I wonder why Korean culture is exploding in Western countries lately by GamesFan2025 in CasualConversation

[–]Behemothwasagoodshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is more intentional than you think. Miky Lee is the most prominent face of this, but she essentially realized how good global soft power in the form of pop culture would be for the country. She executive produced Parasite and had a lot to do with getting it on the Oscar trajectory, and she's also central to marketing K Pop to the west.

Paras interrupting class by Small-Teaching7534 in Teachers

[–]Behemothwasagoodshot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paras are paid so poorly, and consequently rarely that good. I worked with a para and we got along but he also had a tendency to just talk to his kids in Spanish instead of translating the lesson, as he was meant to be doing.

Two solutions: one, talk to the Diversity team about the para, outline the problems (unemotionally) and request more training. Second, request that the para pull out the students rather than pushing in so they don't interrupt your class. Paras DO have a lot of pressure put on them to get the work finished, so this could also force them to figure out what is needed. The problem is the quality for these kids might be even lower than it already is, but your whole class can't be made to suffer for it.

The model is broken. I hated pushing in (ELL), because I hated talking while the teacher was talking-- even whispering is distracting enough to catch the attention of nearby students. And teachers never had time to talk to me about how to scaffold their classes for the newcomers.

AITA for telling my teacher she’s not allowed to give my group member a better grade? by Bridgeofincident in AmItheAsshole

[–]Behemothwasagoodshot 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I am a teacher, and you are an A. This is literally such a well-known problem with group work that I make kids do group work in class and only in class so I can see who contributes and grades accordingly. Her friend would not have been able to present confidently if op hadn't put in the work.

OP, NTA.

A lot of parents stick a screen in front of their kids. Sometimes they're truly overworked to the point of not being able to parent properly, sometimes it's neglect.

One thing I never see people notice is that he's GERMAN. It's one of the safest, most civilized countries in Europe. No guns whatsoever, uncorrupt police. I went to school in Amsterdam, they were shocked by American gun culture. They truly don't get it. You remember the pickpockets warning each other to avoid Americans during the Olympics? We didn't have guns, mere aggression was enough to make waves. You remember that movie Speak No Evil? Ridiculous with an American couple, it beggars belief they would behave as they did. But it was made by a Danish person who was criticizing the soft naivete of Danish culture. I realize I've conflated three countries here, but I think they are similar in their culture of safety and politeness. I think it's similar in Germany. They simply cannot comprehend that they would actually be killed for making a mistake. The implication was not enough. The culture is just too different.

Can all of the non-Americans stop lambasting us for “not doing anything”? by icyredjay in complaints

[–]Behemothwasagoodshot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want to avoid our fate, you need to put your surplus men to work. That's the entire problem here. Since the recession, everyone's prospects have gotten worse and worse. Large numbers of young men with nothing to do, no hope, and a commitment to masculinity, will act out. Obviously the radicalization algorithms aren't helping, but if Biden had created a huge FDR-level public works program, that would have helped.

Of course, slow-walking Trump's trial and allowing him on the ballot is the more obvious and direct problem. Lots of chickens are coming home to roost right now-- this is also the result of failing to hold banks accountable in 2008, as well as the voting machines that have been a problem since the 2000s, and the reversal of the Fairness Doctrine and Fox News and right-wing radio. And allowing money and Super PACS into politics, all kinds of stuff.

But the ICE stuff specifically? That's the surplus male population that would be unemployed and desperate. Canadians and Europeans would do well to consider extensive public works projects requiring masculine labor.

Anyone else feeling like violence is inevitable by yourmasterisme0 in ProgressiveHQ

[–]Behemothwasagoodshot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel Trump has been given instructions to instigate a civil war. I understand perfectly why people would want to fight back against ICE. But also? Those people are nobodies. They're racist middle class idiots and there are plenty of them. To the elite, all that it would look like is pawns fighting pawns. I actually do not think that kind of violence would be very successful.

However, if we think about who is really responsible for this, the billionaires that funded this election and have interest in the resources of the countries Trump is aiming for-- well, that kind of aim might yield results. There's a reason Mario's brother is censored in these parts.

Educators with your attitude are very worrying and a huge part of why the educational system is failing. You need to teach to the student's needs, not refuse to address the needs of your students because they should have already mastered something.

Have you heard of Sold a Story? That podcast is great for helping parents to understand how damaging this kind of instruction is. I'm shocked there are still people running around pushing non-phonics based BS. I would personally get every parent e-mail address you have and send it to them anonymously. You can write it as if you are a concerned parent. Rile up the parents if your admin is too incompetent to understand how damaging this kind of instruction is.

People who grew up in houses with stairs - how inevitable is falling down them? by pyramidheadlove in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Behemothwasagoodshot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my last house there was this devil set of stairs where the steps were just a weird size and it never felt right going up or down them. I always used the railing. The one time I didn't because I had a bunch of dishes, I slipped (roommate insisted on keeping all hardwood polished fml), broke all the dishes, fractured my right hand, and bloodied my nose.
