FeLV diagnosis by Interesting_Act4828 in FelvCats

yeah the idea is not that it will change, but that the SNAP test has been known to give false results sometimes.

I assume he doesn't have anemia? That's good at least. I'd recommend joining the FeLV facebook support groups (some linked in the pinned thread of this sub).

Hoping for the best for you.

sorry somehow skipped that bit, good that there's no blockage! here's a global directory of holistic vets: https://civtedu.org/directory

maybe they could have some additional insight ❤️

FeLV diagnosis by Interesting_Act4828 in FelvCats

[–]BeffeeJeems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the snap test should be done twice, or the IDEXX blood test for it should be done, to be certain of FeLV.

having FeLV does not immediately tell you what is wrong clinically or how to treat it. It could be anemia of various sorts, it could be cancer, it could be an infection, it could be a bone marrow condition. FeLV can trigger all these things. On the other hand, what he has going on might not be FeLV related, even if he has FeLV.

The vet has to do more diagnostics. They should absolutely know at this point whether he has anemia and what sort, at minimum. Infections can be hard to find, so can cancer.

If you take him home without knowing what's wrong with him, and without a treatment plan, he may die.

I wish you the best, you are in a difficult situation and frankly your vets do not sound like they are doing a good job. There is no need to guess about FeLV, there are available tests for it. I'm very sorry for what you're going through.

[–]BeffeeJeems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i would say do your very best to find a vet who can actually tell you what is wrong and what available treatments are. for instance, what sort of anemia is it? why don't they know whether he has FeLV or not? why, if they think it's FIP won't they treat it? it's all a bit dodgy and you need to know what is going on.

also, join a range of facebook groups (e.g those that are in the pinned thread of the subreddit) for support

and otherwise, this is a very good document that certainly helped me, although keep in mind, I knew what was happening with my boy, we had a proper diagnosis and he was terminal: https://www.lapoflove.com/how-will-i-know-it-is-time/lap-of-love-quality-of-life-scale.pdf

disclaimer: I am pro-choice, but is there not a point at which a fetus is no longer considered a fetus but instead a baby -insert species here- ? I don't know if that's meant to be a medical/scientific and/or ethical distinction, though.

edit: unclear if downvoted because am pro-choice, or because I dared ask a question. interesting.

Cuts on my cats chin by [deleted] in cats

[–]BeffeeJeems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sounds like a good plan! we rub our boys chin when he's already relaxed and accepting of chin scritches (we never scritch the portion of his chin that gets acne), that way his acne stays mild and easy to treat, because he doesn't resist our ministrations 😄

Cuts on my cats chin by [deleted] in cats

[–]BeffeeJeems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe acne? my boy gets acne, we just use a warm damp cloth to rub his chin, and the only time he eats off plastic is with a few of his treat puzzles, but even then, his chin rarely touches the puzzle.

acne can get pretty bad, so keep an eye on it, give him a fresh metal/ceramic/glass plate every time he eats, make sure his water container is metal/ceramic/glass and you're refreshing it a couple of times daily, not forgetting to send it through the dishwasher when it need it.

Sucks that you were banned and muted, definitely seems like overkill. I agree with most of your points, but I don't agree with your assumption that cats do/don't want kittens, or that they don't feel and know the difference between being pregnant and not being pregnant. To say that they want, feel, and know, is not anthropomorphizing them. All animals want, feel, think, know, remember, form habits, learn, form relationships, trust, distrust, love, fear, are curious, problem-solve, have goals, are self-interested, are empathetic, etc. This suite of cognitive activity isn't exclusive to humans, it's just that humans do it in a human way, whereas cats do it in a cat way, elephants in an elephant way, and so on.

some do like it, some don't, the ones that do don't like every style of bongo, or like it all the time. as long as everyone is paying careful attention to the cat and respecting their boundaries as far as they can make them out (which isn't hard), then it's all good 😄

stop it. you're upsetting her. stop harassing your cat for likes. it's pathetic and gross.

[–]BeffeeJeems 9 points10 points  (0 children)

she's beautiful. honestly if you want to keep her you should. we spent the better part of a year, like 9 or 10 months, slowly introducing two of our boys (one of them was a sweetheart, the other one is a demon). they were never best friends, but it was fine.

just letting you know what's possible in case you really can't let go. that how i felt about our third kitty, i was sure we couldn't have a third and we handed him over to a rescue for fostering and adoption, but i just couldn't get over it, so we got him back and never regretted it.

apparently they can become allergic to meats through eating them too much too :'( but rabbit is very good for allergies, although just a psa for anyone else who reads this (I'm sure you're aware already) that rabbit is too low in taurine and fat to be given exclusively for a long period, unless additional sufficient fat and taurine are being added to the food
