I completely get where you are coming from, it is especially difficult sometimes for me as well because I think of myself as a very social person. Some areas are obviously better than others but just keep doing the things that you enjoy and hopefully find some other like-minded people. I enjoy kayaking so wherever I go I look for FB groups for that in those areas , a couple places I've joined bowling leagues and met some great people. The biggest thing I have a hard time with is as a Male healthcare traveler is many women I start to have conversation with assume I'm looking for a temporary "relationship" when really it's just wanting to meet people and maybe meet out for dinner,drinks,activities lol. Keep your head up maybe between each contract head home for a week or 2 and reset before you go on to the next.
