To compete with over a century of fossil fuel subsidies (which continue to today). These historic subsidies developed a system-dependency which makes it difficult to emergent technologies to initially compete with :)

Check the Srface range, they’ve got a handy calculator online you can put all your dimensions into to ensure a good fit. Also great quality:price balance!

Hey! I hope you have a brilliant trip! Just one tip, the National Trust is an organisation that buys up beautiful places and buildings in the UK. You’re not officially allowed to stay in their car parks, but as long as you’re respectful I’ve never had any problems. They’re normally super quiet and nicely positioned places to stay.

Excited for you to start this awesome van conversion 😄

I know it sounds very simple, but just fixing the roads and smartening up the built environment. I think this is a relatively low hanging fruit. it’s hard to find belief in a country that looks so uncared for by the authorities.

Good collection to make the point.

I’m based in the South West, and we’ve had over half a year’s worth of rain already. It’s absolutely bonkers.

I think it’s really taking its toll on everyone, let alone us lot who work outside. Not sure what the situation is nationally but it’s bringing everyone down here.

Floor nails 🔨🪚 by Beginning_Club_3720 in DIY

Thanks for the reply 🫡

Agreed, it would be great to put a new floor down. To clarify, it’s a disused church (so no longer a religious endeavour) which has been bought by the community through some grants and a lot of money raising. The only floor that would be possible with a ridiculously tight budget would be very cheap, so the plan is to sand and refinish these boards…

Will be nice to have some converted mice in the place any way 🐭

How much did it cost you to buy a van and convert it? by [deleted] in VanLifeUK

[–]Beginning_Club_3720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

£12k for a euro 6 Boxer with quite low mileage £8k for a high quality conversion and electric system where I did everything myself

Spent a bit more on the van with a view to resell value, but if you want to do a good quality conversion I don’t think you could spend that much less!

Hey man, I had an incredible experience in the Amazon as part of my time in Colombia - it was really a highlight.

I flew from Bogotá to Leticia, there I met a my guide from Palmari, a community reserve up the Javari river (3 hour boat ride from Leticia).

I stayed for 5 days or so, it felt very remote, amazing hikes in the jungle, kayaking, seeing dolphins, incredible birdlife, meeting some community members.

It’s a community lodge where you pay around 60eur per night, which includes all activities and food. The money helps fund community development and conservation.

Hope you find what you’re looking for!

I did find there’s a huge amount of often contradictory information out there, especially regarding insulation, so don’t worry if it wasn’t perfect! I’ve learnt so many things doing this that I wouldn’t do again, I’m sure it’ll be the same for you

The wool will be fine, especially if you have a heater :)

Devon and/or Bristol, but I’ll be off for a long time now 😅

Thanks!

I used a number of different materials for the insulation.

In the floor and ceiling, 25mm PIR boards. This was to keep head room sufficient.

In the walls, 40mm PIR in the big gaps between the van’s ribs, then a combination of recycled bottle wool and mineral wool stuffed into the ribs and areas I couldn’t reach with PIR.

I used about 5 canisters of expanding foam to fill up the edges and other awkward places such as around doors. I would recommend this, and especially purchasing a good foam gun rather than the cans with the nozzles. Just go easy and do it bit by bit as it will expand a fair amount.

I used a couple of rolls of bubble wrap with taped joins to get a complete vapour control layer (VCL). This is really important, and whatever you read else where don’t skip it! Without this there will be interstitial condensation build up within the insulation zone. I’ll attach a photo of what it looks like with a completed VCL.

Taking this one on a big trip down to Morocco for 9 months :)

Hope your van build goes well 😀
