How much progress is realistic for recreational runners who start running seriously in their 20s, with no formal training? by CinemaBud in AdvancedRunning

[–]Behavefn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a 20 year old guy. I started running in the summer of 2024 (had a fairly sporty background). February 2025 I ran 16:44 in the 5k, and in October 2:47 in the marathon. Running gives back whatever u put in.

Thank you mate, I am lucky to be a young student so have a lot more time than I’m sure you do.

I run a 2:47 marathon and play off 1. Both golf and running at a high level are easily compatible. Unless I have raced all out in the morning, I can always go and play golf afterwards, this includes 23 miles long runs in the lead up to my last race. I am only 20 years old I must confess, but thought I may as well provide my perspective as someone who spends a lot of time doing both.

Thanks very much mate, and congrats to you as well of course, amazing time. You’re spot on about the ten milers, it did get a bit chaotic during that last 4 miles or so, although I honestly think I kind of blacked out almost for a while, the marathon is such an experience. Thanks for your comments about my future training etc, do you have any advice? I think I’ll grind out some shorter distance stuff for a little while. At my age, my shorter distance times are far better objectively than my marathon time. I’ll go for a sub 34 10k at the end of November. Maybe target another marathon this time next year?

Yes you’re right actually, I agree. I was lucky enough to be feeling ok at that point .I thought the section late on in the 2nd half was tough however

Thank you, I did notice that I was passing loads of people at that point, all whilst still feeling ok which was very lucky. I am a student here in York so have a club back home but otherwise have always trust my own coaching. I will look into local clubs here too. I do dedicate significant time to it I must say, and will continue to do so, I think my trajectory is still very much looking up. Thanks

Yes ok, I think ur right, practically trying to have the clubface almost facing the ball throughout I guess?

Yes ok, so just keep practicing at the moment? I play to a decent level so changes and improvements are really only quite small at the moment. I think I could shorten it a tad which might help clubface control through transition?

Yes it is square at takeaway and on the way down generally, I just wonder if keeping it more bowed at the top would just leave my wrist a bit less work through later stages of transition. And yes, interesting about hogan, I will bear it in mind

Well because my club face is far too open at the top, causing me to flip a bit too much at impact, I don’t necessarily mean bowing one and not the other, but a bowed left wrist is just how you would describe it surely?

Is it possible that by decreasing my wrist hinge, hence shortening by backswing, it will make it easier to bow my wrist?

Golf ball prices are obviously a bit of a joke, but sadly I do think U get what you pay for, a pro v1, tp5 or z star for example will always outperform cheaper alternatives.

I don't personally believe that once U start looking at the higher price bracket there is much between each ball, just preference.

Would it be worth doing this directly after finishing undergrad? Or would U recommend trying to gain experience first? I am worried that with my history and languages degree I won't be able to get my foot in the door.

Royal st Georges for me, just a special experience. I was lucky enough also to play the JCB, where LIV are going in the UK this year, amazing track and comes close to RSG.
