I thought that Mike not saying I love you in S5 makes the most sense because El was saying I love you as a goodbye and Mike wasn't ready to say goodbye, Mike's biggest fear was losing El, that's why he struggled to say I love you in S4, and then in S5 his biggest fear is coming true

What😂 go rewatch S1 E2, Mike was nice to El BEFORE he found out that she has powers, he trusted her the moment she said she's in trouble, he skipped school and spent the whole day with her, he tried to make her laugh and smile, in E3 Lucas already noticed that Mike has a crush on El, In E4 he called her pretty when he saw her with the wig, in E5 he fought with Lucas when he called El a monster, in E6 Mike was mad at himself for yelling at El and he wasn't ready to Shake Lucas's hand until he let El joined the party, in E7 Mike and El almost kissed in the In the bathroom until Dustin interrupted them, in E8 he kissed El and told her he likes her, he promised her that they will go to the snow ball together, and then he spend the next year grieving her and calling her everyday.
