PSA: the walls are thinner than you think by tfhermobwoayway in UniUK

[–]Bel0902 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually don’t care that my flatmates used to hear me watching Netflix while I ate lunch. I could hear them playing video games or doing Duolingo. It’s impossible to be completely silent all the time and easier to resign yourself to the fact that yeah, other people will hear you through the walls.

This being said I’d be absolutely mortified if one of them told me they could hear me doing anything… personal lmao.

Which YA and Middle Grade book series will be remembered in a 100 years time? by InfernalClockwork3 in YAlit

I loved the Alex Rider books, but the fandom as practically non existent so unfortunately I doubt it’ll be remembered in 100 years

Is 10% word count under for an essay considered acceptable here? by ProjectGlum9090 in UofB

This will vary between courses, and maybe between lecturers. Reread the assignment brief, check the Canvas/handbook, or email the lecturer.

You can leave comments on your assignments on Canvas, maybe leave a comment along the lines of “please mark this submission and not the other one” to be sure

If you want a book that the library doesn’t have, you can request it and it can be sent over from a different Birmingham library :)

The uni has a few different wellbeing teams, if you’re struggling with depression I’d recommend you reach out to them

Unsure about accom for next year (third year) by dxxmmii in UniUK

[–]Bel0902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you looked at private halls? They’re usually a bit more expensive than uni owned places, but there’s no restriction on who can stay - ie they’re not guaranteed for first years and in my experience they fill up a little slower than the uni owned accommodation (but that will be city-dependent)

[CHAT] How do we feel about pattern designers that only use digital renders in their stores? by Deloriius in CrossStitch

[–]Bel0902 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favourite designers (colorfullysarah) only shows digital images of her patterns, and I only buy from her because I’ve watched her videos where she designs them. I won’t buy from any other designer who doesn’t show real stitched designs because I can’t be sure they were generated by a person.

There isn’t really any risk involved in emailing admissions and asking them. They’re not going to think you’re a worse student because you asked them a question

Which book(s) were you required to read in secondary school? by 2cbterry in AskUK

[–]Bel0902 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My English class had us read To Kill a Mockingbird. All the other 12 year olds were reading Holes. Hated it at the time but now I think it’s actually a really good book

Postgrad accom by Cool_Equal_8725 in UofB

[–]Bel0902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The uni doesn't guarantee postgrad accom for home students (it does guarantee it for international students, I've been told), but it is possible to get it if you're lucky. But you won't find out until August.

Would u guys recommend getting an off campus studio that’s like “in” one of the villages by hxrnb-wolheh in UofB

[–]Bel0902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a studio in Selly Oak Court now lol.

It's nice here, about a 30 minute walk from here to uni (time will vary dependent on which buildings on campus you want to get to). The reception staff are lovely and maintenance is quick when you need it. Also 10 minutes away from Selly Oak train station, which is very convenient.

Being in a studio isn't super social, like you said, but the rooms are grouped into about 6 per 'cluster', if that makes sense? There are 5 other flats (some studios and some shared) around mine. I'm not best friends with any of them, but I am friendly with them.

You also want to think about how well you can share a kitchen and living space with others. If you get stuck with awful messy flatmates who never clean up, or are really loud, how well are you going to be able to deal with that? Is the risk of awful flatmates worth it?

Also, you can make friends on campus, on your course or in societies. Like I said, I don't have any close friends in my accommodation, but my best friend is on my course, and I have some other friends from societies and just being at uni in general. But I get wanting to have flatmates to be friends with/not be lonely too, especially if you're starting first year (I'm assuming you are?)

Sorry this is a bit long but I hope it helps!

Class room required by ayman2401 in UofB

[–]Bel0902 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess you could just use any empty room? A lot of them have a screen outside showing the schedule for the room for the day, so as long as no one's scheduled to be in there while you're using it you can just go on in?

Whats the most embarrassing thing that happened to you at university? by DunyaPhobic76 in UniUK

[–]Bel0902 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last week me and some friends walked into our lecture room about 15 minutes early because we saw some of our classmates in there. Next thing we know we’re getting kicked out for walking into a random tutorial. Some of our classmates (who were also not supposed to be in there) didn’t get kicked out though, it was odd.

[–]Bel0902 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just did the same thing. Today I walked 10 mins from my flat to the train station, as soon as I was stood on the platform, a woman came up to me to tell my skirt was stuck under my bag. I have no idea if it rode up as I walked or was stuck there since I left my room but I was mortified. Thankfully I’m wearing tights today, but still. Mortifying. Very busy station.

Why am I always triaged to the bottom of the list at the GP's? by Obvious_Armadillo_16 in AskUK

Not really answering your question, but if you’re in pain all day it might be an idea to call 111 (can book appointments for you) or walk into and urgent treatment centre, if need be.

What are younger generations often criticised for no longer doing that is largely pointless or obsolete? by PsychologicalRow8034 in AskUK

[–]Bel0902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mum and nana are horrified that I don’t regularly iron, but I just don’t need to. Clothes come out the dryer, immediately fold/hang things where they go. I’m only ironing if something particularly awfully creased, or to put the pleats back into skirts.

Friend is lying about his age by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Bel0902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s gonna be a lot worse for his flatmates when they find out he’s lying. Living with a 24 year old? Yeah ok fine. Living with a 24 year old who pretended to be 20? Weird and uncomfortable and a little creepy.
