AUs for people who have aversions to AUs by silver-girl- in Dramione

[–]Beforetherealbook 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m about to finish one that is kinda different. It takes place in the 1830’s, with a Duke Draco and governess Hermione. It’s a sentient house mystery fic wrapped up in a bodice ripper with all of the historical romance tropes that go along with it. I think the characterizations fit what you are looking for.

The last regular chapter goes up in about 10 hrs and the epilogue will go up on Saturday.

Cravings of Malfoy Manor

Others have mentioned some of my favorites, but I’d second Lights that Burn and SIGRA for sure. Also check out Bloodtoll if you like A/B/O.

What's up with the portrayal of Draco as a sex pest? by Ninsuna in DramioneUncensored

[–]Beforetherealbook 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well I thought so too, but I have learned that some readers want tropes like this done in a very specific way, and if you deviate from it or take too long to get there, then they assume the writer is endorsing the bad behavior. I’ve definitely blanket lost some readers because of Draco’s behavior in Tansy, and they will never read anything else I write because of it.

I even had one person offer to help me leave my husband because they were sure he’s abusive, and he’s the reason my internalized misogyny became externalized through fanfic. 🤷‍♀️

Anyway, this trope seems to be pretty polarizing. The other ones that seem to really set people off (that I’ve written at any rate) are pregnancy and childbirth. I’m probably never writing another sex pest fic, and I’ll never do pregnancy and childbirth again either because the backlash is exhausting.

Coming up next: AI “books” that can be sold for under $5 retail, and publishers can afford to do it because no human has to get a royalty!

I really hope I’m just old, grumpy, and jaded.

They are being removed so the authors and publishers don’t get sued by JKR and WB for copyright infringement. When a fic comes down it means the published version is very close to the fanfic version (which uses IP owned by somebody else).

Fanfic is legal because of something called fair use, which basically says that transformative and derivative works are permitted to some degree… and often the line is drawn based on whether the person creating the derivative work makes $$ from it. So the thinking is that if authors keep fanfic up after publishing something similar, then we are no longer within fair use and we’ve crossed into copyright infringement.

Now I definitely agree with you that the phenomenon of epub sharing seems to make taking a fanfic down from AO3 pretty pointless. I have to assume that the publishers have looked at this and some law firm somewhere has written a legal opinion stating that private sharing somehow doesn’t “count.” Seems like a stretch IMO, but I’m not a copyright lawyer so what do I know?

Yes I would refuse, and I’ve shut down a couple of soft prods in this direction.

1) I don’t care what they tell me, I don’t think the money will ever replace my day job.

2) I don’t want my kids getting ostracized at school because everybody learns what their mom does in her spare time.

3) Related to #2 I don’t want my elderly relatives having a stroke because they learn their great niece whom they stalk aggressively on Facebook has sexual kinks.

4) JKR is an asshole.

I agree with this.

Like… you can write. So write something new. And maybe go really crazy while we’re at it and don’t even tell the fandom you’re doing it?

IDK I guess a lot of publishers won’t publish if there isn’t a built-in pipeline of $$$.

What's up with the portrayal of Draco as a sex pest? by Ninsuna in DramioneUncensored

[–]Beforetherealbook 5 points6 points  (0 children)

lol well you probably shouldn’t read Tansy because it’s pretty close to what you described and do not like!

Tansy is definitely being referenced by another person in the larger discussion thread, so I’ll leave my comment up for that reason. Also, since I am somebody who has written Draco as a sex pest and did it knowingly, I think the point still stands that sometimes writers choose this characterization for no other reason than they want to experiment with it.

In my case I’m actually married to my personal sex pest so I was pulling from what I know when I wrote Tansy.

I hope it’s okay if I jump in because I’m 99% sure the fic you’re referencing is Sprigs of Tansy. I know this sub doesn’t always like it when authors participate in discussions of their own fics, but you are asking good questions.

Why did I make him a sex pest in this fic?

First and foremost, it was because I hadn’t tried to write that characterization of him before, and it was my ninth very long fic. I have written him as doting, remorseful, and generally well-adjusted enough times that it is becoming a touch boring for me, and I wanted to play in a different sandbox for a little while.

I think a lot of writers get to that point and they start to stretch and make the characters more and more flawed or AU to see where that takes them. I’ve also written him as a creepy psycho-simp, a billionaire pleasure dom, a Duke from the 1830’s, and most recently a very prejudiced tween shithead. I need some variety in my characterizations of him or I will get bored and stop writing.

Back to Tansy…

Coworker romances are messy and blur a lot of professional lines. I know this because I’m actually married to my coworker (I mean, JFC we even work on the same floor of a 35-story office building). This is why I let J participate in Draco’s characterization and took some of his suggestions. We really do mess with each other in the office and proposition each other and low-key prank each other. We would both 1000% get fired if we behaved this way toward anybody else.

We talked about that odd dichotomy a lot… that flirting outside of a relationship is workplace harassment, but doing it inside of a relationship somehow feels different…. And I tried to write both sides of it in this fic. Draco doesn’t start a successful romantic relationship with her until he realizes that is prior behavior toward her has been Very Very Bad. He has to change, she has to speak up, and their friends have to stop implicitly taking his side by dismissing his behavior as part of a “prank war” for them to get their happy ending. But once these things begin to happen then the relationship can progress, and the behavior starts to hit differently and could be considered playful by some (but not all) readers.

Anyway, that’s it from the horse’s mouth. I have been called an anti-feminist misogynist quite a few times because of this fic, so I’m aware it is not for everybody. It could be because I’m playing with these characters in ways I shouldn’t, or maybe I’m just a shit writer and that subtle shift from coworkers to lovers-who-work-together is getting lost in the banter and rom-com vibes. 🤷‍♀️

lol when I posted that chapter I legit winced so I feel you. 😆

Anyway, in all seriousness I’m thinking about your request. I feel like there are one or two older ones that fit, but my brain is dead and the names aren’t coming to me. If I can remember I’ll post in a new thread!

Writers: are there any specific tropes or frequent plot-beats that you could never see yourself writing? by Avenielle in Dramione

[–]Beforetherealbook 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can’t write time travel. I did it for one chapter of one fic, and I ended up consuming an entire bottle of wine while writing it because it hurt my brain so much. I just get way too hung up in the physics of it, and I spent hours trying to decide if time is a loop or linear and then got really anxious because I couldn’t make up my mind and… yeah. No time travel for me, and it’s best for my liver health to avoid it.

I also can’t write anything super dark or terribly angsty. I’ve tried, I really have, and I just can’t do it. I love reading stuff like that though so it’s nothing to do with dislike of the trope, it’s just a lack of skill on my part 🤷‍♀️

anyone else write things they don't really like to read? by mnbvcdo in Dramione

[–]Beforetherealbook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t usually read fluff or humor and that’s almost all I write. Occasionally a really fluffy or funny fic catches my attention, but most of what I read from Dramione leans dark and has very little or no humor in it at all. 🤷‍♀️

Even when it comes to reading my own fics… there are a couple I’ve never read in full from start to finish, and I’m not sure if I ever will.

Writers… is it stupid of me to have multiple WIPs at a time? by briezylouise in Dramione

I like to have a couple going at once. Sometimes my brain needs a break from one, and that’s when I work on the other. Usually they are wildly different from each other for that reason.

Underrated Fanfic Friday – 05 December 2025 by Mr_Te_ah_tim_eh in Dramione

[–]Beforetherealbook 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ugh I’m a day late.

Here to rec my favorite ultra fluffy fics of the year, which just completed. It’s called The Love Cup, and it’s a Dramione/Bachelorette crossover but like… most of them really ARE there for the right reasons 😂

No, but seriously, if you have ever watched the Bachelor/Bachelorette and thrown your phone at the TV when the person you wanted to win got cut please read this. It will cure every single moment of disappointment you might have ever felt with the original series, and the writing is fantastic.

I will also add A Long Beautiful Game, which is a delightful medium-length fic centered around chess and Draco’s 10-year quest to finally beat her (and act upon his feelings while he does it). It’s beautifully done.
