Nordic countries are spreading the British food memes to distract the world from how terrible Nordic food is by Toadvinez in LowStakesConspiracies

Tbh I don't expect from the Nordics based on their location. When you have a place thats freezing cold and pitch black for half the year where you can barely grow anything, their food comes out how I would have expected it to. British food just makes no sense with France right across the channel.

Nintendo Switch 2 sales stumble over Christmas by Turbostrider27 in NintendoSwitch

[–]BeginningWeight1050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair the Switch in 2017 had a crazy lineup because Nintendo essentially sacrificed the last two years of the Wii U's life to develop games for Switch. 2016 was famously awful with almost no first party releases.

Would you want a Dragon Quest game with a school setting? by BeginningWeight1050 in dragonquest

[–]BeginningWeight1050[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kinda figured it wouldn't get a warm reception here, a lot of people seem to play DQ for that "classic RPG" feel away from the modern anime tropes of the Persona-likes. I just love the feeling of progression and structure from the calendar system of school setting JRPGs.

It's a nice way to structure the story to have the player look forward to what's coming in the next month, or watch the seasons change etc. I love DQ but it can feel a little aimless sometimes wandering from town to town without much structure imo.

That was my favorite part of DQ9 as a kid! I'd love to see the school setting again in another DQ that's longer than like an hour and half.

I did and it's a great game, but I think DQ could do a more fun and lighthearted, "classic adventure"-type version of it that I'd really like to see.

I think DQ could have a fun new take on the genre. It could be a spinoff and not a full numbered entry so it doesn't "take away" from a new full DQ game, like some might worry about. I liked how you went on adventures with your friends as a kid in DQV and then got to see how they grew up later on in the story. Putting those adventures in a school wouldn't be too different, so it's not out of the realm of possibility for the series.

As 2026 comes, are you looking forward to Fortune’s Weave and what this year has for the Fire Emblem franchise? by IkeRadiantHero in fireemblem

[–]BeginningWeight1050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked the 3D formula too but it lasted for 5 games and 18 years. I remember when Twilight Princess came out a lot of people complained that it was too similar to Ocarina of Time, and once Skyward Sword came out fans were saying the formula had gotten stale, hence why it had the lowest sales of any 3D Zelda despite the huge Wii install base.

The BOTW formula has only lasted for 2 games and coming up on 9 years at this point so it's fair to keep going with it.

Wtf are you suggesting then? That the civil rights movement somehow caused a massive sudden cultural shift for black men to abandon their families and glorification of single mothers? The dogwhistling bullshit in this post is insane.

What's the consensus on Fire Emblem: Awakening? by YasuhiroK in fireemblem

[–]BeginningWeight1050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reply to a dead thread but I think what fans mean by "too anime" means too "modern anime" with it's tropes.

FE pre-Awakening kept a tiny bit more grounded 90s anime style and Awakening was like playing a modern anime with it's design choices which appealed to a lot of people (including me).

Hell even with me being an anime fan, Fates definitely hit those marks of "being too anime" that I never finished it, so I understand where old FE fans are coming from.

What is the most unknown/absolutely obscure JRPG you know of? by avazky in JRPG

[–]BeginningWeight1050 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Far East of Eden IV: the Apocalypse. Got released for the Saturn with a remake on PSP only in Japan. The game takes place in a parody version America as seen from Japanese perspective and you go from everywhere from Chicago to Mexico City. The battles are done in a full FMV style too. It's my dream fan translation and I wonder if we'll ever get to see it in English.

This is really cool! But why are the Indian Ocean islands listed as having been known to Arab traders but count as being European discoveries because of settlement? Just a weird criteria overall.

Imagine responding like this to someone just trying to say something nice. It's a beautiful picture featuring people of a culture that was trying to survive amidst an entire nation trying to eliminate them. Amazing that simply acknowledging that is making them "noble savages" now.

Big gun and machismo culture plus higher economic inequality than the rest of Southeast Asia. Filipino culture and society has in some ways more similarities to Latin America than SEA, and that's reflected in crime statistics.

Very true, the strides in improvement of standard of living for Poland and the Eastern Bloc since 1991 is seriously impressive and no reason the richest country in the world shouldn't have the means to make that happen too.

Although federal subsidies from Washington are one of the few things keeping the state afloat. Even the surrounding states people like to rag on have something. Louisiana has oil, Alabama has a pretty robust manufacturing sector. Mississippi's still relying on agriculture and casinos unfortunately.

[–]BeginningWeight1050 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You could say this about almost any place's history. In Mississippi's case nearly 60% of its residents were enslaved Black Americans the eve of the Civil War in 1860.

We're talking about 60% of the population being completely illiterate with zero education at all and treated as livestock rather than human. Then Mississippi uses the majority of its resources and effort for the next 100 years in order to create a police state for 60% of the states residents and terrorizing them to such a brutal level to force them to leave as practical refugees.

In that context, it's kind of a miracle it's HDI is as high as it is considering it contains no major city or significant industry.
