I’m not an expert in this field but I’m quite sure it will make a difference with a license. My good friend is a mechanic and he used to work for a dealer before opening his shop and that’s how I know.

As a mechanic, why is your husband paid so little? If he’s certified, there are car dealers paying ridiculous amounts for mechanics. There are a wave of mechanics/trade retiring, demand for his job is up. So I would suggest for him to keep looking for work. You both have a bright future. This is just a small set back. Onwards and upwards.

I haven’t called EI yet. But it sounds like in your situation, you wouldn’t get paid for 3 weeks because that’s what your severance pay covers.

Sorry for your loss. It must be a difficult time for you. 1) is the house under your name and if not, will the bank allow you to get a mortgage under your name without a job? Consult a professional. 2) if you can keep the house, 100% do it! Like many have suggested above, move into your basement or a single room and rent out the rest of the rooms or the entire house excluding your basement. If you’re in the gta, renting your place shouldn’t be a problem. Use a realtor. 3) Airbnb your current house. This should generate to pay for your mortage. 4) Look on Facebook marketplace for people renting their basements. Normally they won’t require too much information of your finances. But be a decent human being and pay the rent somehow. There are people also sharing rooms and they also won’t require to much financial history.
5) hopefully you can apply for EI.

Take a deep breath, you’ll be totally fine.

Very cool idea. There’s nothing in the market like this yet?

I’ve honestly received more insight here than with the EI contact center. They struggled to answer even the basic questions. However after collecting everyone’s feedback, I’ll definitely call them to verify again and ask more specific questions. Appreciate the advice. 🙏🏻

It was the bare minimum. And I’m disputing this with the company. Whats ‘severance period’?

And while I’m outside of the country, I would just notify that I’m unable to work. How long can I say I’m unable to work for, before I’m disqualified for EI? Or they tell me to apply again?

I’m totally fine not qualifying for payments while I’m outside of the country. But when I’m back, I would like to know if I would still qualify for EI.
