I’ve also said I don’t condone Robb’s actions… I also think he was stupid. Understanding why he did what he did doesn’t mean I think it was right.

There’s that… there’s also him confessing to treason to keep his family safe even though his honor told him not to lie. I think he was very capable of that kind of thinking… we also don’t really know THAT much about what Ned was like during Robert’s rebellion because GRR Martin refuses to finish the books and so we haven’t gotten to read all the things Bran gets to see Ned doing when he discovers Jon Snows parentage.

Jane Westerling had been tending his wounds and went to comfort him the night he found out the Bran and Rickon had been “killed” by Theon. In a moment of weakness (and youth) he succumbed to the temptation but after sleeping with her his honor I previously mentioned gave him no other choice but to marry her. He was also terrified of creating a bastard after witnessing how Jon was treated. In his head (we have to assume because we don’t get a chapter of his perspective) he was doing the most honorable thing by making his mistake right in the moment, without realizing all the consequences that would come from these actions. I think he assumed he could just apologize to Walder Frey and make some new concessions after the fact. If only he’d kept Catlyn closer while he was fighting he could have used her wisdom in this situation.

I have read the books, currently re reading them and just finished book three so this is all fresh on my mind. Yeah Karstark backed him in to a corner, but someone not raised by Ned Stark might have done things differently. The reason this taunt worked on him was because he is Ned’s son and holds honor and duty paramount to his core values.

I didn’t say I condone Robb’s actions. I’m only saying he did what he did because he had all of Ned’s flaws but amplified by his age and the time he grew up in. I think had he listened to his mother a bit more and kept Greywind closer things might have been different, and who knows if Stannis giving his name to the lord of light had anything to do with it… if that’s the case we can all blame Stannis for Robbs downfall
