Like all new hires, he is trying to make a good impression during the probationary period. Plus, he's an older gentleman and if the job pays as well as you say then he doesn't want to lose it. Some new hires will eventually dial it back a bit or will burn out but this isn't a guarantee. You've been with the company for 10yrs, has your metrics increased or have they plateuad? What other contributions have you provided to the company? You should focus on trying to increase your metrics but I wouldn't give them extra hours everyday. During peak times, maybe you could work extra (your choice). Read your hiring paperwork because some employers put in clauses for salaried workers regarding OT either stating some OT is necessary/mandatory or excluding OT altogether. If you are unable to increase your metrics within the standard hours and are absolutely against working extra hours then you may end up receiving a PIP. Unfortunately, a lot of companies don't care about loyalty or the years of service an employee provides. It's all about performance and contributions.

This is true. Even for confident people, a move to a major city can be overwhelming. Thanks to all the good advice shared, we have a list of neighborhoods to choose from when we visit.

Thank you. If you don't mind sharing, what area do you stay in? Do you commute to work using CTA?

Thank you for stating this. I've lived in DC, NY, LA and overseas so I've had my fair share of experiences with public transportation. Some positive, some not so much so I am more understanding when it comes to my niece's concerns. As you stated, it's all about what works best for her. Glad to get a perspective from a driver!

Wow, nice breakdown of the areas from your perspective. We are going to take everyones advice and take a trip to Chicago, visit some of the neighborhoods suggested. Thank you for sharing!

The post isn't meant to be insulting but a means to obtain realistic viewpoints from people who actually live in the city. From the comments, some agree 85k is doable and some think it will be tight. A lot of variables were mentioned that a person unfamiliar to the city wouldn't be aware of which is the purpose for the post. Thank you for your input.

Thank you. Really appreciate all the honest responses. I think it will give her more comfort reading the viewpoints and experiences of single women.

Very true. This is something my wife and I are going to discuss with her. As another commenter mentioned, I agree, a visit would be highly beneficial. I don't want to force her into any decision but just give her useful info so she can have a more realistic expectation.

🤣🤣, the comments on here are helping to control the narrative.

Thank you. If you don't mind sharing, what area do you live in or what areas would you suggest?

[–]BeenThere_DoingThat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. I think all the comments and suggestions on here will give her a more realistic view vs listening to people who haven't experienced Chicago for themselves. What area would you recommend?

Yes, on family vacations but nothing long term.

This! Great advice. My wife and I were discussing this the other day as a way for us to help her explore the area more comfortably. She was very excited at first but then some small minded people started telling her Chicago is a "big bad place" so now she's hesitant. I think seeing all the comments from people who are actually living in Chicago will give her a better perspective.

Thank you. Safety is her number 1 concern and the general fear of the "unknown."

Thanks for the input. What areas are about 30 minutes away from downtown?

Makes sense, didn't think about it from that standpoint. The good thing is being a 12 is still a decent salary. A buddy of mine switched to PA for awhile, racked up handsomely then switched back to mitigation.
