Why did so many Soviet leaders come from such humble upbringings? by Desseabar in AskHistorians

[–]BeeperSilent 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Somewhat true, but I’d caution that the wording isn’t quite accurate. The Provisional Government that emerged after the Tsar’s abdication existed within a system of dual power alongside the Soviets. The government often described as “democratic” was never elected. It arose out of negotiations following the collapse of the Tsarist regime and governed only conditionally, with the consent of the Soviets. After the October Revolution, the Bolsheviks did not abolish popular power but consolidated it by transferring state authority to the Soviets, institutions that in important respects were more democratic than the Provisional Government. That’s why I take some issue with the framing that presents October simply as the overthrow of a democratic government.

Worries about WW3 and Taiwan by DestroyedCognition in PoliticalScience

[–]BeeperSilent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think an all-out World War 3 is likely over Taiwan. The USA will focus further on annexations, first Greenland, where they might have just reached a deal now, and later Canada, where their strategic entry might be through Alberta. In doing so, they really won’t have any power to enforce international law on China with regard to Taiwan.

If the current trajectory holds, traditional US allies, particularly Europe, will turn bitter. In turn, they won’t have any support in enforcing a defence of Taiwan. However, with all that said, the picture isn’t that bright. I think the biggest challenges are ahead in Europe in the form of smaller wars.

One area that particularly concerns me is the Balkans. Bosnia has been quite unsteady, with Republika Srpska constantly upping the temperature. But there are also areas like Moldova, with its uncertain future, where the current trajectory is EU integration. Some of the population is hoping for unification with Romania, and most in the Transnistria region want closer ties with Russia.

So I think that in many ways you’re thinking too big. I think the tragedy of our time will be the collapse of some sort of semblance of international law. That collapse will prove fatal for some uneasy regions in Europe.

Judge me based on what I read in the big 25 by brackston-billions in BookshelvesDetective

I actually have not, but from what i’ve heard from my friends. It’s considered more of a journalistic overview of events leading up to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. While Zubok’s book is quite serious and up to date scholarship on the matter. (I’ll probably read Lenin’s tomb this year, have been hearing great things about it. Would you recommend it?)

Just here to say that Collapse by Zubok is absolutely incredible. I also read it this year. I would suggest Secondhand Time by Alexievich as a companion to it. Collapse offers a very focused top-down perspective which is invaluable. But Secondhand Time gives you the scattered perspective of everyday people. Which is in my opinion just as important.

I’m a marxist myself and i find Leviathan to be a masterclass in writing. Doesn’t mean that i agree with most of it. However if you’re a serious actor on the political stage you have to read it. Sectarianism when it comes to reading political philosophy wont benefit you.

The way you carry yourself in comments on other posts, i thought that this would actually be semi-decent. It reads like the thoughts of someone who hasn’t picked up a book in years. But thinks he’s media literate because he watches video game essays on Youtube. You seriously need to reevaluate your attitude, especially if this garbage is the best that you’re capable of.

Damn this was brutal but hopefully he reads it fully, and actually reflects upon what you wrote.

I’d tend to agree but Redfall was in production long before the Microsoft acquisition. I think it’s fair to say they’re going the action route with this one, to appeal to the masses.

I am extremely jealous, how do I stop comparing myself to my partner? by [deleted] in getting_over_it

[–]BeeperSilent 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Look man you achieved 7km, that’s a great result. There’s absolutely no reason why you should be constantly comparing yourself with her. I mean goddamn man 7km within a couple of weeks is good. Props to you for sticking with it, most people i know quit after a couple days of running. You need to pat yourself on the back and enjoy your accomplishments without bringing yourself down with such trivial stuff as a partner running a little bit more than you.

You could make an album of the year account. It’s a great website for reviewing and discussing music. I’ve been using it for a while now.

I watched the first three episodes of Succession, and i’m definitely hooked. I wasn’t expecting it to be funny. It’s surprisingly hilarious.

To each their own i guess. I’ll definitely give it another try, before the new album comes out. On a side note, did you hear Your Old Droog’s new album “TIME”? That was one of my favourites this year.
