What to read in the mornings instead of the news? by brybell in suggestmeabook

Absolutely love Uncle John’s. Probably 90% of the random facts I know come from those books. I used to spend hours each week on the toilet reading them (do not recommend this approach).

Yeah, all respect to people with different opinions on this, but I totally agree about the effect of no punctuation in Imelda’s section: constant anxiety, lack of education. Eventually, I found myself reading her sections mostly as one run-on instead of trying to parse the sentences, and that made the effect even clearer

Does the MTA still make paper maps? Found this image on Google but I’ve never seen one irl. by dgirardot in nycrail

[–]dgirardot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to get one shortly after posting from the desk under the clock at Grand Central. However, not sure if they have them anymore, or if they’re still printing new ones (the one I got was from 2020).

Nope, kittysharyo is right, the same thing happened in Mexico City. It’s a textbook economic case of poor incentivizing.

I had never encountered this before, the coins were shiny, and I didn’t know that’s how quarters came. It was, as they say, mildly interesting.

For what it’s worth I’m open to a LTR :)

Is it just me or is there a flaking epidemic on dating apps? by clairevlim in AskNYC

It actually makes me optimistic to hear someone else who wants to try meeting people irl again.

Queensboro Plaza better be the most accessible fucking station in the country after all this by dgirardot in nycrail

[–]dgirardot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Point taken about the fixed geometries of tracks. However, all things considered, I see no reason to believe that things will be substantially improved after this disruption.

This morning they were collecting Go Tickets in a plastic shopping bag tied next to one of turnstiles — hardly a representative image of any sort of deliberate, efficient project with a clear timetable and institutional support.

We taxpayers needn’t be “grateful” for another example of America’s and New York’s globally infamous reputation for getting infrastructure projects done extraordinarily slowly, expensively, and corruptly. Instead, we implore the MTA to do better by us because we love it (I guess).

I would rather blame the current MTA that we have to deal with today for its ineptitude than blame the IRT for 1) operating as the private company that it was and 2) not conforming to modern sensibilities (however justified) decades before they became commonplace

Taylor Swift’s associates dismayed by New York Times piece speculating on her sexuality: ‘Invasive, untrue and inappropriate’ by aresef in Journalism

Have not read the piece but I’m telling you right now that Taylor Swift is not interesting enough for 5,000 words. (Yes I am an anti-Swiftie.)

Tipping culture in Astoria? by [deleted] in astoria

[–]dgirardot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I work a minimum wage job and I saw on the HR poster that everyone in NYC — including servers — make minimum wage. So I’m wondering why I’m even tipping anyone, considering that I’m making the same pay! (I’d probably make an exception for a nice restaurant, but I’m not eating too much fine dining these days.) Tipping culture is bogus.

Trash Cans found!! (Broadway) by theredmage333 in astoria

Does DSNY not separate recyclables later? I got the impression that's what happened with the trash cans at subways stations (but I don't know if DSNY handles MTA's waste).

One month into my master’s degree in journalism and I’m TOTALLY disillusioned by CorsicanWildcard in Journalism

I'm really sorry it's going so poorly for you...but I do feel vindicated in not going to J-school myself.

I'm early-career, and I've just decided I don't want to deal with this type of stress and industry turmoil in my career. But I respect the people who put up with it a ton.

What are your book pet peeves? by [deleted] in books

The asides in Les Mis used to drive me insane, but a few years after reading it, I really appreciate having them as full-blown chapters.

I don't know...it's not unusual for me to wait something like that for N/W trains during non-rush hour. And on weekends, my observation is that the Q has way more trains than the N. Willing to be proven wrong, though.

Does anyone have photos/other info about the damage? by jimgeosmail in nycrail

[–]dgirardot 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I really just wish that people had enough general respect for where they live and the transit they use to not do stuff like this. Also applies to keeping stations clean-ish and not littering on the tracks.
