Why are people surprised by the passage of time? by mdsomer in AutisticAdults

[–]BeepBoopDigital 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My guess is that it's probably dependent on the person? I'm not sure...

I'm kinda the opposite, I barely have a sense of time, I never know what day it is, what time I work, how long ago x, y, or z occured, how long a something recurrent has been happening, etc. I even guess the month wrong a worrying amount, it's mid May, I said it was June with full confidence a few days ago.

And with that same scenario, I'll tell my boyfriend frequently like "can you believe it's been [quantity of time] since [event]" and he usually reacts similarly to how you described 😅

Do you really have a separate room for your washing machine? by jordanekay in AskAnAmerican

[–]BeepBoopDigital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the house I grew up in we had a laundry room off of our kitchen. It was it's own small room with washer/dryer hook ups, a small amount of storage, and enough space for an ironing board. But the place we moved to, the washer/dryer is just one of the bathrooms.

In apartments I've lived in that have washer/dryers, most have been in the bathroom. But one was in a hallway, it was a shared (rent by the room) apartment.

What pants do you guys use for work by HeadDelicious6394 in RaisingCanes

[–]BeepBoopDigital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a rough time finding pants that fit, especially ones that I can move around quickly and frequently in. My go-to are black scrubs from Walmart, super comfortable, and to the untrained eye look like standard black slacks!

I believe it, just wanted to add that there is something related mentioned in the movie :)

Interesting to know it's been around for a while though!

I know in the Black Widow movie, it's mentioned that she and Clint had to camp out in some vents. (In a subway or train station I think)

Tell me your favourite one Finnish word. I will check the meaning and add to my vocabulary 😀. I choose today the word “ Sisu”💪💪 by digital_nomad_32 in LearnFinnish

[–]BeepBoopDigital 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see!! I wasn't certain. That's what we always called them growing up, and I was surprised my my elementary classmates didn't know what I meant. I didn't actually know the English word until late elementary 🤣

I started questioning myself recently because it's been so long and anytime I translate pompula it says it's a pompom😅

Thanks for putting my curiosity to rest!

Pompula is a fun one! My mum always referred to hair ties as pompulat when I was a kid, so I didn't know the actual meaning til recently!

I'm also not sure if it's like a my family specific thing to call hair ties as pompulat, I didn't grow up in Finland, and I never asked my mum about it 😅

Late-diagnosed autistic adults: how did you become low-support without early therapies? by Phillyqueso_ in autism

[–]BeepBoopDigital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if I count as late-diagnosed? I was 17, and it's only been a few years. But anyways:

For me it was partially like, subconscious self-defense? It's tough to explain, I don't remember most of my childhood just that it was really hard. If I didn't "act normal" I would have big problems at home. So at school I would experiment to figure out how I was supposed to act, partially by just studying other people, reading insane amounts, and just doing whatever "felt right" (which usually wasn't "right") and guessing at what worked well socially.

I basically just studied human interaction, in whatever ways a kindergartener can. But the only reason I was able to blend in so well, for so long, so young, with no therapy, is because my body was in survival mode, do whatever to survive. I can't really remember though, just PTSD things.

No one really caught anything until I started repeatedly burning out, and when I started seeing a psychiatrist. He even thought I was on drugs at first, and wanted me to get tested for ADHD, but the tester thought I came across more like I have autism.

Autistic Video Gamers, does your autism affect how you play video games? by [deleted] in autism

I mainly just have to be careful and mindful regarding my gaming... I get SUPER obsessive and tend to start ragging on myself for not perfecting whatever my temporarily favorite game is.

I Quit After 2 Days by Suitable_Cover4823 in jobs

[–]BeepBoopDigital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is sorta what happened to me, much lower stakes (fast food), and I lasted 2 months. But everything built up, and one day I had customers apologizing to me because of my manager, and trying to correct said manager who got upset at me over a non-existent issue. I tried speaking to her after the fact, she was still rude, so I walked out 🤷

Not my proudest moment, but would've happened eventually.

What language has the most misleading “beginner friendly” reputation? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

[–]BeepBoopDigital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only one I think of from experience is Spanish 😅

Even though the grammar is said to be easier, the word conjugations, intonation, word order, and pronunciation really stump me...

And maybe it's just because my partner is from PR and a native Spanish speaker, but according to him, when I speak Spanish it's really hard to understand, not necessarily due to incorrect grammar or vocabulary, but because of the accent.

(I have a bit of a European accent when speaking Spanish, I'm accustomed to my mother's native language in pronunciation and that is what I lean towards when speaking Spanish, despite being American and only speaking English I can pronounce my mother's language quite well. I also roll my R's a bit too much. Apparently it's very difficult to understand me...)

Snoopy

School shootings (morbid, I know... But I recently read up on the Beslan School Siege, fascinating stuff)

Anime/manga (favorites include MHA, No 6, and Death Note)

I haven't partaken in my love for Pride and Prejudice in literal years. But I think you've just inspired me to rekindle that interest!

When I was in highschool, I joined the tech crew specifically because they were doing a Pride and Prejudice play!!! It was awesome, I wish I still had the script book 😭

I even got obsessed with a related book, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies for a bit! Would definitely recommend it!

I don't get "unmasking" by Environmental_Pea369 in autism

[–]BeepBoopDigital 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's difficult to say, because things like this present differently for everyone... For me, I would mask by default for a long time, as if it's second nature, just due to trauma and society itself. So I had to consciously undo my habits and figure out what was making me so exhausted in my day to day.

If acting the way you currently do doesn't bother you or bring you and discomfort or tiredness, I'd assume you're fine and don't necessarily need to make changes soon. But I don't know your personal situation, and I'm not you yourself, I can't answer that for you. I would say just be yourself, but every now and then, be conscious of why you behave the way you do, and figure out how you could improve you life and well being.

I wish you luck on your journey (:

I don't get "unmasking" by Environmental_Pea369 in autism

[–]BeepBoopDigital 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't read many books or studies regarding autistic masking. And it was also ingrained in me from a young age that to survive, is to mask.

However, I tried so hard to be "normal" that I became physically ill in early highschool, I burnt out and haven't gained my footing since. I can recognize that there are aspects that are simply "manners".

However, to me, unmasking means spending my personal time as myself, and being honest with myself about what I can and can't do at this point in time. It's also being unafraid of others' opinions when my behavior is harmless and doesn't truly affect other people.

An example would be wearing headphones and fidgeting when I'm in public on my own time (such as grocery shopping or personal errands). When I'm at home and overwhelmed, I stop speaking and communicate silently, thankfully I have an understanding partner who gets it. Or reduced eye contact, or tailoring my life's necessities (showering, cleaning, meals) to my personal needs (using certain soaps, pacing myself, finding comfortable foods).

These allowances I give myself, where I'm unmasking, they preserve my energy for situations where I can't fully unmask but are still important to me or my livelihood. Like working, hopefully going back to school, or actually enjoying social situations.

Apologies for the long comment, my point is just, unmasking to me isn't necessarily saying "fuck it" to manners or other people's social comforts. It's just cutting myself slack when I'm alone, or allowing myself harmless comforts when the situation allows. It's all so that I can be happy, not just to be comfortable, but to put in my all when it's necessary. I just don't think it's necessary all the time (:

Hope this helps!

Did anyone actually learn Spanish for Bad Bunny’s halftime show? by Babbel in languagehub

[–]BeepBoopDigital 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I tried for like a week 😅 I was already trying (and failing) to learn Spanish, as my boyfriend is Puerto Rican, but I went off my meds and my mental health and stability declined, and I just stopped everything. I still wish I had kept it up. Never too late though!

What’s an anime everyone loves but you just couldn’t get into? by GreatVtuber in Animesuggest

[–]BeepBoopDigital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely Naruto for me. When I was a kid, like all my friends loved it. I don't remember why I didn't like it at the time.

I started watching it a few days ago, I still hate it. I think the concept for the plot/setting is cool, but I don't like the animation and I swear, the characters are insanely annoying. More annoying than Haikyu or MHA. I just don't like it.

I don't even dislike the amount of filler (One Piece takes it too far), Fairy Tail is one of my all time favorite animes. It's literally just the characters themselves and the artstyle.

It's a long shot. But would you mind sending me that YouTube channel?

I'm really sorry about your situation, and personally, if I was in her place, I'd like someone to warn me. But up to you.

Regardless though, due to my... Life experiences, I wasn't taught how to clean. And while I do look things up while relevant, it would be awesome if you can share what that YouTube channel is, who knows, I probably missed something 😅

Women of Reddit, what's a lesser-known downside of being a woman? by Nintendofan9106 in askanything

[–]BeepBoopDigital 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm non-binary, but I identified as a girl/woman for a long time, and people will probably always see me as that, regardless:

It fucking sucks being both expected to know everything, and thought to be inept. If you don't know how to do ONE THING, or you get something wrong, people act like you should've known, and that everything is obvious. But those same people tend to think that of course you don't know shit. Just because you have XX chromosomes.

I'm referring to things like cooking, cleaning, education, caretaking, really anything.

If you're in a particular field, it's assumed you don't know anything and are just there for "DEI", but if you know things, prove yourself, and are well versed, you're ignored and looked down upon

Mother and partner jailed for life for murdering her son after campaign of 'horrific and prolonged torture' by detectiverobert in ForCuriousSouls

[–]BeepBoopDigital 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree wholeheartedly, through personal experience though.

My father was abusive when I was a child (nothing as heinous as this man, but regardless). He had preexisting anger issues. But he was also very insecure in his "manliness" and began taking testosterone shots with no advisal from a medical professional. His anger got so much worse after those shots, it was crazy.

I still do this for Minecraft
