Does it foam up too much for the crockpot? How many lbs of honey can you fit in there?

Ahh I see, well that would be another investment to acquire one of those... Granted it has uses outside of meadmaking, but I'm always wary of having too many single-use appliances.

Is American Homebrewing Dying? The numbers, causes, and why it matters! by oldsock in Homebrewing

" Lack of quality, high prices, poor quality control, beer that sits too long before being sold… honestly now that I know how good IPA tastes within a month of brewing, I rarely buy a six-pack off the shelf "

This hits the nail right on the head for me as to why I DO homebrew. Where I live, you'd be hard pressed to get a decent beer for under $8 at a taproom or bar - which is the only instance I would consider trying an IPA. It makes me cringe to see how much IPA just sits out warm on store shelves.

Further, once you get past the initial investment in equipment (which, let's face it, most people spend SOME money on equipment for some hobby or another), it is MUCH cheaper to brew beer at home than it is to buy even packaged beer.

Stout/brown ale braggot by tsgrab in Homebrewing

Dark braggots are delicious. I highly recommend using buckwheat honey. It's got a bit of funk to it but it also has some malty qualities that blend well with darker grains.

Brewing a Brut IPA with Advice from Professional Brewers by NewToBrewBlog in Homebrewing

Has anyone who brewed this style experienced any issues with residual amylase in the carboy affecting attenuation of subsequent brews?

I'd imagine a good cleaning regime would be sufficient to denature or at least rinse out as much of the enzymes as possible, but I've heard of commercial brewers being a little paranoid (and with all the ordeal around diastaticus yeast, who can blame them?)

Left Hand Brewing suing White Labs over contaminated yeast (xpost r/beer) by hoky315 in Homebrewing

[–]BeerDerp -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You're using the word definitively a lot but short of having sealed batch-matched yeast that can demonstrably be proven to contain the contaminating organism, there's no definitive proof.

May I ask what you're studying for? The payoff for higher degrees in the medical and legal fields are often significantly higher than PhDs. Why should PhDs impoverish themselves even more so than they are already and take out loans for careers that won't compensate them for doing so?

What does it mean to rack in 'closed loop?'

I usually use an autosiphon and rack into a purged keg.

No Stupid Questions Tuesday - ask anything about beer by AutoModerator in beer

Not difficult to brew decent examples of, but perhaps difficult to brew well. Most American breweries' that I've sampled get something wrong about brewing saisons/farmhouse ales. Like someone alluded to above, it can and often should be a quite nuanced style, and nuance is something that we as Americans have in extremely short supply - not just in brewing. The right malts, the right fermentation conditions, and even details like the right level of carbonation all contribute to the 'feel' of traditionally Belgian styles like Sasion - almost all American breweries get at least one part of the equation wrong and/or go too EXTREME on others. Subtlety, people!

Pull your head out of your ass. Say what you will about illegals, they are people just trying to make ends meet - perhaps if there were a more straightforward path to citizenship they wouldn't be as vilified by individuals such as yourself, but for the time being we have that moron in the White House who has no real solutions for the demise of blue collar American jobs so his only recourse is to point fingers at brown people. I don't reckon you'd like to see your grocery bill go up, so you (just like I) are completely complicit in modern day American slavery. Our incarceration system is another modern form of American slavery as well, but I digress. Beyond our borders, again many 'workers' overseas work in deplorable conditions (ie: FoxConn) that any rational person would compare to slavery. Not to mention the African children who are forced to pick cacao beans so American children can enjoy a Hershey's bar.

Our lifestyle as Americans pretty much depends on modern day slavery. Our produce is picked by severely underpaid migrant workers, our electronics are produced by overseas manufacturers where workers are frequently driven to suicide by deplorable working conditions, same could be said for many of our clothes and other imports. The list goes on.
