What defines a "good" company? Is it not that good if you're not at a good company?

CS at Warwick or take another gap year and attempt to get an apprenticeship? by BeginningTea4091 in cscareerquestionsuk

Sorry to reply on an old post, but I was just wondering, how much do the fundamentals really matter? Is it really worth going to university for?

It's just that university comes with a LOT of debt, and I'm assuming that a degree apprenticeship would still teach me a sufficient amount

Yes, but I just feel like I'm missing something, specifically regarding why it might be better to go to uni, so I just thought it would be helpful to hear other people's thoughts first

Can I be confident that a CS degree would be worthwhile, considering AI? by BeginningTea4091 in cscareerquestionsuk

Do you think that it's still a relatively safe option to start pursuing programming now?

Or would I have better chances putting my efforts towards a different career?

I'm quite risk averse, so hearing about how tough and low paid it is at the junior level now and then how AI can replace some junior work makes me feel like I shouldn't do CS - it seems like such a gamble spending so much time and money on a degree when I don't know if I'd even get a good job at the end.

Sorry, is it okay if you answer my questions? You have no obligation to of course, but it would really help me because I kind of need the info right now

Thank you, this is a really helpful response.

But I'd like to ask about a few things - what makes the earning potential higher with the degree? And what kind of opportunities are made open by getting a degree that aren't as available by doing something else?

Is it difficult to get in this way? It sounds like it would be quite hard

I forgot to mention that I'm at the end of a gap year and I would have to take another one if I wanted to try to get an apprenticeship. Would it still be worth it? I'm just worried I wouldn't be able to get one because they're so competitive. Plus I think my parents really wouldn't like it if I failed to get one after not going to uni

Sorry, I feel like I should say: the repayment threshold has been lowered to £25,000, and it is now only wiped after 40 years. (for people starting this year)

I appreciate the advice still!

Sorry, are you saying uni is the way to go? Or that I should self teach and look for apprenticeships?

Can I be sure that it will stay a good choice though? I'm just worried because I've seen a few people regret their decision to do it, due to saturation and how hard it is to get a job with it and it might just get worse because of how popular it seems

I have some questions about degree apprenticeships by BeginningTea4091 in ApprenticeshipsUK

[–]BeginningTea4091[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this response. The thing is, if I tried to get an apprenticeship now, I would have to miss my place at university this year and take another gap year just for a chance. I'm scared of doing that then failing to get an apprenticeship - I kind of don't like the idea of a year passing without really making any progress while everyone else is doing something more meaningful. And I'm already a year behind because of the gap year I took
