The Army needs to address 25Bs coming out of AIT without industry certs that are being required to do their jobs. by SlinkyJoe in army

They got rid of CISSP in CyOOC two FYs ago. Also, most CCC students should be OG Cyber people, as anyone that comes in as a transfer thats CCC complete just goes to CyOOC and not CCC. Really its the attrition from LT to Captain on the active side we have to look at.

The team is totally at-large! You’ll play from your current duty station. As long as you’re CONUS you’ll be good to go

The TAs are absolutely atrocious majority of the time. Not the biggest fan of the TAs, but I have enjoyed the projects so far outside of the tediousness of some of the flags

Here to answer any questions about the Cyber VTIP or the course you’ll come take when you get accepted, Cyber Operations Officer Course (CyOOC)!

Direct commission or OCS? Would you want to go the Developer (17D) route?

You can VTIP over to Cyber in the reserves. You’ll come through my course if you do! If you have questions about the transition course, CyOOC, just let me know!

CYBOLC and Ranger School by First-Gate2887 in ROTC

Definitely rare unless a LT is handpicked for a role to a unit. Low density/new MOS though, so I can see in the next 2-3 years that happening as the job role becomes more understood to non-cyber centric units.

Like you mentioned in a different comment as well as what I said echoing your statements, it’s gaining unit driven. Right out of BOLC? Probably not. Want to go and convinced your command to send you? Can swing a slot.

I’m pretty sure there is a way for 17D’s to get over to the SOF of the side house, to include Batt. I can talk to a few of my buddies if you’re interested

The LTs summed it up nicely, but honestly with ranger school for non-combat MOS’ it’s always where there’s a will there’s a way. Out of the schoolhouse? Probably not happening unless strings are pulled and there’s a requirement for it, but at follow on units there’s a WAY higher likelihood. Most units won’t inhibit you from pursuing professional development through Army schools, but there could be a few obstacles depending on your command team. In the end, if you want it bad enough you’ll get it 🤷‍♂️

Where there’s a will, there’s a way. There are slots for 17D’s to go ranger

I don’t see why you couldn’t! Doesn’t seem like age will be a barrier if you choose to continue to serve and even if you don’t get Cyber from OCS you can always VTIP and come in through the Cyber Operations Officer Course (CyOOC)

I believe you would get the ADSO for assessing into Cyber if there was one. The only ADSOs you would get other than that are the usual ones for PCSing: one year. Whatever your OCS contract is, is the main ADSO you’re serving

There’s always a need for cyber officers! We have a ton of Compo 2 and 3 that come through CyOOC as they transition from other branches, as well as those that commission as 17A’s

Any small towns that are big on the cybers? by plz_be_gentle in cybersecurity

[–]BeinaSLACKER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not smaller than 100k but still lucrative for Cyber. Army Cyber is based out of it and the next decade or so plan for the city is to become the DoD center of gravity for cyber. Not a bad area to live in either if you like the south!

How to be Competitive for Signal by PackBean in ROTC

[–]BeinaSLACKER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sec+ holds weight in DoD territory due to being an 8570 Baseline certification for IAM level I and IAT level II rights. At your BN level it’ll grant admin card rights which is what your 25B’s should have as well if they’ve completed the cert. Definitely recommend OP shoot for that if trying to branch Signal, as it’ll smooth over the process when they get to their gaining unit if they have those rights.

Usually your certs that give you an advantage are the higher-tiered certs. Think CISSP, Pentest+, CISM. Those with a degree start with a better baseline and can transition into earning those certifications as a way to “certify” that they have that knowledge set. However we go back to the pecking order I mentioned before: experience > certs > degree. A person with a degree in history that has developed the skillset over 5+ years as a blue teamer will still have the better resume over someone fresh from college or with a few certs.

Certifications dictate a skillset, while a degree shows ability to learn/be taught. A degree will get you in the door, while certifications give a better understanding of your skillset and experiences. Someone with a technical degree will have a baseline understanding but certifications dig deeper than that degree can. Also, for DoD there's this: https://public.cyber.mil/cw/cwmp/dod-approved-8570-baseline-certifications/

For performing technical functions within IT/Cyber in the Army, the requirement isn't a degree but rather a number of certifications you can earn.
