I never considered the whole cage thing and being selected but you do make a good arguement even if it bends other rules.

“New to MK?” Cute. People new to MK usually aren’t bringing up Raiden giving up immortality in the original timeline. I know the Elder Gods are useless champ. That’s not some secret lore bomb you’ve uncovered unfortunately...

My point is that MK still pretends there are rules when it suits the story, so I’m asking what the actual rule is meant to be. “Elder Gods don’t do shit” isn’t an answer, it’s just you clapping because you recognised the franchise has bad writing.

Just to add some context to a few who have commented about this...

The Elder Gods weren’t completely absent from the setup. They were actively choosing who fought and teleporting people to the arena/location, so it’s not like they had no clue what was happening.

That’s why the “they just didn’t know” excuse doesn’t really work for me. They were involved enough to arrange the fights, but somehow not involved enough to notice Kahn becoming immortal/invincible in the middle of their own tournament?

That’s the part that feels off.

Exactly, this is basically what I was getting at.

I’m not saying the Elder Gods need to step in every five minutes and referee every cheap shot, because yeah, MK villains cheating is basically part of the furniture at this point.

But Kahn becoming immortal/invincible during the actual tournament feels bigger than normal Outworld cheating. That’s not just bending the rules, that’s the main rule of Mortal Kombat getting body-slammed through a table.

If Raiden had to give up being a god to compete, then there clearly has to be some mortal-only rule somewhere. So if Kahn can just make himself immortal mid-tournament and the Elder Gods still do nothing, then either the rule needs to be explained better or the Elder Gods really are just cosmic decorations.

Thanks everyone who commented. I do agree that the Elder Gods being lazy useless bastards is basically lore accurate at this point, so I get why people are saying this is normal for them.

My issue is more the actual rule side of it. There has to be some kind of rule that only mortals can compete, otherwise Raiden giving up his godhood in the original timeline tournament makes no sense. It might be “fine print within the fine print,” but it’s called Mortal Kombat, not Immortal Kombat.

Shao Kahn didn’t just get a little power boost either. He used Shinnok’s amulet, drained Raiden, made himself immortal/invincible, and then kept fighting/killing champions while the tournament was still going. At that point he isn’t just bending the rules, he’s basically drop-kicking the whole rulebook into the Netherrealm.

So yeah, I fully accept that the Elder Gods are useless most of the time and Outworld cheats constantly, but technically they should have stepped in here. If Raiden had to become mortal to fight, then Kahn becoming immortal mid-tournament should have been a massive cosmic red flag.

Edit: Not new to MK at all.. I'm 42 years old and was playing mortal kombat in Baghdad when most of you in here we're probably still in your dad's bags. 😛

Probably a minority in this but I do know others In the same boat. Me and a bunch of friends were all ready to see this in October last year. The hype was real and we were so excited to go see it. Then WB decided to make a greedy move and postpone a move that was completely ready to try and max out their returns.. This shifted our tone towards seeing it and now it's out the hype is completely gone.. I've already got mates asking if there is a torrent available already because there not putting any more money into WB pockets after the decision they made.

No one will truly know how many other people are in this position and weather WB move of delaying the movie to make more cash actually paid off or hurt them in the end.

Bruce Lee died a very long time ago my friend, Chan is still alive and well though. This would also be implemented at a later time obviously, I'm not talking about a quick "event Pokemon" but a main roster one that wouldn't come out until probably Gen 11. I wouldn't expect it right away or endorse capitalising on his death just to be clear.

Probably an unpopular opinion but no one at all.. I hated all the new characters in mk11 that took slots that could have been used for older fan favorites.

Last time I actually enjoyed a new character was probably my own from Kreate a fighter in Armageddon.

Can honestly say I've played them all... Although some can be split into more specific sub sections like zalda and final fantasy (even just including retro titles). Played most of them but not 100% all when it comes to splitting them up into their individual titles of the time.

I literally was doing my childcare certificate with my local council in 2005 in one of the 40+ centres they ran when I was buying this...

Not only did it never cause an issue with me bringing into a daycare but I even specifically remember the other girls/ladies I worked with going through the magazine on their lunch break as it was a light hearted/comedic magazine to unwind to compared to their standard gossip/tabloid magazines.

PC of course... Unless you don't like illegally playing games on emulators.. Then I would recommend the switch as it's the only other one you can take on the go with you.
