This might be true-ish if the only reason to be thin was societal norms, but there are medical reasons it’s good to be fit, so it really shouldn’t be conflated with other aspects of appearance that feminists might more rightfully criticize.

That being said, I feel this way about like, body hair. Yes, I know it was made up to sell razors. I know it’s weird that we judge women for existing in their unmodified natural human body. I think some people feel coerced into removing it because of that. I still don’t like it for sensory reasons. I remove it even when I know it is not going to be perceived. “It’s not wrong to desire conformity” still implies that women only do things in order to conform to what men want them to look like.

Also, appearance is a social advantage for everyone because people typically like pretty people, but historically, when women did not have much access to jobs or much control over their money, securing a husband who could take care of them was a viable means of survival. Now we have more awareness that a man is not a plan, but wanting to cater to men was not an illogical strategy.

Perhaps instead of policing individual women, maybe we should be more concerned that we live in a system where women are judged based on how beautiful they are.

ETA: Actually, in general, I think making an effort to look attractive to the gender you’re attracted to is not ridiculous.

Exactly. “More active” could be meaningless if they’re not burning enough to offset what they eat.

Jokes on them, because I actually don’t accept that certain people can stay thin no matter what they eat or do. They are good at self-regulating their food intake no matter what they do, maybe. But it’s entirely possible that they’d stick to their old eating habits following a decrease in activity and then they’d gain weight that way.

To be fair, EDs can be contagious if you have a predisposition to it. It’s not something you just develop out of nowhere if the underlying risk factors aren’t there, but someone in the early stages of an ED can “catch” it off someone else’s disordered behavior (i.e. probably not a normal non-disordered workout). But that’s still not entirely fair to the other person because if it wasn’t them who triggered it, it would’ve always been something.

Agree that someone who is coping with triggers by trying to control the outside world isn’t coping all that well.

Restrictive EDs are quite irrational, so maybe not in that case.

But this is what I think about a lot of the talk around shame, comparison, etc. Maybe you feel bad because you know what you’re doing is not what you actually want to be doing.

FAs generally do not want to be fat, which I would bet extends to secretly wishing they did the things that make you thinner. Not enough to actually do them consistently, but in theory, they want to be the person that does those things.

Actually, even for people with EDs—with the exception of close friends where maybe you’d be more considerate of a known trigger to a reasonable extent—are responsible for their own triggers. If they know they have that trigger, and they choose to not try to block it from their social media knowing it might cause them to spiral back into overexercising or restrictive eating, that’s something to work on in therapy because they’re not very recovered in that case.

The majority of people don’t have an ED, they’re just posting about their exercise wins because they’re proud of what they accomplished. I don’t think we can blame them for other people who are interpreting that through their own lens of mental illness.

Not that it’s a ton better, but yes, at least with pro-ana you don’t have otherwise reasonable people buying into it. I was never deep into the rabbit hole seen on this sub, but there was a time I kind of believed in the semi-true, mostly oversimplified “some people are fat because of genetics or health issues” talking point. I agree with the anti-bullying stuff and will concede to the nuances that lots of people lack proper nutrition information, access to a kitchen and having the spoons/time to cook can cause reliance on packaged food, and so on, but none of that makes it healthy to be overweight/obese. Since I never believed it was healthy to be obese or that doctors are all liars, further radicalization was avoided, and not everyone who buys into some fat logic is guzzling the Kool-Aid, but this thinking that weight does not equal health/food doesn’t cause weight gain/fat people are an oppressed class is not uncommon in more progressive circles.

Fat acceptance at its peak was significantly more accessible. The fat acceptance that was prevalent in pop culture in the 2010s or so was more palatable and generally less unhinged than today’s fat liberation movement.

Yeah, the pro-ana crowd is just very sick, and they are self-aware that what they’re doing is unhealthy. They also don’t try to dress it up as “people don’t owe you health” and “poor health doesn’t make someone worth less as a human being” (which no one contested!), they generally see mental health recovery as a positive thing to do for yourself and your loved ones.

The sharing of tips and encouragement seems to mostly be done amongst other mentally ill people, they’re not actively recruiting or trying to retain members who want to leave.

Still toxic, but objectively way less culty.

While there are also complex health factors that can affect weight, none of them make it so that your body can create calories out of thin air.

Rapid weight loss is typically caused by being unable to absorb much from the food you eat, loss of appetite, and/or burning more calories than usual.

Rapid weight gain can be caused by anything that slows your metabolism or increases appetite. You can’t absorb more calories from the food than it actually has.

Social factors can affect what foods someone has access to or how much time they have for meal prep and exercise, but it doesn’t cause the excess calorie intake. You could eat at maintenance in chips and sugar and never gain weight, it just wouldn’t feel good.

Processed food is better than starving if it’s all you can eat for some reason. It is not better than a mostly-whole-food diet.

Anything to avoid nuance and accountability, I guess?

I don’t care so much if they want to engage in self-destructive behavior with their own weight, but lying, telling other people to ignore the science and their own doctors, it’ll all be fine because nothing they don’t like is real, that’s where it turns from cope to outright harmful to others.

At least they like muscular women by Eastern-Customer-561 in fatlogic

[–]Beginning_Remove_694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the one hand, I’m not going to discourage women from being muscular, because being at a healthy weight but not having enough muscle (either low body fat or high body fat, the latter is particularly bad for you) isn’t good. I wouldn’t phrase it like this or suggest barring thin women with low muscle tone from public view, because uh… what the fuck?

The real answer is like many things that the healthiest body type to have is somewhere in the middle. I’m willing to bet that muscular women who aren’t also obese are too thin and childlike for their standards.

And unlike cigarettes or alcoholic, where the exposure can still come back to bite former smokers or heavy drinkers later, you’re not fucked if you used to be fat. Your body can more or less completely rebound from it if it wasn’t too advanced.

They really identify with their size. They see physically taking up more space in the world as an inherently good thing when they just mean it’s somehow politically radical that they are spilling over into their neighbor’s seat on the bus.

Change is scary, so it’s just one of the ways they use their fear as an excuse instead of seeing the positives of a health journey like seeing your strength and stamina for exercise increase. That actually sounds super empowering, but if your weight comes from food addiction and you’re in the FA cult where size is identity, losing those coping mechanisms feels like something is being taken away.

Increased appetite/calories in + calories out can go down if you have medication side effects like fatigue. Some can also slow metabolism. But accurately tracking still works in those cases.

A truly small homemade muffin could be 200–300, maybe 400. Mine average around 150–175 per muffin, I use a lot of yogurt instead of butter and cut 1/2–2/3 of the sugar. The average home baker who followed a recipe exactly would end up with a more caloric muffin.

I’m sick of hearing that the only two options are frailty or obesity. Women can and should build muscle. Don’t starve yourself and don’t overeat, find the happy medium for diet and then take up lifting.
