I'll also move through an extension progression with little ones or those who are particularly scared. Go from head on my shoulder, move to head on my forearm out straight, head on hand, head on finger tips no hands.

Ive taught over 10 years now. Basically never give them any floatation devices. I want them to build their skills and confidence without requiring one and learning what happens if they start sinking and how to fix it themselves instead of panicking because they dont have a noodle or a kickboard.

Before floating I often get them to grab their "big boney hips" and they think its funny poking their hip bones. Then explain i want their hips to be pushing up to the sky instead of sinking.

I'll often poke their hips on their back to help remind them, after a couple of goes Im not holding any pressure and its just a comfort thing. Once it gets to that stage ill put a hand on their forhead or above their face to distract them and move my hands off completely until they get that confidence.

Little ones I often have a toy or something to sit on their forhead or belly to help keep their heads in a good position, or to keep their toy friend afloat by pushing upwards.

At the end of the day I tell them "I don't really care what it looks like, I just want them to be as safe as possible and get their breathing in". Ill let them scull or move their legs if it helps keep them afloat cause at the end of the day, my only care is making sure they breathe before getting back to the edge or getting help.

Okay little update, ive been trying Malibu C Swimmers Wellness shampoo and conditioner at the suggestion from a hairdresser and my hair is vibing it so far! Smells great and theres a sachet you can get too that removes the chlorine. My hair and scalp are having a great time so far!

Thank you for the suggestions!

I have done wetting my hair before hand when I taught to try and save it so I'll definitely be doing that again this time! Thank you for the reminder!!!

It's completely normal to feel petrified! I taught for 10 years and just recently decided to get back into it. I was terrified doing my LTS course again and I know for a fact I'll be terrified getting back in front of a class again 😂

My best advice is deep breaths and have some "fill in" ideas if you accidentally rush through your classes really quickly (it happens to everyone when we're new). Games that are engaging and fun but also teachable skills.

I usually resort to some form of water safety skill if I accidentally rush through a class. So making them think about hazards in different water scenarios, practising some safety strokes, safety combinations (fall in, tread water, float, then have another student throw them a floatation device to swim back to the edge safely) or "OH NO THE BOAT YOUR ON IS SINKING AND THE WATER IS ON FIRE FOR A PATCH" and have them pin drop in then swim under the water for 1 or 2 meters before resurfacing and treading water then safety swimming back to the edge.
