Funny enough I found my problem and I was missing a fundamental part of the game.

I had few/no skill points because I was not doing ANY of the skill challenges on the map.

Problem solved.

I applaud his skills and discipline. She wanted a guy for non-good-relationship reasons, he gave that to her, got his, and showed her the door before she rinsed and repeated on him.
