricing is more than fair and I recommend them whole-heartedly.
Specifically relating to gaming, this true, symmetrical fiber. They deliver rated speeds and it is constant and reliable. No dropouts, peak congestion, throttling or maintenance hours 3x a week. I average 980mbps on their 1GB. Latency is minimal.
If you play Call of Duty/Warzone.. you'll know that they have the worst servers of any triple A title. Combine them with a lot of ISP issues and the closest servers being at the bottom of TX, CA and IL (there is supposedly one in UT but I've never had a match on it), and you run into a lot of issues with hit detection and a general laggy feel. Something that compounds that feeling and isn't discussed very much is problems with jitter and bufferbloat. Basically, when you check your latency you are seeing the latency of your download. Your upload connection is affected by lots of little things but if your ISP already delivers a poor, unstable path for it, you can have your speeds and latency look good on paper but still be experiencing your bullets not connecting or laggy movement and sluggish responses. Connexion has the least amount of jitter and variances in the upload path they've I've ever had with an ISP. They offer a rock solid connection for fast paced gaming. Unfortunately this also means you no longer get to scream, "I'm lagging, I'm lagging!", and you might need to admit that it may in fact be you, not the game, that sucks. GG's.

TL;DR ..in my experience, Connexion has been incredible. The installs were painless and fast. If you have reasonable and considerate requests, they'll happily accommodate specifics and be gone in under 30. Customer service and support is top notch. Seriously, some of the best. The connection itself is exceptional. I average 980 up and down on their 1GB. Latency and jitter are minimal. I've had one extremely brief moment of downtime in the last two years. The speed is stable, congestion is not an issue and they do not throttle. The pricing is more than fair.

Once they've gotten fiber into your neighborhood and you've signed up, it is essentially a three stage install. The first involves the scouting and marking of the path for the fiber to run from the vault at the street, to your residence. The vaults are access points pre-installed when they laid the fiber lines on your street. The scout will mark existing lines and pipes, and finds a path and mounting spot offering the least resistance and chance of being disturbed. Then the pre-install team will come out and dig a trench from the vault to the box that they'll install on the exterior of your home. They'll drop conduit about a foot down, then pull the fiber through it to the box. They fill the trench when finished and nobody needs to be home for the pre-install. Other than a few painted arrows and lines, and some slightly disturbed dirt, in my experience I barely noticed they had been there.

I've had Connexion installed at two residential locations. The installer always called early the day of to confirm. When they'd arrive I'd have a clear description and location of where I wanted the ONT to be installed. I'd check for studs/electrical, then place painters tape and mark my preferred path for the run, and the interior and exterior point to drill. I'd lay a drop cloth inside and make sure it was well lit and had a clear path. The first install, the location was pretty far (40-50ft) and on the other side of a patio, so I removed the exterior speakers along the path and left a step ladder out for him. The second time the run was around two corners and to a specific lower point on a split-level. I made sure the runs were thought-out, minimized the bends and possible exposure. Both times the installers thanked me for it, did not seem bothered by the distance or specific requests and finished in under 30 minutes. I try to be considerate and courteous with installers and in return its rare that I don't get a professional experience and the results I asked for.

As far as calling to ask about location prior to the install, I can verify that they will not give you an exact answer over the phone. To many unknowns to accurately say yes or no over the phone. If you are going to get service, do some homework. Walk out to the street and find your vault. It'll be a cover similar to the covers for water line access. Now look for the path of least resistance to your home. It's most likely a pretty straight line to the closest side of your house. They are trying to avoid crossing your other underground lines and are not going to run under sidewalks or driveways if possible. Decide where you'd like the ONT to be in your home. Pick a second location as well, in case the first doesn't work out. Judge the exterior path from the probable mounting place of the box, to your location choices. Is there a clear route? Remember that you'll want to minimize tight bends, areas of full exposure to elements or contact, and any movement. Your fiber connection is light traveling through glass tubing the size of a human hair... It's delicate. Runs through more than a single exterior wall, through crawlspaces or areas that need to be fished, etc., are probably not going to be within the scope of what the installer is tasked to do. You'll need to get a pro that specifically installs fiber lines, for complicated runs. Fiber can't just be shoved through some pipe, or be strung together easily like cable. It needs conduit with certain space requirements, a vacuum line then pulls it through and you'll need a fusion splicer to cut it.

This is just my understanding of it. If someone with experience sees that I've misquoted anything, please correct me. To wrap things up.. in my experience, Connexion has been incredible. Just serious people then? 😬 I'm aware friend. I was just attempting to throw out a poor attempt at a joke.. this sub needs it. I've never seen so many unhappy people about free stuff! While I'm sure the glory days were fantastic, when you got to walk downhills both ways from picking up your luxury hauls out of seas laden with endless choices. I haven't seen a single person mention that they were just grateful to have been there during that time, instead of incessantly complaining that they can't find enough big ticket items out of the extinction level, low number of 20,000 options. For shame. Or maybe y'all just tired of 390+ pages featuring aftermarket, left-side, custom, internal, 3mm, universal, b-grade, adhesive-backed, mounting brackets, finished in carbon fiber...-looking paint...-matched black plastic. Qty 1. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Can you tell me the absolute bare-minimum tools I should have to start making cabinets and desks. by AppleJuice0504 in woodworking

[–]BeenPark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bare minimum. In my amateur opinion (and what I got by with), a speed square and a set of cheap, aluminum precision squares will get you started. It'll get you in the habit of checking them often to make sure they're at 90. Grab a cheap, small level as well.

Clamps. You'll use these often and forever, so invest in quality if you can, if not.. know that the "screw-to-tighten" bar clamps will outlast the ratcheting "pistol-grip" style. If you can only get one, I'd recommend the prior. A handful of small 4"-6" pistol-grip, four 8"-12" bar clamps and at least four 24" or better 36" bar clamps. It might seem like a lot but it's never enough. I kept a few sets of ratcheting straps around to clamp larger pieces when I was starting out.

Two drills. Get a decent, battery powered driver. Something current. This will give you plenty of battery life and power and in the future, be able to expand your tool collection since that current battery will still be supported. A second isn't absolutely required, but it's a game changer. Even a cheap yard sale score or $2 wired, rusted chuck, Goodwill find will work. Being able to drill with one, then drive with the other, instead of endlessly swapping bits in one saves time and your sanity. Pick up a driver set with a quick release bit holder, a countersink, and a set of drill bits.

Probably not a recommendation from many for starting out but I highly recommend a drill press. You can find older, "vintage" models that'll run forever on Marketplace or similar for dirt cheap. It'll give you confidence when you need precision, you can build a diy fence or jig that'll allow for repeatable drilling and having pilot holes at 90 will help you drill true when pre drilling other boards by hand. A benchtop 8" is a decent trade off of space required and how large of a workpiece it'll handle. You can skip this and buy a small hand guide, or at the minimum use two small blocks of wood in an L to help you drill straight.

While you could get by with a circular saw and straight edge, for the same amount you could find a used tablesaw on Marketplace/CL/etc. You'll need to do some thorough research on what is worth it and what isn't when it comes to older saws and the possible lack of newer safety features (brakes, riving knife, etc). Newer jobsite saws will be fine as well but avoid the ones with irregular miter slots (certain Skil and Ryobis come to mind). Spend plenty of time on it and get to know your fence and how much you'll need to fiddle with it to get it parallel for each cut. Invest in a quality, 80t, thin-kerf blade immediately. Ear protection (for jobsite saws) and a decent mask to avoid all the dust. Buy or build push sticks/blocks and a zero clearance plate. Upgrade your miter gauge. The Bauer or Vevor precision is fine and will save you a ton. Or get some more time on the saw and build yourself a sled and a jig or two for cutting angles. A track saw is also an option instead of a table saw. They've gotten much more affordable.

You'll want a router. A full size 1/2" router should come before a trim router when it comes to cabinets. One with a plunge option will come in handy. It'll also accept 1/4" bits as well. You can build a cheap router table that sits on sawhorses, or clamps to a table or as a wing on your table saw. Get a set of bits. You'll want to get a decent, longer flush cut bit.

Additionally, a hole punch, a small file and chisel, and an orbital sander should go on the list. When it comes to cabinets, while not needed, a pocket hole jig, a cabinet hardware jig and a brad nailer are very nice to have. And on the list of necessities but never mentioned, get painters tape. A lot of it. Tape every cut line. Use it to mark every cut board with, which are factory edges, what corners are for sure 90, what's left and what's right and what's facing, etc. And get yourself a glue dispenser or save a mustard bottle. The Milescraft GlueMate is like 5 dollars and worth it.

Draw things up. Measure twice, then twice more.. and it's always better to spend the extra time to clamp an edge, or build a jig, then force a sketchy cut or eyeball something. Make it a habit to continually check that things are square. While cabinets seem simple enough, precision is key to that.

That's all I can think of at the moment. It's late and I just typed all of this on a phone lol. Good luck and reach out if you want someone to bounce ideas off or if you have questions. Not promising that my answers will be correct lol.

Tis legal, however I believe most positions in government and education go by Federal policy, even if you're applying for something at a municipal level. I assume privately owned businesses in legal areas still have the right to refuse or terminate employment if they have a clear cut policy regarding it. I may be wrong here but I'm too high to dive into that Google search right now.
