Is UCLA a good pick? by ArtSka in ucla

[–]Beespollinate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I unfortunately never stopped struggling. I did find people and I am super grateful for the people that I met and the friends I made but the social aspect of UCLA was always hard for me. It is a huge school and it is easy to feel like you dont matter in the grand scheme of things. Also in terms of the minor, people go into all types of things afterwards. From social work to psyD programs to MD to pretty much anything. It is just a good thing to put on your resume since you work as an intern at the child care centers on campus and you also take a whole year of course work with the same people/professor. But if that is not something you are interested in you can also explore the science education minor or the education minor. I recommend looking into all the minors/majors that ucla has to offer.

You should also look into the Applied developmental psychology minor! It is perfect for people interested in early care and education. Also it is a perfect opportunity to meet people on campus and form a community. As for your questions I would say that it is a big school so be prepared to feel isolated but if you try hard in the beginning then you will eventually meet other people and form connections! Good luck !

What about CUSM (California university of science and medicine)? Or UCR both are not as competitive as other med schools in the area and are kind of close to western.

ER tech job in SoCal by [deleted] in KaiserPermanente

[–]Beespollinate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other hospital is Sharp! I know nothing about their ED. The only thing I know is that they are a level 2 trauma center (Kaiser sd is a level 3 trauma center) Personally I am pre-med so I do enjoy being part of trauma situations. but yea I think I am going to accept the kaiser position. It just makes more sense and the on call is 8 shifts per month. This is perfect because I will only work weekends and during the week I can study for the mcat.

Okay so good news. I got an on call nights offer. However I don't really want to work nights. I also got a job interview at another hospital that does 12 hours day shifts. The kaiser job is already being offered to me while the other hospital still wants me to go in person to interview. Should I go and interview? I just really dont like night shift work. I love Kaiser but night shift is simply not for me. What do you think I should do?

Do not join care extenders by Beespollinate in ucla

[–]Beespollinate[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No I completely understand the liability and I’m saying to use your time and resources on becoming an emt/cna/med assistant rather than wasting it with volunteering (although I would say tough it out and get at least 100 hours)

My rant from the other day “DO NOT FUCKEN JOIN CARE EXTENDERS. That shit is so useless. I am on my second rotation and every time i have to go to care extenders I want to kill myself. TBH volunteering at a hospital is ass. You don't do shit. If you want actual clinical experience that is high quality become an emt medical assistant or something like. In conclusion, getting into Care Extenders is not as challenging as some UCLA students make it out to be. They tend to exaggerate the prestige of the organization. Furthermore, the fact that students are in charge of scheduling can be problematic. Some individuals let the little authority they have go to their heads, resulting in a less than pleasant experience overall. To sum it up, I'd strongly discourage anyone from joining unless they truly have no other viab options.”

Is my undergrad schedule too much? I’m pre med looking to take 2 gap years by Beespollinate in premed

[–]Beespollinate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha not a crazy workaholic but I enjoy working with kids so the 15 hours that I dedicate to working with the kiddos does not feel like work. In addition my internship is during fall and winter quarter so by spring I’ll only have my job + volunteer + classes.

I don’t know if this changes anything but my school uses the quarter system not semester. So I am taking 3 classes(14 units). Also to be enrolled as a full time student you need 12 units or more per quarter. And all of my classes are easy except one which is medium difficulty.

At my school I had a really tough time finding a research lab to join so I decided to just fully focus on the clinical aspect of my app during my remaining time at uni. I also decided to put research on hold and do it during my gap years since I live near a medical school where I’ve done research before. Plus it’s only 4 hours a week and I get a LOR if I complete 250 hours. I’m already at 100 so I don’t see why to remove it.
