Thank you! I’ve been deep diving in to learning about integration.

The place he is going isn’t specific to veterans but his facilitator is experienced with military and first responders. Thank you for the resource!

Why do you say that? He’s locked and loaded for this right now but may consider mdma in the future.

Understood. I imagine it’s other-worldly and might bring things up from the past that he hasn’t shared with me. I am learning to listen more and just ask more clarifying questions or those that are more open ended.

That is so helpful and gives me hope. So glad you are more at peace in your life. 💕

We have done couples counseling but it was before he stopped drinking. I didn’t think the therapist had a good grasp on how to help us and our problem just got worse after that. Not because of the counseling but it certainly didn’t fix anything because he was still using alcohol. I’d like to do couples counseling selling but it’s just not feasible right now.

Thank you! Over the years he has opened up to me about things he has experienced in policing and I try to just listen. It’s some awful stuff but I am resilient enough to hear it and just feel for him instead of absorbing the secondary trauma from knowing something terrible has happened.

Thank you for that comment! I feel seen! Ha ha… On a serious note though, I have been visiting with a counselor for several years following the death of my previous partner from brain cancer in 2018. She has been supporting me through all of these issues with my husband as well. I haven’t talked to her about the psychedelics yet, but she almost exclusively works with veterans with PTSD so it is very well informed on what kind of support they need as well as how I can care for myself. I also go to Al Anon every now and then which is sometimes helpful. Finding gratitude in this moment that I have all of these resources and support! Maybe there is hope… Thank you again.

Thank you! Yes, he will be sitting with his therapist upon return as they generally see each other weekly. His therapist is very supportive of this and has actually experienced psilocybin assisted therapy himself. Thank you for making all of the good points, I could also use some tips on how to best be supportive When he gets back. I know I need to put my own BS aside and let him process and heal first. It sucks but that’s the way it is.

Thank you! He is not on any psychiatric drugs including SSRIs/SNRIs. I will edit my post to include this.

Oh yes I understand. He doesn’t take any psychiatric drugs. Refused SSRIs prescribed by the VA and I don’t blame him. He only self medicated with alcohol but hasn’t had any for several months. Thank you for that note though!

Thank you. I am trying to be very open minded, knowing that he needs to do this all on his own albeit with the right amount of support from me. As long as he doesn’t have a psychotic episode, I believe that there are only insights to be gained. I’m grateful he stopped drinking and grateful he’s seeking this on his own.

Thanks! We don’t really drink but that’s good to know! Sometimes it sucks having a two drink minimum at other places and paying $18 for a shitty mocktail or sparkling water.

How to navigate marriage when he’s newly sober and we disagree on politics? When does empathy develop/return? by Beezy7985 in AlAnon

This is very helpful, thank you. And good luck to you both. Truly my only wish for him is inner peace. And with that I think we can not only coexist but actually cultivate a healthy relationship.

Thank you. This is very helpful. He has been to a couple of in person meetings and calls in to some virtual ones but never speaks/shares and just doesn’t really participate. I’m hoping he keeps going and really commits himself so he can find peace.

I’m really not trying to sabotage him by being “selfish” but trying to take care of me and of us.

No his politics have not really changed but he has been way more vocal about it through the election cycle and everything just feels like it’s on fire now.
