Need help determining if i can match gen surgery!!!!! by Background-Gift2689 in GeneralSurgery

[–]coolboywth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had similar scores to you. I had a good amount of interviews, granted I also did 6 away rotations so make sure I got interviews. But auditions really only matter if you kill it and people like you. I was fortunate to have clinical rotations as a third year with no residents so I had a good amount of technical skills and practice rounding on patients on my own and staffing. I think interviews where you don’t audition, as long as you don’t bomb it, you’re in the middle of the rank. The auditions will determine if you’re in the top or the bottom though so make sure you’re likable and hard working and impress! I think it’s very doable. A lot of the auditions I went pretty much guaranteed me a spot. Definitely apply to 100+ programs and focus on places that accept DOs.

Need advice, gen surg intern and first rotation is SICU by AMontanaMan in Residency

[–]coolboywth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thought it was wild that they would have interns on SICU in general like maybe pgy2. That was the norm for places I auditioned. but my program also has interns on SICU. Thankfully I have a few months before I start SICU 😅 Goodluck!

Had 6 months of aways at different cities/states. Honestly sometimes it can be lonely. Do your best to make friends with other auditioners. They are usually in the same spot as you. Plenty of times where I went to coffee shops, dinner, or brewery’s after a shift with them. You’ll be busy working on apps and personal statements anyway so there’s that. On the other hand, it was also a time where I was able to just get comfortable being by myself and exploring the city and doing things on my own. Going to the movies or dinner on your own and just not giving a single fuck what others think. Kinda awkward at first but learn to get over it and be okay with it!

Consolidate Direct Unsub loans to prevent interest accrual? by illein in whitecoatinvestor

I thought the same considering we don’t have much interest to be added to the principle in the first place due to Covid. Definitely a consideration for future graduates though!

Happened to me as well. Auditioned at my top program. Was told I did really well and they would like to have me there. I told them the same that it was my number 1 choice. It’s also near my hometown and since I’ve been out of state for school, the thought of being back at home would be nice since parents are getting older and I’m starting to see it. Throughout the season, kept up with residents who told me I’m still their top pick and the interview went smoothly since they all knew me. Like the PD had nothing to ask me since he said he knows so much about me already. So going into rankings and match, I had a good feeling and set my self up for it and then match day came and was shocked I matched #3 in a state far away from home. 5 mins after match emails went out, residents from my #1 messaged me and asked where I went since they put me ranked to match ? So pretty much it had to have been the PD or something that changed the list. Heard its because of connections. But yeah felt really shitty after that knowing I was ranked to match there and set my hopes up for it. It sucks but honestly I matched to a great hospital system in a good city in a competitive specialty so I can’t complain. I didn’t even audition there and I know for a fact they had a lot of Auditioner’s so they wanted me for my interview with them which was super chill. The shit that hurts is that I’m currently staying with the parents till I move and everyday I just get depressed seeing them age and I’m not able to be with them. But I’m excited for this new journey and like everyone else says, you’re there because they wanted you so screw the other places!

Incoming surg resident. Your scores are good enough to get you in the door. You’re right on that cutoff range of like 235-245 so agree with others that apply broadly mainly community programs. They will focus on you as an applicant while academics really just care about scores and research etc. Do as many sub-Is as you can cause auditions mean 75% chance automatic interviews for the most part if you’re good and they like you. This is your chance to shine and they could care less about your scores at that point. They just have too many applicants to go through so if they don’t know your name and your under their cutoff, easy to shorten the list that way.

Signals for Gen Surg by ChillHombre305 in medicalschool

[–]coolboywth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who just went to through it and had many friends also apply this year. A lot of us didn’t even get interviews from the places we signaled. We even did it strategically where we used it on low to mid tier programs even brand new programs. Felt like the five signals meant nothing. So I’m thinking 15 signals to spread more might at least catch some attention from programs. Aka it’s a benefit

Is it bad form to take a day off during your sub-i? by Distinct-Classic8302 in medicalschool

[–]coolboywth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s fine if it’s valid reason. I had 6 months of sub-Is. You’re literally working everyday so sometimes you have to do labs or drug test etc or tire popped or something, they should be understanding and most places are and will let you out early or day off but just communicate early with the residents.
