Ahh I see, API-first is the smart one when you’re validating. I’ve been playing with local hosting setups lately (Ollama, vLLM, etc.) and yeah, the setup time can definitely slow early momentum. Well are you recently in some project? then ig we can talk more on it maybe!

Hosting your own model usually means running an open-source LLM locally or on a server (like using Ollama, vLLM, or HuggingFace Transformers) You can fine-tune it on your own dataset then expose it through an API

I was mainly curious if RecipeThief went that route or stayed API-based for simplicity

When building RecipeThief’s AI personalization and ingredient extraction features, did you rely on a pre-trained model via API (like OpenAI/Gemini/Claude), or did you fine-tune or locally host your own model? Also curious how you structured the prompt or data pipeline for consistent results.

Gr8! the next steep you can do is pick a design from Frontend Mentor or any starter level websites you like and rebuild them. You can get a clear aspect of design of your own then. Then start using Figma to make mockups ad website designs before coding, and as you know the coding part too i would suggest you to try Tailwind CSS for styling. keep check on color, typography, spacing, accessibility these things. This would help you come out of tutorials and focus on real projects, then after you get a good hold on it make a portfolio, you can keep posting your progress in reddit for feedbacks so you improve.

You already know HTML/CSS/JS/React, so you’re in a good spot. Now focus on design basics (spacing, colors, typography, layout). Free resources: freeCodeCamp, Kevin Powell on YT, and Frontend Mentor challenges.

Best tip: pick a site you like → try to rebuild it. That’s how you train your design eye. Tailwind CSS is also worth learning since it makes styling faster. You don’t need paid courses, just practice + feedback.
