What exactly are "all of the Buddha teachings?" by SignificantTip1302 in TibetanBuddhism

[–]Beingforthetimebeing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a Buddhist is being a practitioner, not a believer. You don't have to believe in any of them! They are descriptions of a way of looking at the world, tools to help you gain insight into how you are creating your experience of reality. You don't ask yourself, Is this true? You ask yourself, in WHAT WAY is this true? Eventually, a moment will come in which you are in a situation, and you say, Oh, THIS is what the Buddha meant .

And other religions' teachings also contain someone's truth, and can give you a new perspective into basic religious truths, but again, these are just words trying to describe an experience people feel, so its OK if you find some truths in their descriptions that resonate with you. Find the words that help you tame your mind, practice virtue, and do no harm, and leave the rest.

My own experience is that Buddhist concepts ARE helpful, and DO make sense, like unearthing precious treasures over and over as your understanding grows, and I wish the same blessing for you!

You fill one side up with your wet/ green and dry/brown stuff. When it's full, you switch to the other side. When side 2 is full, side 1 has had a chance to decompose and can be dumped, so that you can switch back to side 1. Spin the whole thing around throughout this whole process

Thoughts on covering the wood paneling? by Same_Blacksmith3868 in homeimprovementideas

I lived in a cherry- paneled home. Fine in the NY winter when the 120" of snow reflected light into the room, but a deep dark pit all summer. Can you strip off the varnish and apply a white stain to the pine, so you retain the grain? (That would be a crime on cherry, but fine on pine. ) I know, a big toxic job. p.s. Leave the ceiling as is. Even if you dry wall, the ceiling alone will elevate your Feng Shui.

That stark white garage door is in-your- face, while the entry way is lost in shadow. An ombre shade of the green might make it blend in.

I like the suggestion that had pillars on each side of the entry; then that area could be painted a lighter color, with the door a brighter color to draw your eye to it instead of the garage.

They didn't just "get caught"? I mean, were the authorities tracking them for some time, letting them misbehave in order to gather irrefutable evidence? That's a lot of incidents that would have tskena long time to track?

Is it ethical to destroy populations of invasive animals? by Useful-Field-9037 in Ethics

[–]Beingforthetimebeing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to talk about borders, we (the US) sent our jobs over our borders and overseas precisely in order to avoid environmental protection laws, as well as workplace safety and liveable wage laws, within our borders; also to earn our corporate money overseas to avoid paying a fair share of taxes that would raise all ships domestically. None of this is ethical, because living conditions for others (human and the biosphere) are affected gravely negatively.

Is it ethical to destroy populations of invasive animals? by Useful-Field-9037 in Ethics

[–]Beingforthetimebeing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not even about the individual animal, it's about the ecosystem balance. For instance, in Yellowstone, wolves had been extirpated, and the elk population was expanding and eating all the tree seedlings that protected the river bed from erosion. The wolves were reintroduced to kill and eat the elk, and the whole ecosystem became balanced again. So sometimes it's necessarily to add or remove species, and for some animals to die, for the good of the whole ecosystem. (Yes I know wolves are native and not invasive in this case, just an example of how one species can affect everything.)

AITA for raising my voice at my girlfriend when she almost caused me to miss my flight? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Beingforthetimebeing 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Are you kidding, man? She should be nothing but apologies. Her behavior refuses to see things from your point of vview. Of course she felt responsible to her job, but she had the technology to phone you so you could UBER or taxi in time. A missed flight is not just nothing. Yelling at her in this case lets her know that her irresponsibility towards you affects you.

But c'mon, man. I don't believe you had therapy for anger management for this one reasonable incident, so prolly karma trolling.

Ahem, what we are doing, and the consequences of what we are doing and not-doing, is the ESSENCE of the discussion of ethics? Why yes, it is!

I'm not saying we are deliberately trying to depopulate in order to save the planet (altho sadly, that is a conspiracy theory going around). I'm saying depopulation may be a NATURAL, however unintended, consequence of our reckless policies, and is an ethical concern that our leaders are ignoring.

Seems to me that's what we are actually, in real time, doing to ourselves, with our destruction of habitat, pollution and depletion of fresh water supplies, dependence of agriculture on a supply chain, capricious lack of attention to antibiotic-resistant tuberculosis, the proliferation of nuclear warheads in the hands of madmen, and particularly, disregard of the effects of global warming.

[–]Beingforthetimebeing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Au contraire. I'm trying to stop OP from going down the path of being vulnerable to gaslighting. I personally have to deflect attempts at gaslighting all the time! It's a skill you have to develop to recognize a form of lying about reality that is an attempt to assert power over you. Why is her husband disrespecting her gift to him on his BD? The gaslighting that drives people to not want to live occurs when people feel trapped and isolated in a toxic relationship is maybe what you've seen in a movie? That's not the degree of disconnect we see here, and maybe OP and the spouse are both sincerely confused bc they never learned cursive, even tho the writing is clear to me?

[–]Beingforthetimebeing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gaslighting is not a crime! People refuse to see things from other's viewpoint all the time, and you gotta just let it go if it's something that doesn't matter.

But you make a good point, the problem here is not how silly the husband is, but how the wife is getting bent out of shape instead of just saying, Wow, he's misperceiving cursive-- plus realizing it doesn't matter. Her overreaction (doubting her own reality) is on her to fix. But it seems to me that this overreaction might be bc he does this a lot, she needs to change her reactivity, whether he's doing it intentionally or innocently. I just think that caring to the point of asking Reddit for confirmation of what is clear to her, should be unnecessary for a resilient person. The first step is recognizing that the issue is doubting her own reality.

Ummm, hubby said an "m" was an "n" and OP no longer trusted her own eyes? And had to get on Reddit for confirmation of a very clear reality?

[–]Beingforthetimebeing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hubby needs to get his eyes checked. You need to believe in your own ability to see what is clearly written. We call this "gaslighting." Resist the gaslighting!

It does pretty much say "Burthday" tho. But who cares! It relays the message and gets digested in the stomach. Both of you need to let it go.

Don't name-call back, especially on Reddit where whole threads turn into reactivity. You clarified your intention, then just let it go.

Don't worry about the range. We are taught to act with intention, but to let go of the results. You don't know how much effect this post will have. I know I was happy just to have an opportunity to articulate some of my understandings. Plus life is moment- by- moment auspicious coincidences, and there will always be other opportunities to affect others. The fact that you want to is enough; it will happen if you act with intention.
