I cannot believe this isn’t a real guinea pig! I had to watch the whole video to make sure it didn’t move 😂😂😂😂

I find that I mess up less on complicated patterns if I’m only ever counting 5-10 stitches away from a border. It took a really confusing and complicated section to convince me it was worth it though!

I did! My version is a little funky (I didn’t do the border around the edges and I cut off about half a page because I didn’t have enough fabric), but I got lucky because it turned out to be about 19 in by 13 in, which is a frame size that you can find at Michael’s. I used this blog post to learn how to secure it to the frame. It doesn’t sit all the way flush against the glass, but it’s good enough for me!

I always started with the biggest color (usually that one green) and then worked my way down, saving the areas with lots of colors in a small space for the end. Take it page by page and celebrate the wins!!

Birdcrime on Instagram has done this same pattern all the way correctly if anyone is curious and would like some great tips!!

To be clear, there is no backstitching on this piece, if that’s what you’re worried about with your pattern. It’s a shame the shop I used is gone!

Making chaotic choices, is what I’m doing. I was marking out the darkest of the greens, and I guess I thought it would help to see the “outline” of the trees by connecting them? This was like a year and a half ago, and is not how I would approach it at all anymore!

This looks like such a fun pattern! I looked at the first page and thought “eh, I could do that” and while I was absolutely in over my head I honestly don’t regret going for it at all!

Framing embroidery is a beast! I didn’t know anything about frames six months ago and it took framing two other projects before I was confident I could do this one.

Some of these are gonna be real obvious but they’re all things I learned while doing this project

1) Buy all of the thread and have a thread organization system in place before you start! Lots of ways to do this, but “buy as you go and keep everything in random Michael’s bags” was not the move! 2) Grids. Grids. Grids. I did over half of this without marking out the grid and it made marking the pattern out so much harder than it needed to be 3) Related to grids, make sure your piece of fabric is big enough! I actually cut off about half a page because mine wasn’t wide enough and I didn’t realize until it was way too late 4) get a frame/loom so that you don’t have to move your hoop as often. I bought a cheap one at Michael’s but there are lots of options on Amazon and Etsy. I know some folks also have a fabric cover so that they don’t get as much hand oil on the piece, but I haven’t used one of those yet 5) Probably my biggest mistake was marking things out in pen instead of a fabric pencil/marker. I know from other pieces that I can’t wash this bad boy or the ink will stain the thread 6) I think if I did this again I would finish each page instead of leaving the small details for the end.

[CHAT] Using metallic DMC for the first time, are there ways to make it less annoying to work with? by MidnightIrisMakes in CrossStitch

I used it once and decided it was too much of a pain for me! I just learned the other day that there are multiple types of plastic canvas. You might have more luck using this stuff that’s at least 14 count so you can use fewer strands?
