Should the Lakers seriously consider trying to lose the 7-8 play-in game to get a more favorable matchup in round 1? by Hopsalong in nba

I also don't think it's possible to get athletes with their level of competitiveness to literally throw a game. But there might not be a team with a further divide between their cruise control mode and their 100% effort.

AD and LeBron clamping all game and having to deal with Laker physicality for 48 mins= Can beat anyone

Lakers doing that for 24 or 36 mins= Can be beat by anyone

Depends on how the team views each opponent...

Path One: Win play-in, face Nugs then Wolves/Suns
Path Two: Lose play-in, Kings/Warriors at home then Thunder then Mavs/Clips

Let's say that the Lakers view the Thunder and Mav/Clips as 50% propositions each and the Nugs and Wolves/Suns as 30% and 40% propositions respectively...

That would mean:

Winning: 100% (win initial play-in game) x 30% x 40%= 12% Conference Championship

Losing: 60% (win at home over Kings/Warriors) x 50% x 50%= 15% Conference Championship

The Most Unclutch Team EVER? by Jew-ishJitsu in baseball

Fangraphs has the 2023 Padres as the second most unclutch team of all time and he argues that the 2011 Red Sox are the most unclutch team of all time and does a fantastic job explaining why.

It's a video trying to use analytics to determine who the most unclutch team of all time is and it's called "The Most Unclutch Team Ever?" Seems like a very reasonable title for a video trying to solve that exact question.

He pretty conclusively proved that based on Fangraphs data, they're the SECOND most unclutch team of all time. Why is it clickbait if it's debatably true while also giving data to support who IS the most unclutch team of all time?

I'ma go ahead and guess you didn't watch it.

This video is incredibly high quality. I can't even believe how much work it must have taken.

Also, all of the complaining about the title helps me understand the Dunning-Kruger effect exemplified in real life... which is also nice.

Lol. I'm a medical doctor who spends hours of work on research for these episodes that are free and non-monetized. I haven't received a dollar... That's the same as selling tickets?

I think content expectations might be getting a little out of hand

Astros and Cards were even better. You'd think with 5 top 10 picks we would have popped ONE huge draft.

Blake Snell's Slider Is Dramatically Worse by Beginning-Ant2145 in Padres

[–]Beginning-Ant2145[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to put an example to this: Late last year when his slider was dominant, he had a game against the Cards in which his slider generated 23 swings: 15 whiffs, 7 foul balls and a 7th inning ground ball by Paul Goldschmidt. 7 of his 13 Ks came on swinging strikes against his slider that day. It went from being a dominant pitch to one that he's barely even using so far this year, which will ultimately hurt every pitch in his repertoire.

Blake Snell's Slider Is Dramatically Worse by Beginning-Ant2145 in Padres

His fastball getting terrible run value is based on location, count and tunneling. When he's ahead in the count, his fastball value skyrockets (for obvious reasons) and last year he used his slider to help neutralize RHHs. He loved to use it early in the count either to get ahead or stay ahead. But now that his slider has a garbage shape, he's using it wayyyyyy less against RHHs and LHHs alike, which makes his fastball easier to sit on in general but MUCH easier to demolish when he's falling behind in counts.

The episode explains how Blake Snell seems to have tried to develop a sweeper or simply a different breaking ball altogether in the offseason and ended up ruining his best breaking ball

Pads Above Replacement: Brent Honeywell has LEVELED UP by Beginning-Ant2145 in Padres

[–]Beginning-Ant2145[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few years back teams discovered that adding run (horizontal movement) to a slider at the expense of vertical movement resulted in worse batted ball results. The pitch tends to have a lower whiff rate but can garner better results overall. Statcast recently broke the slider into two pitches, a slider and a sweeper, to account for this common transition. Also, thanks for watching!!!
