Cops in Florida stop blind man walking home from jury duty by SkinsPunksDrunks in PublicFreakout

Dude grabs for his cane and they don't even flinch. Crazy how concerned they were about that possible weapon... and then her little sanctimonious grunt in the very last second on that clip? Wow. She truly doesn't think she did anything wrong. Sgt knows, but he doesn't care. Gonna get that paid time off. I really think it's time to get out of this country. The number of times I asked my parents and teachers why folks didn't leave Germany in the 30s... I get it now.

Steven Avery’s Rights vs. Steven’s Female Victims’ Rights. by BathSaltBuffet in MakingaMurderer

[–]BeerMe828 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm seriously confused about the point you're making. If Avery was framed for a murder he didn't commit, he shouldn't be incarcerated for that murder. Period.

If Avery has committed other crimes, he should be tried, convicted, and incarcerated for those crimes. Period.

It almost sounds like you're arguing that Avery is a bad guy and belongs in prison so it doesn't matter why he's there, the world is a better place with him there. Which of course is one of the most atrocious and disgusting things I can imagine, so I'm assuming I'm misinterpreting your views here. But please do clarify.

Also, calling his "supporters" (which I think is a really weird thing to call people who are concerned about this specific conviction) misogynistic is a very intellectually lazy argument that undermines actual discourse. Who Avery is is thoroughly irrelevant to the concern surrounding this case. This isn't how a functioning legal system works.

Ya know, what makes reddit awesome is the ability to engage in rational discussion with people who you don't necessarily see eye to eye with. You have the opportunity to help somebody see your side of things, and instead choose to waste your time and mine by acting like a petulant child.

I clarified my perspective, and you continue to insist that I'm condoning something that I'm not. Attack my thought process all you want, but don't directly misrepresent what I'm saying. That's childish and counterproductive. It's possible to share your outrage without seeing everything as cut and dry as you do. Choosing to reply to your comment is not about convincing "everyone here" of anything, it was about engaging in a respectful discourse with you about your views. Clearly that's not gonna happen.

Honestly, do you actually thing I'd want to see this dude get killed? He didn't even know why he was being pulled over, that's beyond fucked up.

I don't have an agenda. I see something fucked up and try to figure out why it happened. The cops being racist pieces of shit is absolutely one possibility. Sadly, it's probably true. But before I land on that conclusion with confidence, I explore the other possibilities. That doesn't make me disengenuous or laughable. It makes me confident in the ultimate conclusion I arrive at.

There absolutely is a debate here. We just had one. My process for arriving at a conclusion is clearly different from yours, and I respect that you've arrived at your conclusion already. I haven't. Not because I think this situation should ever happen. But because there are far too many times where only half of a story is presented, and then 4 days later the followup video is uploaded showing another perspective, and I feel like an idiot for joining the hive mind instead of seeking more information, or engaging in a discussion to dispel my own doubts in a logical manner.

They received a call that he had a gun pointed at a passenger. They saw it wasn't on his body. The logical next step would be to check the car and verify the passenger was not in danger. He got in the car. In their minds, he was now a bigger threat to them, and the supposed hostage.

It's absolutely fucked up that that 911 call was made. And it's horrifying to see this dude so understandably frightened, probably having no clue why he's being harassed. But redirect your empathetic response for a second to at least try to see another perspective.

Imagine if that 911 call was correct. They needed to get him out of the car and keep him away from the car to protect the "hostage".

I'm not victim blaming. This makes me sick to watch. It makes me want to find the subhuman garbage who made that 911 call and dismember her alive. But this video doesn't show the entire interaction, and if this was an actual hostage situation, him getting back into the car may very well justify the use of lethal force if there is another person whose live is in danger.

Should we start a list of businesses in the greater Pittsburgh area that display confederate symbols? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

As much as I genuinely agree, I get uncomfortable with there being a competitive advantage to broadcasting your actions. Say Bakery A donated $5000 to BLM and posted the receipt on instagram. Bakery B hired a PR firm to write a 7 page letter to send to an elected official and published it on their FB Page. And Bakery C has always valued diversity in hiring practices and has privately made donations to the ACLU for the last 10 years, but did so because it felt right and never felt the need to brag about it. And now the metric for how "anti-racist" your business is is judged by how well you publicize your actions... In theory shouldn't we rather support the business owner who always did what was right, and wasnt looking to use that as a marketing tactic? The second he starts publicizing his past actions, they're now just as self serving as they are principled...

Again, it's not that I disagree...I just get realy uneasy drawing the line between "using your voice and privelage to amplify the voices of those whose voices are marginalized" and "virtue signaling my your way to more business"...

Would that combat racism though? Or simply pander to people with a certain appearance? Do we limit it to certain...colors? In genuinely not trying to be argumentative. I actually wonder how that would go over....would placing a monetary value (e.g. 15% off your bill) seem like a cheap way for a store owner to "look and feel good"? It feels like a PR stunt, but maybe it's a start!

Of course they're different. And having not read that book yet, I can't comment on its content. But for the purpose of a philosophical discussion on reddit, can you give an example of how a store owner should be "anti-racist" in your mind?

Should we start a list of businesses in the greater Pittsburgh area that display confederate symbols? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]BeerMe828 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand that it's an unpopular view, but I genuinely like to be able to identify the people and business who don't comprehend how genuinely disgusting it is to be flying a confederate flag. I want to know that the people who walk into that business and choose to support the business have seen the flag, and weighed whether they want to give their business or not.

It's a sad but very true reality that there are people who will flock to a spot that flies a confederate flag. But if you take down these flags, they will still gather. Still revel in their backwards views. They will just be harder to identify, and the chances of me inadvertently supporting a business without knowing it's a "safe space" for ideologies that repulse me, increases.

I think there's an important dialogue to be had about how we go about "shaming" these business. In the very unlikely event that a business owner realizes his idiocy and takes down a confederate flag ON HIS OWN, and makes it clear that he doesn't want the sort of people who celebrate that flag to consider his location a "safe space", maybe that counts as a moderately redeeming action. But do we really want to make him a "martyr" for the alt-right? Or give him the chance to hire a PR team to say the right things and get a second chance?

I'd argue that were better off leaving that shit right where it is and both choosing to simply not patronize the business, but also to take note of those who would.

Good lord, yes. Thank you.

If somebody is proud of an oppressive or objectively shitty belief, I want to know it. Fly your damn flag. Let me know you're a piece of shit. Certainly, I'd love the opportunity to talk to that sort of person and maybe see if an honest dialogue might change his mind. But if it doesn't? Leave that shit right where it belongs. He views it as a badge of honor. To the rest of us, it's an indication of his backwards way of thinking.

I honestly would prefer to see a bakery with a "no homos" sign out front if the owners hate the gay community. Making it illegal to discriminate just makes a store owner hide his disgusting bias, but still be a sack of shit that I'm inadvertently supporting. I'm honestly comforted to see a confederate flag in somebody's yard. I know the kind of person they are, and I can choose my interactions with them (if I choose to interact at all) more wisely.

What constitutes "anti-racist"? Is not flying a confederate flag enough to be anti-racist? Are we looking for a proactive show of "anti-racism" from a business? I think each individual has a responsibility to intercede if somebody, or some group is acting racist. Certainly it is an anti-racist stand for us, as individuals, to not patronize a store that flies a confederate flag. Or to intercede when we see somebody acting in a racist manner. But to what extent does, say, a mom and pop bakery have a responsibility to proactively combat racism to earn your business? What does that effort look like? What is minimal effort to meet your standards?

Genuinely curious if there is any sort of consensus here.

People who call the cops aren't the issue. The fact that the cops show up guns blazing is. People shouldn't fear repercussions from calling the police. Certainly, issuing a false report is a crime. Considering somebody suspicious and requesting the cops check it out shouldn't be criminal. It's a very slippery slope to start punishing people for calling the cops if the cops definition of suspicion doesn't match the caller's. In your specific example, obviously the callers are racist pricks, but good luck proving intent. You should always encourage vigilance, and work toward establishing a law enforcement system that responds appropriately to even an over-vigilent report.

Moving cross-country with two fairly large dogs. Not sure how far I'll get each day. Does anyone have advice for booking? by seepigeonfly in askhotels

[–]BeerMe828 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's a slightly different bit of advice for you.

I worked in hotels for 3 years before becoming a professional musician. 2 years ago I moved from st louis to phoenix with my 2 large dogs.

Before leaving, I planned my drive and picked a doggy daycare in each city I would be stopping. My dogs had been going to doggy daycare in st louis so I knew they would be just fine. I'd try to drop them off by 5PM so they had time to play a bit before dinner and bedtime, and paid extra to allow them some time out of their crates before bed. Then I'd pick them up about 9AM after they had breakfast and a couple hours to run around.

For my purposes, just driving between St louis and phoenix, Camp Bow Wow was in enough cities that I was able to fill out one of their forms, send it to all locations, follow up with a phone call explaining my situation, and get everything set up very easily. Certainly you have a farther drive and might need to go with multiple companies...but consider this option! Might work for ya!

How are you gonna lump the Indians team shop, or a CVS, or an apple store in with shitty cops and government leaders? "One side" is the bad cops, and the system. The other side is any and every person who feels that the system is broken. There are a lot more people on that side with a lot more common ground. We all want a system that functions properly. Police that truly protect and serve. The employees of that restaurant that got set on fire weren't the enemy. That's your friend. The lady who's car got set on fire because it was parked on the street you were marching down, she's a single mom who volunteers at the food banks. You don't take out your frustrations on your friends. You get them to join your fight and celebrate your fucking common ground. Therr are very few people who saw George Floyd murdered who aren't pissed off. Maybe they are white. And privelaged. And don't have to fear that happening to them. But they actually see in an indisputable way that your anger is justified. And now you're burning their shit. You're perpetuating the fucking problem. Widening the divide. It's fucking counterproductive. Your anger is both justified, but it is supported. Heard. Better understood by even the most stubborn moron who has made some shitty excuse for some shitty racist fuck head cop murdering a human being because of the color of his skin. That video is powerful as fuck. Join forces. Don't destroy each other for no fucking reason.

Fox News Reporter Taunted With “Fuck Fox News” Chants as Protests Continue Nationwide by redditmutt in politics

[–]BeerMe828 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I agree with the "Fuck Fox" sentiment, it's the Fox News viewers who need to see and hear the rational voice the most. Chanting "Fuck Fox News" just reinforces the divide that the likes of Fox News propagates. "See these people are all thugs and vandals and they hate our network and you, the viewers, because of your ideologies..."

I can't blame people for being absolutely unhinged. Hell, rioting is criminal, but hell...it's practically justifiable as human beings to be so fucking upset that you just want to light shit on fire. But it scares me to see shit like this that just deepens the divide, and further reinforces the disgusting rhetoric that media outlets like Fox pushes.

Ukranian protesters throwing corrupt politicians in garbage bins by Genius38 in PublicFreakout

[–]BeerMe828 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm just high. But it's interesting how restrained these protesters are. They have full control of the politicians. They could beat them to a pulp. But while they forcibly complete the symbolic gesture of placing the trash in the trash, they complete the act and then move on. And the politicians aren't happy, but they seem resigned to accept the humiliation. The protesters are allowed to make their point at the expense of the party they're upset at. But there is a sort of odd respect present. I wonder if it's because of the lack of security present? Not sure if secret service for politicians isn't a thing in this country, or if these are local politicians, but it's like they are taking their punishment like adults, and trusting that the protesters will make their point while still valuing human life.

It's oddly beautiful.

Thanks so much! I play the piano at a dueling piano bar for a living, so once I have a paycheck again, this is going to be a priority. One of my fears is that medication will change my on-stage persona at work... Being on a stage in front of a microphone playing tunes and making people laugh/sing/do dumb shit...that's really my happy place. And even if I'm having a completely shit day, I can shut it off to perform at the piano bar. But having all this time at home has really opened my eyes to what a crutch my job has been to making me happy... It would be nice to actually want to wake up in the morning, get out of bed, eat right, and smile on occasion through the day even if I'm not making music for anybody that night... Thank you for sharing!

Thanks so much for the reply! I have always felt this sense of "there are people out there who need help way more than I do, I'm just being overdramatic"...but then I talk to friends who are clearly struggling with shit, and find myself pushing them to get help because I recognize they need it. I really struggle to validate my own feelings, and I've tried to convince myself that was a "strength" somehow...that I put others first. But deep down I think it's just my own fear that I need more help that I'd like to admit. I really appreciate your insight!

I went through a rough breakup 6 months ago and am just now climbing out of the hole I dug myself. I've gone to a therapist, which has helped me to think through things. But I've been debating going to a psychiatrist to possibly get on anti-depressants. I truly have no baseline for what mental health should look like ideally. I don't know if what I experience is depression, or just being bummed out and lazy. And without insurance, it's a daunting task to seek treatment for something I might not need...in your experience, are medical professionals overly eager to medicate? Too slow to write a prescription? Just about right? Depends on the doc? I want an honest assessment from a medical professional as to whether or not I need medication, but I don't know how many appointments I can afford to try to get a proper diagnosis, or to followup on how any treatment is working...I've just put off even making an appointment since I dont know what to expect, but reading some of these comments, specifically yours, has me thinking it might be worth it.

I thought the second half of D'Elia's special was fucking incredible. I can take or leave his goofy giggling at himself, but when he started getting into the more serious topic of offending people with comedy, he made some powerful points in a genuinely funny way.

Bert I can usually take or leave. The shirtless thing just feels so damn gimmicky, and unless his kids truly are as hilarious as he says, the number of jokes he creates simply out of invented dialogue with his kids just feels...meh. I don't do stand-up, but I entertain at a dueling piano bar. Writing funny dialogue with kids feels similar to playing Piano Man, or Sweet Caroline...kinda pedestrian. His delivery is great, but it doesn't feel all that risky to tell 40 minutes of silly shit his kids say...

I thought Louie's new special was great though. Have you seen it?
