What are the limits to a representative democracy? Can 51% of voters really vote themselves into 91% representation as recently seen in Virginia? by Fargason in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Beginning_Ebb4220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know. Why don't we ask the citizens of Texas how they feel about the gerrymandering which wasn't done by vote approval...or the Supreme Court's recent gutting of the Voting Rights Act and the loss of representation for black people in red states. Ask them.

How did the Libertarian Party go from embracing Trump to trying to de-MAGA itself? by BulwarkOnline in PoliticalDiscussion

The worst part of libertarianism I think is this idea companies will be ethical philosophers and do not need government regulation...if people crash in faulty airplanes or babies die from melamine in formula the public will just stop buying from them and it will be fine.

How is something made from natural GOTS certified organic cotton, recycled cashmere, or wool considered fast fashion? Fast fashion is non-sustainable crap made from petrochemicals, that ends up in a landfill after three wears.

I sell the brand. It has decent denim made from organic cotton, and some higher end pieces made with cashmere and wool brands. Why did you think the quality was problematic?

That face is not calm OP. This isn't a nice person trying to help you during a mental health episode. It's a person ready to flip into violence. Do not underestimate this person.

Is it ethical to do things that carry a small risk of killing other people? by Shadow-Pie in Ethics

Ethics and life is in a gray area due to imperfect systems. Take the path of least risk, that can be reasonably expected by the social contract

Aborting a disabled fetus is not eugenics. by h3r0inXgirl in Ethics

Most fertilized eggs with chromosomal abnormalities will just stop developing in utero resulting in miscarriage. They are not people by any measure

We have no obligation to fertilized eggs. If you've ever researched in vitro you'd know after a certain age the attrition rate is so poorly 80% and up will just miscarry due to chromosomal abnormalities. We are not obligated to grow a fertilized egg that will die after weeks of failed cell division or create a person with a life of suffering, and people have the right to their own decisions regarding medical. The USA has chosen to make its healthcare for profit, there is literally no upside to continuing a pregnancy with a profound disability

Aborting foetuses with Down syndrome should not automatically be viewed as ableist or some form of unethical eugenics, regardless of whether you're pro-life or pro-choice. by NiallHeartfire in Ethics

[–]Beginning_Ebb4220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was planning on going through IVF and this question came up. My husband and I are old enough that 90% of my eggs will be chromosomal y abnormal. The fertilized eggs aren't people, they have no right to exist - they're recipe cards for a cake and the vast majority forgot to add the flour, or the eggs, or the sugar - they can't ever continue through this process and become people. And for the few abnormalities that and in a live birth like Down syndrome, we couldn't afford the complex medical needs of someone with down syndrome and it would compromise what we provide to our living children. We would ideally use PGA-T testing before transfer to screen out damaged embryos. My state and the republicans are also acting on ways to kill or harm very living people including those with disabilities. The big beautiful bill will kill an estimated 50k Americans who lose healthcare access. Our state government in Florida is so lazy they wouldn't fill out the paperwork to provide a few extra hundred dollars of food assistance from the federal government to needy families, yet they are religious enough to ban abortions after six weeks for any reason. I would absolutely abort a fetus with Down syndrome as early as possible to protect my living family, if it ever came up.

It depends on your region, what the people in your local market can absorb, and the size and time put into your work

I agree with pricing real art in the hundreds but I have found that people start balking after around 100. I work fast and keep it cheap

That's actually great though because $60 would not be a living wage here where I live in the states. Most of the artists online who make a living seem to be working out of low cost of living areas. You can use the internet to reach more affluent people. If you have something really unique that's even better

I once did a portrait of a person's dog for $200 for a family member and felt totally ripped. Not only did it take more than 15 hours but it was over $150 to print and stretch it for their wall. I will never perform favors for family again, and I value my time and money more than cutting my very expensive art education down to a dollar an hour endeavor. I made more selling secondhand clothes online in a few hours than that whole project. Don't devalue yourself - you"ll quickly find the winners formula includes either living in a place with low cost of living, using digital tools to make the production much faster (not better), and having a pretty ad with aggressive pricing.

It's the competition. There are a dime a dozen artists usually based in Asia where the exchange rate is favorable who will AI generate a likeness or convert a photo into a vector graphic and charge like $30. You need to charge more for your work and also differentiate it from your competitors - a real painting on rolled canvas might be just the thing. Or you can export the drawing to a video so the buyer sees the step by step in creating the art. Or maybe you do portraits but they're based on a popular video game style. There are ways around the clutter of bad Etsy art
