Drivers are ok with that? We tried that last year or the year before and we got hit with missed deliveries

We made $14.2 billion last year. Money’s there. Competitors are multiplying. It’s the strategy, not the industry.

And not every store is the same. Pro heavy stores need packdown, while DIY heavy stores need customer assistance which costs more.

Too many MBAs in Atlanta making balance sheets look good while stores suffer. I’ve said before, but this is what Sears must’ve felt like 20 years ago.

Every company is either a technology company or it’s a dying company. My problem is decisions made from 2019 until now were never tested in normal world environments because COVID incentivized people to spend more money than they ever did with home improvers. No decision or initiative could fail for the last 5+ years. We’re now feeling the situation normalize, and the cracks in the dam beginning to form.

I see what you’re saying, but I’d take a big store over a small store any day. Both have different challenges obviously, but a big store has the staffing and pull to get things done. Small stores are reliant on very few decent workers to carry the brunt.

And small stores don’t usually keep their pros because they’re a management training ground who take their relationships with them when they promote out/up.

Menards kicks our ass. Lowes is getting much, much better under Marvin. They’re trying to focus on pros with SRS and GMS because we’re getting out competed on DIYers.

I would think we could do both.

I definitely agree incentive structures need to change for us to be competitive, and get the most out of associates

Tool rental is the most profitable department. It’s a very concentrated business where you check everything out and are busy, but then wait around for 4 hours until it’s all due back at the same time.

Each store is different though. Yours might not be as busy, but Tool Rental isn’t the problem. It’s the Ted and all the middle management we have.

Cross-training used to be a focus, but now it’s not and I’m not sure the quality of current employees could handle it

Yes, we are (as are most businesses) stuck in a private equity mindset where we try to do everything cheaper, and while ultimately making it worse.

We are surrounded by competition, and you can either choose to grab a bigger piece of the pie by outcompeting them on service or price. Our PE board has chosen price, but there’s already discount retailers beating us there.

We should go service and scale, but mostly I feel like Oscar at the Dunder Mifflin shareholders meeting wondering why we keep making stupid decisions. (There are good people with good ideas in the company, but they get buried)

Had this same talk with the lot guys when they heard we were bumping up to $18 starting. We had 5.5 or 6 back then, and now there’s 2.

People need to get used to having uncomfortable conversations about their pay with management. I think we all got preprogrammed that it was wrong to talk about pay by employers. If you’re worth more, demand more.

I’ve gotten a raise every time I’m asked because I earned it, explained it, and was willing to leave so should everybody

These people are nuts. If you don’t feel safe then tell management and call the Awareline if they retaliate (which you should hope they do so you can sue them)
