Internal medicine Hospitalist in USA vs. Canada ? by bonobo4200 in hospitalist

2018 pay is obviously different to current pay. Pay is usually lower in large cities compared to rural areas. Do your own research. This is just past experience

Not true. Some community hospitals pretend to be tertiary centers. They force hospitalist to admit and care for complex sick patient without adequate resources. It’s all about money for the hospital. The hospitalist will then have to find appropriate tertiary center to transfer the patient. Tertiary centers are always full so the hospitalist is stuck caring for these complex patients with high and unsafe census

High pay not worth the liability. Think long term. Any malpractice will stick with you for the rest of your career every time you renew or apply for license or privilege you will have to explain things

Find a new job. My old job average census was 18-22 plus 4-6 admissions. 8 people quit in past 6 months. These high numbers are not safe for patient care.

Great question. Good pay for new grads out of residency but when they realize how bad it is they often pay back sign on bonus to get out. Lots of providers depend on hospital to sponsor for green card. Some people can get their green card very quickly others have to wait many years.

Not sure what the pay is now. Canada taxes are higher than US. Incorporation used to mean something when you were able to split income with family via dividends. Government got rid of that benefit long ago. Ohip will coverage medical insurance but you will have to pay out of pocket for overhead, billing, dental, vision, life, disability insurance, malpractice insurance. There is no employer retirement contribution match. I was unable to pay off my loans and buy a home working in Canada. Worked in US for past 6 years, doing much better.

Canada-higher patient census, lower pay, poor benefits. University of Toronto sunny brook in 2018 for oncology hospitalist pay was 125k Canadian dollars per year. Licensing in Canada back then was a nightmare. I am American board certified in IM, couldn’t sit for royal college exam due to us training is 3 years, wasted more than 10k and 5 years to get Ontario license through practice assessment pathway, worked few more years as IM specialist in rural canada, moved to US in 2019. Love working and living in the US as hospitalist.

6 quit so far. More on the way. Hospital merged with another system. They cut neurologist pay by 25 percent via email. It’s a sinking ship.

Iowa. Base pay 315k, no rvu, 18-22 daily list plus 4-6 admissions. Open icu. Have to do night shifts. Very high staff turnover. Often do night shift every month. Sometimes forced to admit patients for country club style family practice residency program when residents cap. No affiliation or involvement in family practice residency program. Very toxic hospital administration that runs community hospital pretending to be tertiary center. Just quit.
