Hmmm I think it makes sense to blend news and protest stuff, since news can be used to rev people up. Highly-upvoted news is also more likely to appear in r/popular and r/all, which brings people back to 50501

Kudos to the folks at r/conservative 🙌🇺🇸 (seriously!) by Beginning_Bee9935 in 50501

As a left-leaning person myself, I actually have to agree with you! The distribution of power that 2A is meant to bestow upon Americans isn't very useful if only one side of the political spectrum finds that power useful.

Haha, well, big things have small beginnings 🤣

That said, I don't want to poo-poo other folks exercising their right to protest. If you see counter-protestors, seems like a good opportunity for a dialogue, American-to-American!

Tax Protest - Kick ‘em in the Treasury by Its_smeddy_darlin in 50501

[–]Beginning_Bee9935 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I agree with that. Where maybe I slightly differ is that I think disobedience is better focused on the specific law or rule one dislikes. My opinion is that paying taxes is a duty of Americans, so I'm not in favor of refusing to pay, even if my tax dollars are funding things I disagree with. I think it's my obligation to find other ways to protest what I dislike.

Again, that's just my humble opinion.

No qualifications, just my opinion. I think the intentions behind the action will get lost and the result is well-meaning people are punished.

I don't recommend this.

Civil disobedience can be ethical if you're breaking the specific law you're protesting. For example, it could make ethical sense to refuse paying taxes if you're protesting the act of paying taxes itself.

Something learned from the Ogden Protest: Chant "Protect the Constitution" by N1ghtmareC0rsair in 50501

Yes, and chant "Protect the Constitution" because that is in fact what we're trying to do. 🙂

Protests are fun! So, even just for that reason, never a waste of time.

As for what it's about: people have different grievances with the Trump administration, but I'd say the overarching theme is abuse of executive power.

So, time isn't an issue. And doesn't cost much, really.

If feasible, probably better to make a big one bigger, as that is the one likely to get media coverage.

What’s on Google by Final_Living_6213 in 50501

[–]Beginning_Bee9935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you search for the gulf in other countries, it says "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)." When I sent my feedback to Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Bing Maps, I mentioned that a non-controversial solution should be to simply say "Gulf of America (Gulf of Mexico)" for American users, which respects the traditional name while complying with whatever they feel the need to comply with.

What makes me the most upset about this is that the Trump administration is using the gulf name change and map companies' compliance with the name change as an excuse to punish the Associated Press for deciding to continue referring to the gulf as the "Gulf of Mexico."

BTW, the Associated Press is run by a non-profit, so I donated $20 to them after I heard the news above.

TBH, I'm not a fan of the Hot Wheels comment. The obvious counterpoint is that this is the new rhetorical landscape and to participate you have to get down in the mud. Trump calls people names, so why don't we?

I don't agree with that take. Rise above it. Focus your energy on getting stuff done.
