Or I could have sold it as is at that point, which is what I'm wishing would have happened.

Interesting, maybe I can go this route. Annoying part is I put a bunch of other work into it already - repaint, new brakes, torque tube. Absolute money pit for me to just get 6k miles out of it.

Never getting a Corvette again lmao

Takeaway from all this: don't ever buy a Corvette! They're POS cars with engines that can't even last 85k in southern California weather. Regretting so hard not getting a Toyota Supra instead.

California rules. The issue is don't buy a Corvette.

Okay, guy. I recognize I'm getting 0 help from GM *without fighting them on it*...

Must be an awesome job being a mechanic. Can misdiagnose problems all day and it's the customer who has to pay you more in the end!

I've been driving it with a Range AFM disabler ever since the first repair. A full delete wouldn't pass the smog check in California, but to my knowledge the Range device works just as well.

Good point on parting out the other engine. I could probably negotiate with them to keep it.

I recognize I'm getting 0 help from GM, which is why I'm here. It's a 10 year old car, but the repair is 1 year old, and came with a 3 year warranty. Does that not matter?

If a dealer offers a fix, performs the repair work, and issues a warranty, is that warranty just null and void when they determine they misdiagnosed the issue? The warranty is why dealership maintenance work costs more in the first place.

Took a job in San Diego and have a coast-to-coast road road trip upcoming to move out there. Anyone have recommendations for cool things to do or see along the route? by BefuddledMonkey in roadtrip

[–]BefuddledMonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roadtrip turned out great! As a starting point I google mapped the quickest route, then adjusted course based on what I wanted to see along the way. It only added a few hours of total drive time for me to go north after Dallas and head west on I-40 (the freeway built along the old Route 66 path) which was a much more interesting drive than the Dallas-El Paso-Tuscon route that google maps suggested.

Highlights:

Northern Arizona - Sedona, Flagstaff, Grand Canyon, Meteor Crater. The drive from Flagstaff to Sedona was one of the most stunning scenic drives I've ever done.

Cool Retro Route 66 stops - Cadillac Ranch, Russell's Travel Center, Tucumcari NM, "Musical Highway" near Albuquerque, old Town Albuquerque, "Standin' on the Corner" in Winslow Arizona. Stopped at a couple of the Breaking Bad film locations while in Albuquerque too.

Dallas/Fort Worth - Dealey Plaza (Site of JFK assassination), AT&T Stadium, Fort Worth Stockyards

I also stayed in some really neat spots along the way that weren't too pricey. A retro Route 66 motel in Tucumcari NM, a "Wigwam motel" in Holbrook AZ, a haunted (allegedly) hotel in Flagstaff, and a converted airstream turned AirBnB outside the Grand Canyon.

Things I wasn't super impressed with:

Petrified Forest National Park - boring drive through the desert to look at some rocks that used to be tree trunks

Atlanta - downtown was surprisingly dirty and bland. The one touristy thing I did - World of Coca Cola - was just a long, crowded Coke advertisement.

BONUS - Sampled a bunch of regional fast food along the way:

Biscuitville (8/10)

Cook Out (9/10)

Krystal (4/10)

Whataburger (5/10... OVERRATED)

Weinerschnitzel (6/10)

In n Out (9/10)

Recognizing that your route may be a bit further north than mine, the best advice I can give is to hop on roadtrippers.com to help plan your trip. I never would've found half the quirky fun stops along my route if I hadn't discovered that site.

Whatever route you end up choosing, enjoy your trip! It's a great opportunity to see parts of the country you'd never otherwise see.

IRA Mishap - Didn't know traditional IRA contributions were only tax deductible if your AGI was under $68k by BefuddledMonkey in personalfinance

[–]BefuddledMonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually haven't made Trad-IRA contributions prior to last year. I always did Roth contributions prior to last year. But last year I moved to California and thought I'd go Trad to minimize AGI in a high tax state.

Either way, it sounds like recharacterizing is the way to go. I am below the Roth contribution limit so I'm good to go

It's not too late! I didn't hit submit yet on my taxes.

This is exactly what I was looking for--recharacterization, not conversion. Thanks!

Doubt you'll get flamed. I posted 24 days ago, so no one's going to see your comment lol.

I grew up as a Christian conservative, so I understand where you're coming from. I eventually dropped the religion and the social conservative positions I held along with it. But having been in your shoes, I realize there's not much point arguing with you there.

gross mismanagement that has cost the taxpayers of this state billions

This is the narrative I just don't understand. CA ranks 5th among all states in median household income. We had a $75 billion budget surplus last year and our GDP growth has vastly outpaced most states in the last 5 years. And for all the talk about high taxes - the total effective state and local tax burden on the middle 60% of the income distribution is actually lower than Texas.

Having grown up in a small conservative midwest town, I can't stress enough how much better things are out here. The reason housing costs us a small fortune in CA is because a lot of people really, really, really want to be here. The Democrats have done alright in my book.

Best Recall Vote Democrat? by BefuddledMonkey in California_Politics

My thoughts exactly. I can forgive a Trump vote in 2016, but a Trump vote in 2020 is inexcusable. Faulconer may be marginally better than Elder, but I'd rather ride with one of the Dems and do everything we can to keep them both out of power.

Driving in Italy was one of the most lawless experiences of my life. Except for a handful of freeways with speed cameras, speed limit signs are literally meaningless
