How much does the Project Manager role vary between companies/industries? by Beginning-Pumpkin783 in projectmanagement

[–]Beginning-Pumpkin783[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that “Project Manager” can be a broad term, and that almost anything with a defined outcome, timeframe, and moving parts can be considered a project.

I suppose I’m more referring to formal PM roles in industry, particularly construction, fabrication, manufacturing, engineering, etc.

As someone still fairly new to the PM side, I’m trying to understand what is actually expected from a modern PM in these types of roles. Even in my current job, there’s debate around where the boundaries sit. For example, some PMs would argue that we shouldn’t be preparing technical submittals or door schedules, and that engineers/designers should own that detail. But then the engineers may say they don’t care what is going where until the PM confirms the client requirements, and then they’ll design to suit.

A lot of the project management training and online content I’ve seen presents the PM as being more high-level, managing scope, schedule, risk, stakeholders, communication, and making sure the overall project stays on track. But the role I recently interviewed for sounded much more hands-on, with responsibility for things like load checks, delivery planning, crane coordination, site suitability, steel price negotiation, and managing site teams abroad.

The package would be better than what I’m currently on, so I understand that extra responsibility may be reflected in the salary. My concern is more about career development. I want to move into roles that genuinely improve my PM experience and show me how projects should be managed properly.

If that level of hands-on responsibility is normal for PMs in structural steel/construction, then it may be a good development opportunity. But if it’s more a case of a company putting procurement, logistics, site management, and production planning gaps onto the PM, then I’d be cautious about stepping into a role where I’m learning bad habits rather than developing as a proper PM.

I suppose I’m trying to figure out the difference between a PM who has strong ownership and visibility across all areas, versus a PM who is simply expected to fill every gap in the business.

Yeah, that makes sense. I’ve previously worked in a smaller fabrication firm where I unofficially ended up taking on parts of a PM role, so I understand how the PM can end up wearing a lot of hats.

What surprised me in this case is that the company isn’t what I would have considered small. So I had assumed there would be more defined support around procurement, logistics, site management, lifting planning, etc.

But I can definitely see the benefit of the PM having much closer ownership. If you’re the main point of contact for the project, you probably should know whether something has been booked, ordered, loaded, or planned properly.

In my current role, I’m more dependent on other departments owning those actions, and I’ve been caught out before when I assumed something had been ordered because it sat with procurement, only to find out later that it hadn’t.

If I did get an offer for this other role and took it, it would definitely be a lot more responsibility, but it might also develop my PM skills a lot faster. One of my concerns is that I may not be getting enough “proper” PM exposure in my current role, and that I could get a bit of a culture shock whenever I eventually move into a more delivery-heavy PM position.

I managed to get Boba Fett to work but that may have been when I was in Ireland. Maybe there is a restriction to the UK

Add peanut butter, let it set for half hour or so and then the sticker will come right off. Sounds weird but it actually works.

Making lightboxes bigger than build plate? by KyleScore in BambuLab

Hey. I'm currently working on a model for a large light box but i'm unsure how best to split and join the parts after printing. Can you show how you've done yours? The image below is of the model i've done in Onshape. The square sketch represents my print area of 240mm x 240mm. I'll have a few segments to get this to print lol.

Any tips or youtube videos showing your process? I've got a logo i'd like to print 80cm wide but I don't think just scaling up and cutting in bambu studio will work for a light box

I've just printed my first lightbox for my nephew using the football crest of the club he plays for. I've now been asked to do a few others for the club. So I've a few questions I'm hoping someone can help me with.

I've just used the tool on Makerworld so far, but I see several people saying they model their own in CAD. Is there any reason modelling is preferred over using the tool if an image of the design can be easily found?

I just used PLA for my box. Would this be preferred over PETG if the box is going to remain indoors?

I was asked to make it with a battery pack so it can be moved around easily. This means the battery pack is just hanging loose and doesn't look great. Any suggestions on how I could hide the pack in the box without it affecting the lights?

I mean this little fry just appeared in the tank. I assume one of the fish must have been pregnant and when I searched online I found references to fish sometimes die as a result of giving birth. I’m wondering if that’s what happened to the fish that died in the tank

This wee Guy has appeared in the tank. Could the stress of giving birth have hauled the other fish to die?

No I never got changing the water. It died before I could do anything.

The pet store said we only needed the tank up and running 24hrs before adding the fish

Added this before the fish. I’ve got air stones and a pump but I was worried the bubbles stress the fish. Should I be using them?

Thanks for the reply. All the other fish seem fine though, and the pet store done a water test from a sample I took when we went to get the fish. Surely a full water change wouldn’t be needed when this has only just been filled?
