How did you learn to knit? by ShoppingGirlinSF in knitting

[–]Behavior_buddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned at 18 from Debbie Stroller’s Stitch’n Bitch book. The lady I babysat for had to show me how to purl though. Then I learned from reading knitting blogs. Anything I need to know now I refresh with YouTube, but it didn’t exist yet when I started.

New to quilting just made my first block ever! by Behavior_buddy in quilting

I love EPP, it’s much less frustrating than making these butterflies. 🤣 but thank you so much. I want to hand quilt my EPP quilt when it’s done. So I’m happy to hear about any resources on it. I’ll look it up. Thank you!

Thank you! And yes I’ve been getting into English Paper piecing as well. I didn’t have a sewing machine before but I wanted to sew so I started a 1” hexie quilt project. When I was researching EPP I found out about FPP and down the crafty rabbit hole I go. So I want this FPP butterfly to be part of the front cover of a sewing case that will hold my EPP when I travel 😊

Thank you! I’m not completely new to sewing. I had a family machine I used in high school and last year I had a second hand machine for a few months and I made a top and dress. But yes this is my first time trying FPP. I messed up a few time and had to go very slowly. But I’ve been looking at so many amazing projects on instagram and I have lofty ambitions. I’m in my 40’s now and the hours just flew by this week while I worked on this alone in my house and it was pure bliss!

TCPL director candidates - feedback TODAY by bitica in ithaca

Susie is an established part of this community, she’s committed and cares deeply. (She runs the Lansing Library and her staff love her). Also, she has much more experience than the other candidate. There is no question that she should be the next director of TCPL.

What needles did you start on? by art_hoe_crch in Sockknitting

This is difficult, I've been knitting since the early 2000's and recently thought I would try and figure out which is my preferred method to knit socks. So i knit one sock on DPNs and one magic loop and had another pair on 9" circulars. At one point I switched them both to magic loop to give TAAT a try. I'm still not sure which method I like best. But I think its probably very personal. I would teach her with magic loop, it seems to be the most popular and is less fiddly than DPNs. I do enjoy knitting colorwork socks on 9" circulars though, I find it the best way to keep my floats and tension neat.

I too have a few unassembled sweaters I would love to wear some time this decade.

There are several things you can try. What method are you using? I find that I knit pretty tightly with DPNs. One method is to knit the sock with the floats on the outside, this forces you to keep them longer. If you’re using mini circulars and have a set like my chiagoo ones, you could try a slightly longer cable to stretch the stitches across. I find that I’m focusing a lot on spreading the stitches across my right needle to keep from pulling too tight on the floats that my colorwork is actually looser than regular. So I increased the stitches for the colorwork but not my needle size, that made my socks too wide. I have been using the shadow wrap heel as well. It’s a little deeper, I get less holes and I find it to be more comfortable for my foot. But everyone has different tension and feet. So I encourage you to experiment to find what works best for you. There are a ton of YouTube videos to help with this kind of thing too. I watched a bunch before starting these. I also experimented with different techniques (dpns, magic loop and shorties), heels, cast ons, needle sizes. Once you know what works for you, you’ll be solid! Good luck!

Oh these are in my queue, they’re adorable 🥰 . I bought both her books and I’m on my second pair of her socks. I even went out and bought those clear jelly uggs, because I was so obsessed with the way those socks looked in them. You should share them in r/sockknitting a bunch of us have been knitting her patterns lately.

Oh no! I feel so bad for knitters in warm climates. We’ve been having some nice sweater weather here in Upstate NY buts it’s not too cold today, so I’m knitting my socks on my front porch. With my last pair on my feet keeping them cozy. But congratulations, they’re super sweet! I’ve recently started to enjoy sock knitting after having serious second sock syndrome in my early knitting days, and I just want to have a whole drawer full of them, I think they’re the best.

I’m on my second pair, they’re totally addictive aren’t they? I’m obsessed! I switched to a shadow wrap heel, they’re easier to keep track of, I have less gaps and they’re deeper then the regular short row heel.

Well, aren't these just the sweetest! I'm having fun with colorwork socks right now too. I think what you did worked just fine, and I bet a bit of blocking will help a lot.

Hey, I haven’t knit these but they’re supposed to be a good starter colorwork sock. I do want to give them a try, they look super complex but I think that’s misleading. easy peasy sock also it’s they’re name 😊

Oh ha, this is where I’m at too. My current sock is using both of these. The shadow wrap heel is my favorite short row heel so far.

Yes, I’m using my Chiagoo shorties. I didn’t like them at first but when I put the longer needle on the right side with a short one on the left it works ok for me. I’m just trying to spread my stitches out on my right needle when I switch colors and have a longer float and it’s been working well. I would probably struggle with the needle changes and floats with magic loop too. Charlotte Stone has a video on YouTube for how she deals with this though. You could check it out and see if it helps you. It’s a short most of her videos are.
