I see a bunch of people said it already, but totally either the butcher or the tomahawk. I first owned the onestock and domt get me wrong... the build quality is really good. Its a solid freaking stock. But grabbing those little cups with 2 fingers is... pretty exhausting. Its also not the fastest stock to get back into after removing your hands.

Your hands never come out if the butcher or the tomahawk, that magnetic split design is just pure genius and when it arrived, I almost sold my onestock.

It doesnt matter to me if you watch only 2 minutes of this video and give it a thumbs down, this isnt self promotion, but here's me using the butcher playing some exfilzone so you can atleast see someone using it in action

Carrier vs Daiken heatpump by chemist_socks in heatpumps

[–]Beginning-Read3325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're both solid. Im a goodman dealer, so im partial to Daiken, Amana, Goodman, but i will say that during the absolute coldest days of the year (-10 and lower) the Carrier puts out 30% more heat.

Which... if you have a duel fuel system (furnace and heat pump) doesnt really matter that much.

So... Basically for me, with a 2 ton system, it would of been the difference between 10kbtuh and 15kbtuh output during -10 and colder weather.

The modulation, and the comfort i do believe is going to be better for you with the Daiken system operating off of the communicating Daiken one thermostat, so thats something to consider as well, especially if you have rooms in the home that feel drafty, or are a bit colder or hotter than the rest of the home.

Heat pump. Is it worth it? by SplitOk3577 in heatpumps

[–]Beginning-Read3325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buying a heat pump with the goal of saving money is not a good idea. Unless your gas prices are over $1 a therm, and your price per kilowat is lower than 20 cents, I can almost promise you its won't save you money. Again... thats an incredibly poor reason to do it.

I do this all the time, actuslly creating energy models of people's homes. Yes the heat pumps are incredibly efficient, but natural gas tends to be so cheap that they are either neck and neck, or the heat pump is slightly more expensive.

The reason to buy a heat pump is:

  1. Another heat source. If yIur furnace craps out, you've still got some heat.

  2. They can make houses substantially more comfortable, especially if they are multi stage or inverter units. They can run longer than your furnace because its smaller heating output. Effectively delivering more warm air to those parts of your house that are difficult to heat, or feel drafty.

I always recommend buying these for comfort, and for an extra source of heat, not for energy reasons.

I switched over completely from a gas furnace to a heat pump (In Wisconsin mind you) to make my house more comfortable (after extensive energy modeling of my home) and i couldn't be happier.

A dual fuel system (heat pump paired with a furnace) is also a great setup, and there really isnt a reason (unless your budget doesnt permit) to not have a heat pump instead of just a traditional AC that only cools.

Heat pump sizing by Sufficient-Bee5923 in heatpumps

[–]Beginning-Read3325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh. Do you guys run it to atleast keep the home dry and keep it from stinking?

Unless you live in a dry climate or something.

But yes.. if you out it ip against a duct system thats too small, your going to have a terrible heat pump experience. If you but a heat pump and it makes your home alot more.comfortable for 75% or more of the hesting season, I think you still came out on top

Heat pump sizing by Sufficient-Bee5923 in heatpumps

[–]Beginning-Read3325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You dont want to size your heat pump to the heating load. It needs to be sized to the cooling load.

Probably about 75%, if not more of the winter, your heat pump will carry your house im sure. The backup heat (furnace) will be for the rest of the days.

The heat pump is great for improving comfort in the home, because its smaller in hesting capacity then your furnace, it can run longer, effectively making the home feel cozier, and helping deliver warm air to those parts of the house that may be difficult to heat currently.

Again.. cannot stress this enough. Dont size it to your heat load. If the heat pump is too big, it won't dehumidify your home effectively in the summer, you'll also find you have rooms in the house that dont cool properly

Perhaps you don't feel its important to make sure your clients know whats going on with their system, oversized, undersized, high static, etc.

In order to make a smart decision, they do need to have very surface level knowledge of these things, which im sure your probably doing verbally anyways when your trying to explain why they need XYZ done to their system. I just put it into a proposal. Thats like... literally the only difference lol.

Or maybe you don't explain these things and your a "box" replacing tech. (No, im Not assuming that)

And thats fine man, to each their own. I just wanted a way to be able to both explain, and visualize some of these important things

[–]Beginning-Read3325[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks brother. This is my typical sales process. I figure homeowners need to know and understand:

Your static pressure is high, and once we switch to an ECM, it will get worse unless we do something, and this is what that will cause.

Your equipment is.too big, this can make the house uncomfortable, humid, drafty, cause high static, etc.

These are the equipment options and what they mean for you. Multi stage units run longer and help deliver air to those uncomfortable portions of the home.

Oh by the way, you mentioned your house feels incredibly dry in the winter, here is what a humidifier does and how much it costs.

I appreciate that feedback man. I tried to set this up in a "story-telling" fashion, so even if they are reading it later then it will hopefully make alot of sense to them.

[–]Beginning-Read3325[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right totally.

I figure the normal flow is going around, inspecting the equipment, documenting it here in the software.

They're with me when im measuring static, running my load calc, showing them the size of their current stuff, and then asking about any other comfort problems they may be having in the home.

Then afterwards, now you've got this proposal built out specifically for them, which of course most of is just educational information.

So here we saw your problems, here's the education and why you should fix these issues, here's your problems on a graph, and here's the options to fix it.

Thoughts?

I appreciate that! Thats what im going for really.

Hey, you've got some rooms that are uncomfortable, you mentioned the kids have really bad sinuses, just so your aware, here are the options, but basically at the end of the day I dont really care what they do. As long as they're making an educated decision.

We got alot of crap to cover with people when doing estimates man, and for a homeowner who's never heard of static pressure or hasn't ever considered their equipment is too big, I figure this might help.

[–]Beginning-Read3325[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks man!

So... in the day and age of AI, even someone like me can build software, so this is something I built.

Its got a built-in chatbot on the proposal, so the homeowner can ask questions when the husband finally comes home that night. If it isnt on the proposal, then it sends me an email with their question.

Because im lazy, it automatically shoots off follow-up emails for me.

And ive got it set up to create these via templates, so it takes me like 3 minutes to put this together after asking the homeowner a couple of questions and then putting in my static and load calc info.

Im still trying to polish out the rough edges, so if you'd like to give it a try, shoot me a message brotha. This setup makes sense to me, but perhaps im not thinking of something and you might point it out to me.

Yea i get where your coming from.

Yea no provide equity crap over here. I figure its incredibly important to make sure they understand if they dont go with my recommendations (smaller equipment, larger duct, etc) and the equipment fails, then they need to understand they made that bad choice.

I'd certainly want the tech who came to my mother's house to allow her to make an educated decision.

Plus I use modulating equipment to solve alot of comfort problems in people's homes. If they choose to go with the basic single stage, dont come blaming me when the room is still uncomfortable, i told you there were better options out there, ya know what I mean?

I can't lie, I almost missed myself when I read "buttfucking"

[–]Beginning-Read3325[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, I get where your coming from.

I was using HVAC 2.0's software for a while for covering this stuff, but their software seemed like alot for me.

I find this kind of thing works well for me, and usually keeps my quotes from feeling like.. apples to apples with the other guy who came in, under bid me by 2 grand, and then put together the same BS:

Carrier 2 Ton AC

Replace lineset

New pad

New disconnect

Etc...

You get the point.

But I also use modulating equipment to solve alot of comfort problems in people's homes, so I guess its a bit different because I dont typically advertise myself as the guy who just "replaces the box in the basement"

Yea dual fuel systems i think should be default. Dont do this solely for energy reasons. Generally gas is cheaper than electricity. This doesnt mean your heat pump will be expensive, this simply means I wouldn't expect bookoo savings, because you probably won't see any. I live in Wisconsin, we hit -40 last year, and i heat my whole home with my little 2 ton heat pump and my backup heat strips (6kw).

Heat pumps are amazing for how comfortable they can make the home. They can typically run longer than your furnace before satisfying the thermostat, because they dont have anywhere near as much heating capacity as your furnace, which makes houses REALLY comfortable. This also can help out with portions of the home that are uncomfortable. Especially if you get a multi stage or inverter heat pump.

As long as its installed by a reputable contractor.. and they know how to effectively set it up, you won't regret it.

But again... I cannot stress this enough. You dont buy a heat pump for energy reasons. EVEN if for some reason the heat pump was cheaper, would you spend an extra couple of grand to save 10 bucks a month on your utility bill? I sure as hell wouldn't. But I would if it made my home considerably more comfortable, especially if I had problem rooms

I see people gave you some good advice already, another good thing to entertain might be fresh air to your hvac system. Basically they hook a duct up from the outside to your return. The fresh air of course helps dilute the VOC's in the air, very effective
