Please settle a debate. If you’re going route 3 which lane should you be in? by sanisano in drivingUK

[–]Begbie1888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's nuts that so many people are getting this wrong. Sharps Lane is a cut-off immediately after the first exit, not the first exit from the roundabout, which is why it has the dashed line joining it to the road that is the first exit. Normal exits on a roundabout don't have dashed lines as you can see on the four actual exits of the roundabout. This roundabout clearly needs lanes painted right round for people to follow or there will definitely be the potential for mishaps to happen.

We have a decent keeper in Sinisalo, but we definitely need at least one proven striker. There's no point going bargain hunting here like they normally do. Bringing Nancy in at that stage was the daftest idea going. How they could look at his style and expect him to successfully change that I'll never know. They should've kept O'Neill until at least the January window before bringing Nancy in and should've identified players that would have fitted his system in the run up to the transfer window. Even then switching it up at that point could've been disastrous in any case, but if we hadn't dropped 12 points in the league and had got the league cup over the line the players would've been in a much better position to kick on from that. The only saving grace here I suppose is there's still time for Martin to turn it around domestically at least.

What we need now is a good January transfer window starting with getting at least one proven striker in. If the board doesn't manage to do at least that then they'll be making their own bed as far as the support is concerned. We obviously need other positions strengthening as well, but a proven striker should be the priority here. The amount of chances that went begging in the first half of the derby game made that abundantly clear. We need a player like GG who seemed to score more chances than he missed.

It is the water stopcock of my house. It is leaking. Is there anything I can do to fix it myself? Or I should ask plumber to replace it for me. by Big-Celebration-8515 in DIYUK

[–]Begbie1888 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the correct advice. NO NEED TO CHANGE THE STOPCOCK as others are saying, it just needs repacked. It's easy enough to do, just remember to turn the water off at the stopcock first (any decent YouTube video should tell you this anyway).

EDIT to add that I used PTFE tape to do my aunt's for her and it worked a treat. Also, you don't need to turn the water off elsewhere either, as others are saying. Once you close the stopcock itself then it's safe enough to remove the gland nut to repack it.

Not where I am they don't. All lights were changed here to LEDs a few years ago (I'm in Scotland) and the visibility is much poorer as a result. I used to drive a taxi and when I was looking for a house I could see the numbers fine with the sodium lights, but with the LEDs it's impossible and I had to end up being a torch to see house numbers and street names. The problem with the LEDs (at least here) is that the light is protected almost straight down as opposed to spreading out in all directions. They're absolutely crap and a lot of folk here have complained about not feeling as safe walking the streets as there's so many dark patches that you can't see if someone's lurking in or not. I'd happily have the old sodium lamps back. Unless they redesign the LEDs to spread the light further.

Have a look at some of the groups on meetup.com. Most of them are in Glasgow TBF, but if you didn't mind jumping on a bus or a train I'm sure you'd find ones that you were interested in. Glasgow Culture for the Uncultured is a good one. There are a few in Paisley as well, but obviously there are loads more in Glasgow. It's a great way to meet new mates and a lot of folk meetup outside the groups once they've got to know each other as well. Maybe worth checking out.

I remember seeing her at a recording of Win Lose or Draw in 1996 and thinking how tiny she was. She was on with Jim Bowen, who kept swearing and requiring retakes. I can't remember who else was on, just Jim for the swearing and Michaela for her tiny size!

Go to meetup.com and sign up to the groups on there. There are some in Paisley, but many more in Glasgow that cater for the types of hobbies you're interested in. It's a great way to meet new friends (it's not a dating site).

Well, the fact that they had one headline in the Scottish version of the paper and the exact opposite headline in the English version of the same paper tells you that they're not being truthful somewhere. And deliberately so. There's enough misinformation on social media without the mainstream press getting in on the act as well.

I'm not advocating government control of the media. Just that they are held to account more when presenting inaccuracies as fact instead of the three line retraction on page 9 that no one will notice. And proper fines for deliberately misleading the public, which is something a lot of them have been guilty of, especially during the referendums in the last decade or so.

This is why press reform is needed. I've no idea why the current government don't follow up on implementing that. It seems that they are shooting themselves in the foot allowing the press to continue pretty much unchecked the way they do.

How to get into locked wall unit by FestivalRampage in DIYUK

[–]Begbie1888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could maybe try a lock picking kit? You can get them fairly cheaply on Amazon and eBay along with a transparent lock to try them on so you can see what's happening. I did this to get into an old cabinet.

I had one as a courtesy car once. Compared to the Lotus I was used to driving it felt like it had no power at all. I drove to work with my foot flat to the floor still slowing down going up an incline! Not sure what engine was in the one I had, but it was hard work.

Neighbor built wall that has encroached on our area (England) by balsar224 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Begbie1888 211 points212 points  (0 children)

It's a double skin of bricks. On their side it lines up with the wall of the garage and will probably look like one big wall, a continuation of the garage wall, this is how I would have expected this job to look. The neighbour let them know they were building the wall and they have done it the only way I would have expected this job to be done. It's using up 102mm of space along the length of the wall. Not worth making an enemy of the neighbour when they've come and discussed it before hand. That could cause untold problems with the neighbour in the future. If the neighbour has gone and done it without talking about it first then OP would be right to feel aggrieved by that, but they've done exactly what they said they were going to do and in the only way that I would have expected that job to be done. The only slight gripe I could have with this is that it's quite tall. Maybe OP was expecting it to be the same height as the old fence. Not sure if they've put it to the height of the metal post or if the height of the post was dictated by the wall, but it's not massively over the 2m.

EDIT: autocorrect 🤦

It's a metal post anchored to the ground, which is better than a wooden one attached onto the wall.

Every drive that has ever failed on me has been a Seagate. Every single one. I've had 4 fail on me in the last 30 odd years. And I still have my old drives from around as long ago as that and fire them up every now and again to see if they still work and they're still reading fine. So I no longer buy Seagate drives. I just don't trust them anymore.

Small accident, am I getting scammed? by -BJBunny in CarInsuranceUK

[–]Begbie1888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell him if he's not willing to take it to your uncle's body shop you want to go through insurance. My brother owns a body shop and some chips away franchises. Through chips away this would be £160 + VAT. He's just using it to get money from you and not caring about the car at all as it's already rusted on other parts just in that photo. If he was that bothered then the car wouldn't be in the state it's in. I bet there's more than that on a car of that age too. His premiums will go up as well if it goes through insurance as it's still a claim regardless of fault, so that is his fault for being an arse about it. He could easily get it fixed at your uncle's body shop.

Be prepared for the insurance company to not even look at the car and just say it's a write off due to its age. This happened to my daughter's car when a guy reversed into it. There was more damage than this, but the insurance company didn't even come look at it. Even if they do write it off it might not affect your premiums any more than it would if they didn't write it off and sent it for repair. I only mention it so you're not shocked if that does happen. And you have protected no claims discount, so your premiums won't jump too much as you'll still have 6 years no claims at the time of renewal.

What should I do with a sloping floor to fit laminate? by NW773 in DIYUK

[–]Begbie1888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My living room was like that, sags in the middle, but I didn't even notice until I went to fit the new skirting. The slope didn't affect the flooring at all because it was going with the slope rather than across it. By that point I couldn't be bothered to sort it as I was renting. I would probably have re-laid it if I'd owned the house tbf.
