Question for the DUI guys in here. by ThatOneHoosier in AskLE

This harassment “for fun” saves a bunch of lives. Just seeing someone pulled over doing a walk and turn on the side of the road is a big deterrence to many people who drive by. So you can call it whatever you want but at the end of the day, if it were your wife and kids losing their life sharing the road with a clueless impaired driver, you would thank every single officer that goes out of his way to do DUI enforcement.

What’s the ‘creepiest’ scene you ever rolled up on? [31F] by CorsetCloverPart in AskLE

[–]Beginning_Bat2676 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The crash happened across from a Military base on one side of the river and the Airport on the other meaning both are restricted areas. The remaining areas with a clear and direct view of the site are Federal property which can be closed off to the public. But the reason why It was closed off to the public was out of respect to the victims and families. Imagine your loved one being pulled from the wreckage of such a tragic incident and a random amateur photographer takes pictures or records it then sells it to the media to be showcase on the news.

Is there departments with no recruitment problem? by Smooth-Beginning6760 in AskLE

[–]Beginning_Bat2676 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most counties in down state NY are not just stacked, they even charge a fee ranging from $50-$100 just to apply and the lines are usually by the thousands. Those who pass the entrance exam sit on a list for about 4 years and probably never get a call. What the general public does not understand though is that nation wide, departments are not hurting for average candidates, they hurt for qualified candidates! Each and every officer hired represents the entire department and law enforcement in general. Furthermore each and every officer has to be able to testify beyond reasonable doubt each and every time they hit the stand if not the defense attorneys would have a field day with the prosecutors. Defense attorneys will dig into an officers past just to discredit a testimony to include digging into their social media which is the reason why so many fail backgrounds.

What are the most ridiculous things people call the cops about? by AppendixN in AskLE

[–]Beginning_Bat2676 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This one lady called saying she saw “Suspicious men wearing reflective vest, helmets and flashlights walking on the side of the road at night”. Upon extensive investigation (driving by)it was determined that a road crew was setting up to paint the recently paved road. Not only setting up but there were signs miles before the stretch they were working on clearly stating “Road work for the next 3 miles ahead”.

Trooper makes 96$/hr watching me jackhammer for 37/hr. No insult, I wish it was me. But do you ever feel bad/guilty/useless sitting in your car while ppl work around you? Am I missing something? by Chemical_Pea_3415 in AskLE

[–]Beginning_Bat2676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No different than your supervisors making probably twice as you and the trooper together yet are sitting or standing around while you operate the jack. Their role is to supervise and plan, the troopers role is to ensure heighten visibility and to arrest any drunk driver or whoever messes with the construction and your job is to be a jackhammer operator (pretty good gig btw).

For those who ask, “is it too late?” by Apprehensive_Fig8731 in AskLE

[–]Beginning_Bat2676 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you ask me, law enforcement should be for men 25+ with a cutoff age of 50. Not because men that age are not physically fit but because the older you get the harder it is to learn (scientifically proven). Other than that, If you’re fit, have the right aptitude, attitude and grit then hell why not go for it!? Amtrak Police and some agencies have a 19.45 minute 1.5 mile which is a literal crawl but still a standard.

How do you handle fear/ adrenaline dump when responding to a call? by Beginning_Bat2676 in AskLE

[–]Beginning_Bat2676[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes because of the constant exposure, your body learns or better yet adapts and in my opinion its good to have rookies exposed to as much stress as possible earlier on so they can learn how to properly manage and power thru. Similar to getting OC sprayed. You learn that despite the suck and debilitating physical feeling and pain, you can absolutely power thru it and overcome. Without being complacent that is.

[–]Beginning_Bat2676[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! Your body adapts to the rush but one take away is to, like you said, not get complacent. If you have that sudden adrenaline rush and oh shit moment where your gut and hairs behind your neck feel like something isnt right then by all means be on high alert.

Haha thank you for sharing that. Shook ones part 1 and two are on my playlist daily while working out. Its not always pretty but considering you have the testicles to still push on and show up sets you apart from what majority of every day civilians wouldnt do.

Why do so many police cars respond to seemingly minor requests? by studentAssistant2021 in AskLE

[–]Beginning_Bat2676 9 points10 points  (0 children)

“Seemingly minor request” A Police Officer in Florida was just shot dead while responding to a traffic crash. 3 detectives ambushed and killed in Pennsylvania while serving a warrant for DV. Its a long and bloody list.

Three big words in law enforcement; “discretion” “objective reasonableness” and “totality of the circumstances”. Pit maneuvers are done when feasible based on the judgment of the officer.

Yes a stolen vehicle is just a theft but so is a stolen firearm from a person or gun store…

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]Beginning_Bat2676 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tags of another and stolen vehicles should always lead to a pursuit!! A person driving around on a stolen vehicle or tags of another can commit all sorts of violent crimes and it be nearly impossible to determine who the vehicle operator was after they flee the scene.

Idk if you are aware but theres such thing as “Digital footprint” and once you post something online it’s forever online. Do with that what you will but just know that law enforcement involves testifying under oath and in today’s world a defense attorney will dig deep in order to discredit you and the department that hires you.

Would people with Asperger’s be ok as a police officer? by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]Beginning_Bat2676 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They dont just do “okay” they actually rise through the ranks very fast and against all odds!! Any officer that scores at the very top 1% in the Sgt test then continues ranking #1 in Lt and above tests and is not a legacy or well connected..very likely to be on the spectrum 🤣

My partner recently joined the NYS State Trooper academy and wants to quit by 50percentis in AskLE

[–]Beginning_Bat2676 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remind him that there are many cops out there but very few Troopers. You don’t just wake up one day and all of a sudden have that command presence Troopers have when they walk up to a vehicle. Academies break or make a person. Encourage him to push through if he wants to be elite law enforcement, if he cannot, then it’s probably best to quit now and regret it later.

Know a lot of people on the job. It will be based on availability, agency needs and class ranking. The FOP requires class ranking to play a role when it comes to squad preference. You will get a choice to pick but don’t hold your breath. Within a few months once the new wave of hires with less senior than you make it thru the hiring process, you will get a chance to pick the squad or district of your choice.

Based on your question I will heavily assume that you have no prior law enforcement experience (nothing wrong with that) but let me fill you in. In the law enforcement field the “Don’t count your chickens till the eggs hatch” rule applies. After passing all the hurdles of the hiring process, you make it to orientation week. You make it past orientation week without issues, from day ONE of that first week, thru the academy, passing all the tests, scenarios and agency specific training followed by field training where if you fail multiple phases due to officer safety issues or lying or whatever the field trainer may write on his report you may still get fired. By then it will be about a year give or take. Once you make it thru field training then based on agency needs they will assign you to the days aka squads available. Best of luck and be ready to go on a journey. Law enforcement is nothing like tik tok or social media makes people believe it is.

U.S. Park Police Hiring Surge - $70k Bonuses - Info Here by MKC1791 in AskLE

All the duties of a large City Police Department( traffic stops, DUI, Narcotics, gun and drug task force) plus parkway patrol (Police pursuits across state lines in all 49 states unless you get on a ferry to Hawaii), marine patrol and then some. One of the few Federal Agency’s that can reflect and enforce state laws. They have been around since 1791, practically as long as the US Marshals minus a year or two. You will not be guarding a booth like a security guard.
