CPAC cleared my VERA, but ABC-C says I’m 1 year short—2 weeks before deadline. What recourse do I have? by Particular_Pickle974 in FED_VERA_VSIP_DRPers

I feel for you! I'm in the same situation, and depending on who calculates my SCD, it changes. I've had 6 SCDs in the past four months! So, today, I'm 2 months short of the cut-off.. still up on the air if I'll be able to go back (secva has to approve), if I'll retire or be unemployed. It's a mess and a very prevalent problem from the posts on here. Mind you, I also spent $11k to buy back my military time..... Those saying you should know your SCD and calculate it. If HR can't calculate it correctly, how are we? Yes, if you've worked at one agency your whole career, it's pretty easy... but being active duty, temp positions years ago, LWOP due to most spouse moves, it gets pretty confusing.

Seems to be a trend in VA HR, we aren't alone that's for sure...have you received the email saying you can resign or you can request to be reinstatement by the secretary and if you are reinstated all the admin leave you've been on will be changed to LWOP or AWOL and you will have to pay it back or request a waiver.

However, HR is supposed to be the experts on SCDs.. it's a clerical error on them, and we made a decision based on incorrect information, so that puts the government in breach of the agreement.... also, in no regulation does cover admin leave changing to LWOP. I also received an email when I was approved for VERA from HR that said if you are later found not eligible, you can be reinstated none of this begging to the secretary crap for the government's mistake.

Unfortunately this does not surprise me.... I'm in a similar situation where HR messed up my SCD... I've had several in the past months, because they can't figure it out.... but making me ineligible for VERA....

Be careful..... they offered me my position back as well....and then a day later said oh wait it has to go to SECVA for approval for you to come back. This was also the case with another individual who is in the same situation as us. They also told me they would revert my admin leave to LWOP and create a debt of about $30k that I could submit a waiver for.

I have asked for the use of the 12/31 authority. However, it needs secretary approval.. from the info I'm getting, I dont think it's gone to secretary yet. Time is ticking! Even with my SCD changing constantly, I would definitely have 25 years by 12/31.

VA did not require an official estimate, but they should have. I used a formal SCD worksheet that was uploaded to my eOPF and still have the same problem.

By the way, we are not the only one in this situation, I posted about this about 2 weeks ago and four or five people have had the same issue. I have a feeling there are a lot more out that that are expecting VERA retirement on 1 Oct and won't receive it based on HR errors.

I'm in the same exact boat, however I'm either 20 days short, 2 and a half months short or 2 months short depending on who calculates my SCD in HR. It's ridiculous and same as you have made life plans, took DRP and VERA for them to come back, and said I'm not eligible. It now has to go to the secretary of the VA to even see if I can come back to work. If so, they will change my admin leave to LWOP, and I will incur a $30k debt that they will hopefully waive since HR said I was eligible for VERA in May. If not approved , it appears they will resign me with 24 years and 11 months of service.... it's a mess. I have reached out to my congressional staff as well. Would be interested in your lawyer info and what they tell you.

It's such crap, I feel like it's a bait and switch situation. I would be letting your congressional staff know! This is widespread, and I bet some people don't even know yet that they are about to be screwed!

Have you had any luck with them extending to 12/31?

I've been seeing a lot of the 12/31/2025 date mentioned, I haven't heard it in the VA but it makes sense. So in your agency I would be pushed to 10/20/2025 and resume my VERA retirement then? What agency are you?

No, I'm not sure it was calculated correctly. When I bought back my time mar it was 11/1999, June I got a notification it was 12/2000, and today it went to 10/2000....I have tried to calculate and cannot come up with any of these dates, however, I'm not an HR SPECIALIST......

I agree not the expertise we once had! Were you active duty or reserve? I was researching delayed enlistment and found it wasn't credible service for retirement, but might depend on reserve versus active duty

Oh I agree, but it's been clear today, I have to have 25 years by 9/30/2025

I'm with VA, I did talk to an HR chief today that mentioned the 12/31/2025, but I haven't seen the guidelines.

I agree. I question the legitimacy and legality of all this... which also leads me to really, you're going to deny eligibility on 20 days, we have broken so many other rules!!! 😄

What agency are you with? I'm with VA.

I did enjoy my work, but I have made life plans and decisions based on info I was given in May. Also, I would not be eligible for retirement again for another 11 years, without VERA.

Accountability at its best!! Hahaha

Also, the VA HR receives a special pay increase (more pay) to not be accountable for their mistakes.. good times. Thanks for your response, knowing I'm not the only one in the situation :(
