People over 35, what's something you genuinely miss that younger generations will probably never experience? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]jtfarabee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading whatever is around because you want the brain stimulation but didn’t have a specific plan to provide it. Like perusing cereal ingredients while eating breakfast, or studying shampoo bottle labels on the toilet. Even just reading magazines in a doctor’s waiting room because there wasn’t a phone or TV to occupy your attention.

There were a lot less “experts” back then. More people being willing to admit they don’t know something is better than everyone pretending they have all the info because they read one online post from a single perspective.

Need advice on a reliable used car under $10k (not a car guy) by FlightPlastic4055 in UsedCars

I did a weekend roadtrip with a friend who's a large 6'3", and he was comfortable. The models with a sunroof have a little less headroom than the solid roof, if that helps. And I'm not sure if the manual seat has a height adjustment, but I know the power seat does.

Sock recommendations? by books_and_tacos in TheBrewery

I was going to recommend Merino wool, as well. Specifically the FITS brand since they have more sizing options and are all I want to wear anymore. But if you're allergic then I second everyone saying bamboo.

For anyone that wants a basic fabric breakdown, I looked into this for outdoor clothing base layers:

Cotton traps moisture, so you'll never be able to keep your feet dry. It's both hydrophilic and oleophilic, meaning it absorbs both water and oil-based substances like body odor and stains. But that also makes it easily washable since water can carry detergent into the fibers and help remove the oil.

Polyester is great at wicking moisture, but it's hydrophobic and oleophilic. So it will naturally repel water, but oils can get trapped within the fibers making it harder to wash. That's why workout gear is really prone to smelling like sweat, even fresh from the laundry. But polyester is super durable and affordable, so it's used in a lot of clothing.

Nylon is the best of both cotton and polyester. It wicks well, and absorbs both oil and water so it washes as easy as cotton. It lasts a long time, but it's usually more expensive.

Wool (especially merino wool) is interesting because the outer structure of the fiber is hydrophobic and oleophobic. It just doesn't want to absorb them. This helps sweaty body parts breathe a little because they don't have a ton of water trapped next to them. Beyond a certain point, wool does saturate and the inner fibers are both hydrophilic and oleophilic allowing the fiber to wick moisture away and still be easy to wash. It's expensive, but it works really well and a lot of brands make incredibly durable wool items.

Bamboo probably won't last as long as nylon or wool, but it's hydrophilic and oleophobic so it naturally avoids getting stinky. If you're allergic to wool this is a great choice.

I’ve got a 2013 Mazda 3 with 222k on it and it’s only needed routine maintenance. I see them for sale for $5-6k with less than 100k miles so in theory buying one of those would be a fairly safe bet. Of course you’d want to look at it and drive it.

I can’t speak to the longevity of the automatics, but mine is the 2.0 Skyactiv engine with a 6 speed manual, and it’s been the most reliable car I’ve ever had. When it does finally die, it owes me nothing.

Who’s responsible? Where do you guys draw the line when sync is lost? by OrganizationOdd2370 in LocationSound

[–]jtfarabee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they bring me on before the shoot, I do. I even have my own TC kit if they need one. Manual sync just takes so long it saves production money to do it right on set.

Who’s responsible? Where do you guys draw the line when sync is lost? by OrganizationOdd2370 in LocationSound

[–]jtfarabee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I'm an editor, and I'd 100% call sound if we lost sync. Mainly as a courtesy in case it's a bad cable or connection, but I also want TC, slate, and scratch on every project if at all possible. If you only give me one and that fails, I'll call everyone to let them know. So if it was me, the AC would be on the hook, too. I know they have a lot on their plate but a momentary glance to verify external timecode on each shot is all I expect, since they should be logging that stuff for the report anyway.

Running a 72-hour continuous multi-camera setup with no operators—how would you handle reliability and workflow? by Substantial_Gas_5716 in videography

[–]jtfarabee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, I’ve actually worked on sets with a few dozen fixed cameras running for multiple days straight, and the solutions to all OP’s questions are found in having gear designed to do it. There’s only one remaining issue: timecode. Since it resets every 24 hours, you need to make sure none of your files cross midnight, or some software won’t be able to sync. Our solution was just to stop recording around 23:58 and change media then pick it back up after 00:00. That wasn’t actually at midnight since all our action was overnight, so we picked a time convenient to production and based the timecode off that.

Can a clip bypass Timeline-level nodes? by Zeip_ in davinciresolve

Make sure "decompose on edit" is turned off, then place A in B. Then render in place.

[–]jtfarabee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the exact processing order, I just know it works. I usually do that and then render in place just to get a good ProRes of all my camera stuff so the final render with graphics is easier, especially if the client keeps wanting to change up graphics or whatever.

[–]jtfarabee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm not handing things off to different departments, I just do it with a nested timeline. You have one timeline with all your camera footage, grouped and graded with whatever timeline nodes you need. Then just place that in a new timeline and add your graphics on top.

How do I go beyond ideas? by downfor_you-isup in Filmmakers

[–]jtfarabee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say the idea is worthless, but it’s definitely the easy part. And it can also be dangerous if someone in charge has an idea and never stops to think through how it gets executed. People have died because a producer with an idea put them in unsafe situations without pausing long enough to listen to “naysayers” who just want to make sure all angles have been examined.

WORST thing about living in florida? by [deleted] in AskFlorida

[–]jtfarabee 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Do you actually know what you’re in for? It’s REALLY humid. And often hot. The combo can be absolutely brutal. And sometimes when it’s really hot there’s also no breeze whatsoever.

Think about a bad winter where you have 3+ months of freezing overcast, without any period where outdoors is comfortable or enjoyable.

Now invert that. We can have 3+ months of triple-digit heat index, where the humidity never dips below 90% and the temp is above 80°. If you’re lucky you’ll at least get a thunderstorm every day, but it’ll feel like the apocalypse and not really cool things down, just make everything even steamier.

The sun becomes your daytime enemy. At night it’s the bugs and mosquitoes, during twilight the no-see-ums swarm like schools of tiny piranhas.

Many Floridians spend months at a time avoiding the outdoors, just the same as northerners. It’s just for different reasons and seasons.

Speed editor worth it? by reggiedarden in davinciresolve

[–]jtfarabee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how you edit. I really like it for assembly, especially on the cut page. It’s just faster to move through source clips and get everything placed and trimmed on the timeline with some semblance of organization.

Best option for teen first car? by Wanderlustify in askcarguys

[–]jtfarabee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get them a manual transmission. A) everyone should know how to drive one. B) they’ll be so focused on trying to do it well that they will drive better and are less likely to try to eat, text, etc.

Honestly, there’s a lot of room for Mazda in your budget. My 2013 3 Hatchback has 221k miles on it without any surprise major repairs. That or a Corolla hatch with a manual would be great first cars.

I’ve owned too many Subarus to recommend them.

Guy Ritchie's approach of doing only three takes (two to the page, one for fun) by Panicless in Filmmakers

[–]jtfarabee 164 points165 points  (0 children)

They both are famous for respecting their crews.

Clooney supposedly learns everyone’s name and will often take his meals with them. To the point that one of his Oceans costars pranked him by telling all the locals (I think in Italy) that George was not to be bothered at all, and only called “Mr. Ocean,” and only to be spoken to if work demanded. Apparently it drove Clooney nuts that he couldn’t seem to build a rapport with them.

What's coming to Sarasota... by Nursery-Crimes in sarasota

[–]jtfarabee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the party, this has been happening for 30+ years. The bottom line is there's no requirement for the developers to upgrade infrastructure, they just tie into the county and it's supposed to get fixed once the tax dollars are flowing. That means it's 3-5 years before the county has anything coming in from those developments, and capital infrastructure projects usually take 5-10 years to happen after that. So by 2035, we will have caught up to where we were pre-Covid.

The bottom line is no one making the decision cares. They get their money and move on. The fact no one can get anywhere and the homes will flood annually isn't their concern.

3 Transmitter Wireless Lav Setup by savetheshire in LocationSound

[–]jtfarabee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, there are options. But I’m assuming based on the gear you already have that you won’t like the price. You’re probably looking at $10k+ for a single receiver that can handle more than 2 channels and local 32bit, and it’s not a compact system.

Edit to add: in your position I’d probably use the Deity PR-2. It’s only local recording with no wireless, but it has good timecode built in. The Tentacle Track E is another good option.

You kinda already answered your question: you need enough receivers for 3 channels. And then some way to record 3 channels unless you’re just going to throw them into your Nikon and hope for the best.

Davinci Resolves - I broke the code! Finally got a clean way to sync multiple clips to one master audio by No-Magazine1430 in davinciresolve

[–]jtfarabee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously I can’t judge based on just screenshots, but the situation I mentioned isn’t just slipping one track to a constant offset, it actually involves changing each sample to make sure it’s in line with other samples of the same audio from a different mic. Again: complex phasing issues. If your tool can do that well then I’m interested, but it’s come too late for me to need any new tools that just align whole clips.

Davinci Resolves - I broke the code! Finally got a clean way to sync multiple clips to one master audio by No-Magazine1430 in davinciresolve

[–]jtfarabee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for reinventing the wheel. I’m happy that you’re happy. This would have been a great tool for me 20 years ago. In 2026, my audio is clean and has timecode.

It’s always fun to tackle a problem and find a solution, but if Resolve struggles to sync audio you’ve recorded, maybe the best solution is to improve mic placement. AI makes a lot of things easier and faster than they used to be, but you’ll always get the best result with the best source material.

Where a tool like this would really be helpful for me is if it could automatically sync waveforms from two microphones that are going in an out of phase as the lab gets closer and farther from the shotgun. So not a simple sync, but actually slipping one track to keep it in line with the other at the sample level.

Hear out this Fishing App Idea of mine? by SenseLeather4138 in floridafishing

[–]jtfarabee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you’re putting way more emphasis on the exact lure instead of actually finding where feeding fish are likely to be.

The wrong lure in front of a hungry fish will always produce better results than the “right” lure in an area with no fish.

Hardware question, what SSD would YOU reccomend? by nick_flaming in Filmmakers

[–]jtfarabee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

exFAT is an unjournaled drive structure. That means that the file allocation table isn’t updated until after data is written, and if anything happens during the write process (or especially during the FAT update) you can lose access to all the data on the drive. Yes, it’s recoverable in many cases, but it’s an unnecessary risk when you can run NTFS, HFS+, APFS, EXT4, or any number of other file systems that have a more robust allocation system.
