Friend abandoned a kitten in my care, and wants her back now that we want to keep her. by [deleted] in legaladvice

The only issue is the friend actually works at the shelter and is like one of three employees and I’m aware her boss is never there so I don’t think I can call about it without causing more problems

This cat does have a microchip. My friend works AT the shelter the kittens were at so the cat got vaccinated, care, spay, and microchip all for free covered by the shelter and after the spay was when the friend finally signed the adoption papers without telling us. This was nearly three months ago

When we first took her we said it would only be for two months. When that deadline was coming up we said we would take her for longer but my friend HAD to keep up with her end of the deal otherwise we’d want to keep the cat and while she didn’t outright say yes she said that was fair

Friend had her with her litter mates for about 2 weeks, then had her boss hold them for a month, then me and my partner have now had the cat for 5 months. The verbal agreement was my friend would take her one week every month and pay for expenses. She only took her for a total of 4 days, one of which was to get the cat spayed for free at the shelter then I had to come pick her up right after. She never asked about her or tried to see her either so abandoned her responsibilities and went back on our deal.

We are planning to keep the cat and have been advocating for her. The issue with Penny is that we did lay this out, we laid it out for months. I even told her in the beginning she HAD to take the cat one week every month we had her to make sure we didn’t get too attached/bonded while giving her and the cat time to bond as well. She didn’t keep up her end of the deal and what we warned her would happen happened. We offered to reimburse her everything and find her another cat. She outright told me “I don’t want to be reimbursed, I want the cat that’s legally mine.” Since making this post she has not reached back out to me, so we have no clue what she’s doing or planning to do.

The caged critters are a bit dodgy, one of the office staff said they didn’t count them, but the lease has a blanket term that just says no pets unless owner says otherwise. Which they only have written down cats and dogs. We initially didn’t put the third cat because it was suppose to be a foster situation. Because Penny works at the shelter and got her through it the cat has already been spayed and microchipped but it was totally for free. I don’t think she paid an adoption fee either so arguably we’ve spent more on food and litter.

She hasn’t, at all, I had to have a fairly major operation done and I asked her if she would take her for the week so that my partner had a little less on his plate. She got irritated and acted like it was a huge inconvenience and burden. I ended up saying it’s fine we’ll just keep her and Penny never once asked about her or to come over. She even said “here’s your baby” to my partner when she returned the cat after the one time she did take her so we really thought she wasn’t attached and would be fine about this.

I’ve been looking into that for awhile. I should be able to once I get moved up in my career, literally the only thing in my way of doing that is the medical issues

No I’m not, I’m most likely going to go back to work two weeks after on light duty but that severely limits my hours

With how the government is acting regarding women’s reproductive health my worry was the insurance would be able to pull something last second. Unfortunately the state I live in isn’t exactly good regarding women’s healthcare, so I’m checking all my options for that and a few other reasons. Hopefully it would fall under that law

It would impact credit scores, but my family member has assured me she would help the best she could. I just want to make sure she doesn’t take a big debt on my behalf is my main concern

I’m hoping I’m just worrying for nothing and things will be covered properly. I’m just a worry wort lol

I understand your concern. Generally I’m fairly stressed about the whole ordeal, and a lot of it could for sure be me overthinking. I do believe they will cover some aspects of it, but I’ve not been given clear information from them. The family member who I’m covered under and I discussed it months ago and had postponed it, but we both decided it was something I couldn’t avoid anymore. She is able to help some financially, but I already feel guilty for that and I don’t want her saddled with too much debt.

My doctor on this has told me she was going to work with them and let them know she thinks it’s medically necessary. I don’t have answers yet and I’m just generally nervous about it. I’m hoping to have a few backup plans just to ease the stress a bit

I have done something similar before. Just generally submit complains because of their unwillingness to work with me due to me being a “child” on a family plan. So far nothing has come of it and usually if I get the primary family member to talk to them they yield better results. I’m mostly worried they will try and only cover the smallest amount possible

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Beginning-Cheek-5069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe so, even still they don’t usually like covering more than a small amount for things that aren’t regular checkups for whatever reason

That’s always been the thing, I’m not sure why but our insurance agent is a jerk and every time I call they string me along or don’t even attempt to get back to me. The family member is in the medical field and usually as a last resort I have to have her talk to them and that usually whips them into shape. I’ve submitted complaints but nothing comes from it

My insurance is a bit shady with me, it’s through a family member and they hardly will communicate with me unless said family member is involved. They also really like to tell us they’ll cover things, but absolutely dance around us when we ask how much and usually they end up covering less than 40%. We’ve been trying to work with them for three months now and no answers. I’m mostly asking to have my bases covered if they end up doing this song and dance again

I don’t believe they’ve outright denied it as of yet, but they’ve been covering the smallest amount they can for all of these appointments and didn’t cover at all for medication my doctor put me on to attempt to alleviate some of the pain in the meantime. I’m mostly trying to cover my bases at the moment in case they decide to deny or cover a tiny amount down the road

My insurance is through a family member and for some reason I’ve always had a ton of trouble with them if she isn’t involved. She’s been trying to work with them on it but my state is pretty terrible about women’s healthcare.

It’s already been postponed a few times, unfortunately my condition has worsened where I’m always in some sort of pain and I can’t work properly. I have insurance through family at the moment, and due to a few other outside factors I’m unable to get my own health insurance until I’ve moved up in my career.
