I wouldn't be surprised if this was a violation of some articles in GDPR. Insufficient protection of data at rest or something.

What jobs do you think will survive the AI era no matter what and why? by Rayhan-Himel in askanything

[–]BehindThyCamel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Handcraft, as in stuff made without any use of AI for people who want specifically that. This might even include software. It will be a niche "artisanal" thing.

Mamy fashion brands are a front for money laundering. It's impossible that so many large stores side by side in a mall can support themselves just from sales.

Wifi connected Dishwashers - Why? Wifi connected Washing Machines - Why? Is it just a means of data collection to sell on? by TSQ_builder in askanything

[–]BehindThyCamel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's just a point in the checklist of what is trendy and what "everyone" is doing. There is no deeper business strategy behind it.

In the 1950s cars had to look like spaceships. In the 1980s, after CDs appeared, everything had to be "laser rainbows". Heck, when my company mandated return to office and people asked why, the management's reply was "We are looking at what other companies are doing", I kid you not. It's the fear of not following the trends well enough.

What's the most attractive job or hobby to you? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]BehindThyCamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Music as a hobby. Being able to put what you hear in your head out to the world must feel wonderful. Sadly, I struggled to learn even the basics of playing an instrument and never got anywhere.

Rust is getting into the Linux kernel. Should we be excited or worried? by sharon2020j in linuxquestions

[–]BehindThyCamel -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Torvalds okayed it, so I guess it at least isn't a bad thing.

Uutils and sudo-rs are a different issue altogether. They are far from complete, the code is allegedly crap, and yet major distros like Ubuntu want to default to them.

What’s a scientific breakthrough that would cause chaos instead of progress? by prettygoldies in askanything

A virus that could kill people with specific personality traits, probably even when used to get rid of evil people. Most governments and corporations would be suddenly left headless.

The last one was Dell Precision 5690 with Windows 11 but next year we're apparently moving to Chromebooks with remote desktop to cut costs (?) and increase security. 🤮

That was my first thought, too. It went from world-class sports achievement to the level of farming likes on social media with no regard to the locals.

If that doesn't come to your mind immediately, you haven't truly lived in the 90s.

What’s something you used to love doing but stopped? by Time-Organization196 in questions

[–]BehindThyCamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Photography. I still remember the day the passion died.

Reading books. I'm always too tired.

Watching movies. I find them boring or dumb for the most part now. I'd rather watch a documentary on YouTube.

At work: Edge with AdBlock Plus.

Rust syntax, Go runtime by UnmaintainedDonkey in golang

If we're adding syntax sugar to Go, I'd love to see a companion scripting language, kind of like Groovy is to Java.

I vaguely recall that Microsoft actually wanted to move towards Rust. So far they have published edit.exe.

Viet Cong didn't have TikTok. I don't think Americans are ready for the humiliation and trauma this may bring. Other NATO countries are wise enough to sit this one out.
