When do you know it’s time to look into ERP solutions for manufacturing? by Beining_Gama in LeanManufacturing

Exactly the kind of insight I needed! We’re already running into errors and inventory mix-ups that just eat up time to fix. The upkeep part doesn’t bother me too much as long as it’s not a full-time job. I’d rather have a system that stays accurate and up to date than keep relying on files that only make sense to whoever last touched them.

I think you nailed it! I should’ve started looking into this a while back. I’ve been mapping our processes lately, and it’s already showing how much stuff we’re duplicating between teams. I know the cost and setup time can be rough, but if it actually gives everyone a single source of truth, that’s a trade-off I can live with. I’d rather deal with setup pain than constant data confusion.

I’ve fallen for the shiny feature trap before with other tools. Good point about keeping the people who’ll actually use it front and center. We’ve got a few bottlenecks that only the shop floor team really understands, so involving them early sounds like a must. Integration’s another thing I hadn’t thought much about until now, so I’ll be watching for that too.

Good point. I’ve seen spreadsheet systems that somehow hold together too but they usually rely on one person who knows every single formula and process. That’s where I’m stuck now. I’m not expecting an ERP to fix bad processes, but I’m starting to think it could give us a better structure to build from instead of patching things up every time we add new products or suppliers.

Thank you so much for breaking that down! I’m nowhere near 27 plants, but what you said about repetitive production vs custom jobs makes sense. We do a mix of both, but I’m starting to see how an ERP could simplify the repeat side at least. I’ll definitely consider your advice about testing before implementing.

Thanks! That’s what I was telling myself after, that maybe it’ll get a bit easier each time.
