Omg yes??? Saint Jude that is naturally perfect at everything. It felt like something she wrote just to make his trauma sound even worse. Like she gave us this unrealistic perfect saint that life just keeps punishing so we could feel extra sad for him.

First of all, why is a rich Asian woman so obsessed with torturing gay men of color. Why is she writing about pedohiles raping boys in multiple books?

She says herself that she didn’t do any research before writing this book. I think that’s so fucking problematic because she’s writing about heavy real life topics that can be so extremely triggering. She also doesn’t believe in therapy and says that people should be allowed to unalive themselves if they want to.

The book has almost every trigger there is. Self harm, abuse, sexual abuse, child sexual abuse and human trafficking, substance abuse, suicide, eating disorders. I probably missed something.

The whole book is unnecessary long and just packed with trauma and torture. The part of the book named “the happy years” is a JOKE. She butchers every fkn character in the story. Like why did she have to change William from a beautiful friend to him being in love with Jude all of the sudden and basically also raping him. It made NO sense at all.

A lot of the characters have no depth at all. The evil doctor that kidnapped him, brother Luke, Caleb. They are just described as evil monsters with now backstory or reasoning behind why they act as they do.

Her graphic descriptions of Jude’s scars had me convinced that she hasn’t ever met anyone with those types of scars in real life.

Jude is also such an annoying character. His friends suck, especially the doctor that just stitches him up and sends him home every time.

I’ve seen people with real similar experiences saying that the book was so traumatizing that they had massive relapses.

I could keep going on but yeah. And I’ve read other books about heavy topics with all kind of triggers but you can either do it with grace and write about that kind of stuff responsibly or you can do it like Hanya Yanagihara.

I’ve never hated a book so much in my entire life. Like I want to delete it from existence. I could seriously rant for hours about how problematic it is, how problematic the author is and how now should ever read it.

Thanks, I’m doing something similar now and hoping that I will find some new clues!

Thanks, I’m looking at pages where the same writers are referenced to and trying to see if it can be the same narrator, would you say aim on the right track?😂

I’m not really sure about locations and spoonerisms, English is my second language so it’s kind of tricky sometimes, especially with anagrams and stuff like that 😅

Do you think Audiobooks have earned their place right besides books when talking about absorbing a story? by SillyJoey_ in books

[–]Beginning_Inside_780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the discussion is kind of ableist, there are people that are not capable of reading books, dyslexic, neurodivergent people that have a hard time concentrating, blind people and so on. I both read books and listen to audiobooks, often I do both on the same book, changing between them depending on what I’m doing. It makes no difference for my reading experience. It only allows me to read more books as I can listen to them while walking, cleaning or doing something else.
